Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:
Over the one and a half seasons of Celebrity Jeopardy, one of the biggest “complaints” (I put complaints in quotation marks because I don’t think it’s particularly valid) is that some of the diehard fans that watch the regular show day in and day out aren’t as familiar with the celebrity players in primetime. And I think tonight’s casting is proof that “not being familiar with these players would be the fault of the viewer’s lack of pop culture knowledge, and not the fault of the show”. Tonight’s players are Becky Lynch (one of the WWE’s most recognizable current superstars), Rachel Dratch (who portrayed one of Saturday Night Live‘s most famous characters ever in Debbie Downer), and Macaulay Culkin (who has been internationally recognized for over 30 years, having starred as Kevin McCallister in the Home Alone films).
How will any of our players tonight play? I have no idea. The primetime Celebrity Jeopardy format lets our players be themselves; there’s extra time for goofing off, and we still get to see our full complement of clues.
One thing I’ve also very much been enjoying is the increased number of “behind-the-scenes” photos over on ABC’s press site. To me, the more photos, the better!

Go, Kevin McCallister!
“out of pocket” has a different modern meaning. It means the same as “out of line” or “unrestrained” in modern vernacular
I’m not sure what your issue is here—”at one’s own expense” is still correct, and it’s still a needlessly wordy way of saying “unavailable”.
It is good to remember that there is a character limit on clues; thus, it is very impractical to put every single possible meaning of a term into a clue.
I agree with you about length limits on clues, but also something can be correct without having to be doubly correct by giving additional information.
IMO “out of pocket” is not just a needlessly wordy substitute for unavailable. I think “unavailable” can have the connotation of “not available TO YOU” but “out of pocket” is more likely to be taken as the truth [which even now in the age of universal cell phones can be true].
Also, I have heard the phrase used to mean “in a bad mood”, though I feel that can have evolved by just a few people from either/both of the other uses. I.e., if a boss is in a bad mood, callers may be told the boss is “out of pocket” (rather than putting the caller through) and/or if someone is in a really bad mood they may be more likely to say something out of line.
Becky didn’t get money credit for baconator answer.
No—because she didn’t ring in, and it came after time was up. Nobody—not even celebrities—can skirt those rules.
The complaints of “some of the diehard fans that watch the regular show day in and day out” because they “aren’t as familiar with the celebrity players in primetime” is so funny. For one thing, Celebrity Jeopardy! is not pre-empting THEIR Jeopardy! shows, so why can’t they just ignore that it exists? For another, do they KNOW who any of the players on their daily syndicated Jeopardy! shows ARE before they watch? (They barely know afterward unless one turns into a multi-day champion.) Apparently some do not even want to know anything about the regular contestants anyway as I have read several say they never pay attention to the interviews or that the interviews are the worst part of the show.
My guess is that a lot of the “who knows these so-called celebrities?” ‘d’itching is because they don’t like that they don’t “get” the banter when they don’t already know anything about them. My answer is either “research them in Wikipedia” before watching or JUST DON’T watch!
