Warning: This page contains spoilers for the October 11, 2023, game of Jeopardy! — please do not scroll down if you wish to avoid being spoiled. Please note that the game airs as early as noon Eastern in some U.S. television markets.

Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Fine Art) for Wednesday, October 11, 2023 (Season 40, Game 23):

An early owner of this 1889 painting full of blue & green noted how well the artist “understood the exquisite nature of flowers!”

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:

Karla Fossett, a senior content administrator from Saco, Maine
Karla Fossett on Jeopardy!
Robert Won, a math professor from Washington, D.C.
Robert Won on Jeopardy!
Sam Stapleton, a college consultant from Los Gatos, California
Sam Stapleton on Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

Today sees Quarterfinal #8 of Champions Wildcard; Sam Stapleton, Robert Won, and Karla Fossett return to the Alex Trebek Stage. Of today’s three players, Robert was a very strong player in his initial games who got unlucky in his second game on the show. Certainly, I would not be surprised if he performed strongly in this one! Of course, everyone has had a layoff and things can be much different this time around–anything can happen!

Also, a reminder that Celebrity Jeopardy airs tonight at 8:00 (7:00 Central) on ABC; tonight’s matchup features Christopher Meloni (who has two games’ worth of experience, from 2006 and 2009), Sherri Shepherd, and Katie Nolan.

Vincent Van Gogh's painting "Irises", as asked about during Final Jeopardy! on Wednesday, October 11, 2023.

Vincent Van Gogh’s “Irises”. Courtesy: The J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles

Almost immediately after entering a mental health treatment facility in Saint-Rémy, France in 1889, Vincent Van Gogh began a prolific career period, producing nearly 130 paintings. Inspired by the flowers in the facility’s garden, Irises was one of the first produced. The “understood the exquisite nature of flowers” comment in the clue came from French art critic Octave Mirbeau, who owned the painting from 1892–1905.

As this painting is in the J. Paul Getty Museum collection in Los Angeles, it is quite possible that this Final could result in a “Slumdog Millionaire” moment for a contestant who chose to go to the Getty in L.A. before taping.

Andy’s Thoughts:

  • Viewers are reminded of the following sections of the Site Comment Policy: “The judges have the ability to isolate contestant audio and are always willing to stop tape to confirm.” and “This sort of behavior [complaining that the judges credited an incorrect pronunciation] is akin to those who used to call into the PGA Tour with rules violations. It’s incredibly gauche.”
  • Today’s box score: Octobert 11, 2023 Box Score.

Final Jeopardy! wagering suggestions:

Robert: Bet at least $1,400 to have the best shot at second place. (Actual bet: $0)

Karla: Cover bet over Robert is $1,601. (Actual bet: $7,600)

23 Comments on "Today’s Final Jeopardy – Wednesday, October 11, 2023"

  1. I guessed “What is Claude Monet’s ‘Water lilies’?”—another artist who “understood the exquisite nature of flowers !” Not doing well at all this week—have yet to get even one right.
P.S. Andy, some technical questions: First, why, when I press “cancel reply” to one person, can I then not reply to anyone else? (I’m human, this happens, and I find it very annoying.) Second, if I post something and someone else answers in the same thread, can I reply to that person still in the same thread, and, if so, how? Third, I guess by now I’ve become resigned to this; but why, after all this time and various “fixes”, do I still have to enter all my info every time I post something—even if I press “Save…for the next time…”? I hope you can help me with these problems.

    • the save option doesn’t work for me either

      • I had never tried to use ‘Save’ here (or any other site’s comments), but when I click on the ‘Name’ box I get a little list to choose from & my most frequent use is always first choice, ditto for the ‘Email’ box. [This occurs on some other comment sites, too, but I don’t do them often.] I don’t know if it is a feature of the particular web publishing platform or my using Chrome, but these few clicks do not seem much to ask for (and maybe less apt to accidentally submit prematurely) than prefilled info.

        • Hi Lisa! I don’t get these “little lists”. My choices are either fill in “name” and “e-mail”, or nothing. Maybe it’s because I don’t have Chrome?
P.S. Andy, got the “thread” figured out (although can I add to my own comment, or only to someone else’s?) But still wondering about “cancel reply” and “save info”.

          • I have replied to my own comment in the past, as a correction or extra information. (And I suspected the “listed choices” were a Chrome thing.)

    • I also thought water lilies. Thought for sure I’d nailed it.

    • Hi RedRose, I wrote you a little note for the October 10th daytime Jeopardy! episode if you are inclined to go back & have a look. Sadly, I also said “Water Lilies” for today’s Final! We have 3 of Monet’s water lily paintings here in Chicago from the series of his paintings. They’re big & really beautiful. Drat! Judith P.

  2. Gee whiz, blue and green sure sounded like water and lily pads to me! What was there in the clue to rule that out?

    • The date ruled it out. Water lilies was painted 1919.

      • Exactly. Art + 1889 should immediately bring a player to Van Gogh, anyway.

I’m expecting “Starry Night” to be as likely of an incorrect response for that reason today.

        • Makes sense. There was something about the way the clue read that made me feel like the painting had not actually been of flowers and that such a simple quote had been remembered this long due to the owner’s cluelessness rather than insight. [BTW, speaking of “this long”, I assume you meant to type 1892–1895 instead of 1892–1095.]

    • That was the image that came to my mind for blue + green = flowers, but I did not think that fit otherwise.

  3. I guessed Monet’s water lilies
For those who are novice or simply interested in art, I discovered Great Arts Explained on Youtube 3 years ago. I greatly recommend it.
I may have got this jeopardy final incorrect, but have been doing much better in the Arts category overall. Also I see Art in a different light now.

  4. I remember seeing the lilies in the art museum once but still I went with the water lilies by Monet. The great arts stuff is pretty challenging so i would love to learn more about it later.

  5. Also guessed Water Lilies, which I thought of as an early Monet work. Wasn’t sure when that was but I had thought it much earlier than it actually was. I couldn’t think of a Van Gogh, who was my first thought. Irises was an “Oh yeah, that exists” moment for me.

Glad Robert swung got the fences on that DD. Too bad it didn’t work out for him. Would have made FJ very different!

  6. In Field of Dreams, Doc Graham did NOT get to play; Moonlight Graham got to play!

  7. Michael Johnston | October 11, 2023 at 7:58 pm |

Missed it 😕 I figured it was something of his, but I am not familiar enough with Van Gogh’s oeuvre to name a painting based on a short description like that [Tbh, I do not think even an exhaustive description would have helped me here]. And here I was hoping to get a little win streak going 😅

  8. Edward Carlin | October 11, 2023 at 8:06 pm |

Was it me, or did Ken forget to say what the correct answer on Final Jeopardy? The Van Gogh.

  9. I knew Irisis immediately! Probably because it’s one of my favorite paintings.

  10. Enos Williams | October 12, 2023 at 12:13 am |

I knew this (or was able to make an educated guess) from having seen the Canadian cartoon “The Irises” several times on “O Canada” on Cartoon Network.

  11. Bill Vollmer | October 12, 2023 at 12:40 pm |

Once again the category for a final Jeopardy was not one of my strengths. When the answer was read/ shown, I thought that when the correct response was given, I might know the work. I didn’t.
And, it has to be someone who is very new to Jeopardy, that doesn’t know that the people at the judges’ table, have the capability to review the audio to make sure of an ruling.
