Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Washington, D.C.) for Wednesday, November 15, 2023 (Season 40, Game 48):
It was proposed in Congress in 1926 in honor of a big 150th anniversary; it opened 17 years later
(correct response beneath the contestants)
Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:
Henry Rozycki, a neonatologist & author from Richmond, Virginia
|
Kit Sekelsky, a freelance graphic designer from Kent, Ohio
|
Leah Caglio, a librarian originally from Phoenix, Arizona
|
Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:
As I said in my preview, Jeopardy! paired three of my favorite champions from Seasons 37 & 38—Leah Caglio, Kit Sekelsky, and Henry Rozycki—in the same quarterfinal. At least with the strike having ended, and these episodes taped with the writers back on-set, I am happy to cheer for all three of these players and will be happy regardless of today’s outcome!
Also, tonight (at 8:00/7:00 Central on ABC) sees the return of Celebrity Jeopardy — tonight’s Celeb showdown is between WWE superstar Becky Lynch, Rachel Dratch (best known for her Saturday Night Live character Debbie Downer) and internationally famous actor Macaulay Culkin.

In honor of both the 150th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence and the 100th anniversary of Thomas Jefferson’s passing, the 69th Congress first introduced a resolution to authorize the building of a memorial to Thomas Jefferson, the third President of the United States and principal author of the Declaration of Independence. The memorial was originally planned for the intersection of Constitutionn & Pennsylvania Avenue in D.C., but was moved to the tidal basin due south of the White House. (In order to fit the memorial in its exact location, the tidal basin needed to be filled in and the sea wall needed to be realigned.
The Memorial was dedicated on April 13, 1943, on the 200th anniversary of Thomas Jefferson’s birth.

It was Leah who got off to the best start, picking up 9 correct before the first break. Even Henry getting the Daily Double didn’t really much of a dent in Leah’s advantage. Kit picked up 7 correct to eat into Leah’s advantage after the interviews, but our Westerner led after 30.

Andy’s Thoughts:
- Anything more I could say about this game are conveyed by the “Clue Selection by Row” and the “Wagering Suggestions” sections above and below. “Gotta do it all” was said by Leah—I think the final result here is the trivia gods’ rebuttal to that statement.
- Today’s box score: November 15, 2023 Box Score.

(Scores: Henry $16,700 Leah $15,400 Kit $10,600)
Leah: Standard cover bet over Kit is $5,801. (Actual bet: $15,400)
Kit: If Henry and Leah make cover bets, they fall to $2,599 and $9,599 respectively. Bet $999 or less—and pray for a Triple Stumper. (Actual bet: $5,000)

Guessed it based on the anniversary hint. I don’t really know much about the history of any of the memorials.
The Jefferson Memorial makes sense, although I could not come up with it in thirty seconds. I’ve read that 100 years ago swimming in the tidal basin was permitted and was very popular. Hard to imagine today.
Fanne Foxe
For me, the Jefferson Memorial was what came to me first, but it just seems so much older that I had second thoughts. I came up with the National Archives. Obviously I was wrong, but was surprised to find that my guess hadn’t been that “out there” since it was completed only 8 years earlier than the Jefferson Memorial. I’m guessing it took so long for Jefferson’s because Monticello was sort of his own monument to him.
Still trying to make sense of an all in wager from first place.
With the scores as they stood after DJ!, Henry was probably going to lose making the standard cover bet if he’s wrong, so going all-in is defensible as a simplification. It only hurts his chance of winning on a TS where both of the other players over-bet by a lot.
Keyword probably. Seeing how others have wagered in this tournament you just never know and simplifying things is never the best option
The anniversary hint helped me to get to the jefferson memorial because my family and I have visited that memorial previously when I was in grade school. Nothing too challenging about this final.
Irony – “Kit named her dog after Cliff Clavin from Cheers.” She was the one contestant who didn’t go all-in. Good for her.
Another funny thing about this game: STAGE NAME’S THE SAME $2000 mentioned Lucille LeSueur (aka Joan Crawford), one of the three people that Cliff Clavin said had never been in his kitchen in that infamous fictitious Final Jeopardy! clue.
Eerily ironic coincidence 🫢🧐😁
Andy, you wrote in the wagering suggestions, “Henry: Standard cover bet over Henry is $14,101.” Why would Henry make a cover bet over himself? Just kidding, I know you meant over Leah.
As for FJ, as a resident of nearby Maryland, I have visited the Jefferson Memorial with out of town guests many times so this one came to me right away.
Are these three still some of your favorite recent champs after that FJ? Just wow @ Henry quadrupling and those big bets. Leah’s I can defend (to force Henry to cover). Kit may have thought hers didn’t matter as much as it did, and just wanted to force Leah to get it right. Henry… yeah, why bet it all when you’re in the lead like that? Kit just reminded you about Clavin (and yes, I caught the stage name clue referencing Cliff’s kitchen).
And I didn’t manage to get this one. I knew it was 1776 but it didn’t occur to me that the Jefferson Memorial was that new. I thought it was like Washington’s and worked on in the 1800s for some reason. Whoops. Need to move that in my memory so it’s in the right place…
My enjoyment of Jeopardy! players comes from more than just strategic choices.
So, yes.
This Final Jeopardy would’ve been straightforward, IF one had done the math, and, knew what memorial, created in the 20th Century, honored someone from 1776.
Like today’s players I didn’t know which memorial was the correct response. I didn’t do the math, I don’t know if the players did.
30 seconds goes quicker when in a crunch…
I don’t think doing the math helps many in this case. The “150 years ago” obviously gives 1776, but there were a lot of people and events from then that deserved honoring. For 1926 + 17 years, you need to know any of those’s relation to 1943. That appears to mostly have been known by people who have been to it and paid attention to the ‘when’ (for the building, not just the honoree) as much as the ‘who’, ‘where’ and ‘why’.
For some unknown reason the Jefferson Memorial is what came to me first, but doing the math is what convinced me that it surely couldn’t be correct.
Wow, that was a totally crazy game. Henry with the furious comeback to lead going into FJ. Leah dominates the whole game. Kit plays a middling game and boom, the leaders implode and Kit wins!!! I wanted Henry, as he was a player that I watched when I got back into watching Jeopardy full-time in February 2022.
I, also, did not get FJ right.
I figured out the answer, but not in time to be able to write a response had I been a contestant. It’s not as impressive as the Lincoln Memorial, but I always visit when I walk around the basin.
Interesting strategy by Henry to stay in the Brides category with the last DD obviously in the remaining category. Maybe he wanted a bigger bank to wager with, but the risk of the leader getting the DD seems too great. The clues in the saints category ended up being not at all difficult, even the two triple stumpers. Fun game to watch, though.
