Today’s Final Jeopardy – Tuesday, November 14, 2023

Warning: This page contains spoilers for the November 14, 2023, game of Jeopardy! — please do not scroll down if you wish to avoid being spoiled. Please note that the game airs as early as noon Eastern in some U.S. television markets.

Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Historic Objects) for Tuesday, November 14, 2023 (Season 40, Game 47):

The inscription on this, made in 1753, concludes “unto all the inhabitants thereof”

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:

Emily White, a marketing manager from Wilmington, Delaware
Emily White on Jeopardy!
Brandon Deutsch, a law student from Long Beach, California
Brandon Deutsch on Jeopardy!
Nick Cascone, an orthopedic physician assistant originally from Queens, New York
Nick Cascone on Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

I am not a happy publisher this morning. I’ll get to why once I preview today’s game.

Today’s Champions Wildcard match features 2021 1-day champion Nick Cascone, 2021 3-day champion Brandon Deutsch, and 2021 2-day champion Emily White. I’d be shocked if Brandon’s interview wasn’t about how he was a student at UC-Berkeley during his run, with Cal alum Aaron Rodgers hosting—Aaron was certainly very happy at that fact nearly three years ago. In terms of a possible result today? I think yesterday’s game showed us that absolutely anything can happen, after top-seeded Emily Fiasco was bounced, with both of her two opponents clearing $20,000 before Final Jeopardy (and clearing $40,000 after it.)

There’s one other thing regarding yesterday’s game that I’d like to take some time to revisit today. There was a situation in yesterday’s game where Ken Jennings mispronounced the island of Newfoundland (as the locals will tell you, it rhymes with “Disneyland” or “understand”—Ken rhymed it with Maryland instead). However, I have a very major issue with how Ken has doubled down toward fans who took to social media to correct this mispronunciation, telling these fans that their issue is with the dictionary.

I am eschewing my usual “save it for the Saturday editorial” and pushing this onto a main recap page: Shoving Merriam-Webster in the face of a local population who is telling you how to pronounce the name of their home properly is arrogant and a bad look for the show for its official representative to act this way.

(Full disclosure: The publisher of this website is located in Mount Pearl, Newfoundland and Labrador.)

It’s not like we’re asking for a lot—Alex Trebek had no difficulty pronouncing the name properly—and it deeply hurts his legacy for his successor not to follow his lead. I am left feeling disrespected at this point, and I really hope that Ken and the show act better on this front going forward.

Correct response: What is the Liberty Bell?

The inscription on the famed Liberty Bell in Philadelphia is a quote from Leviticus 25:10—”proclaim LIBERTY throughout all the land unto all the inhabitants thereof”.

The Liberty Bell was cast for the Pennsylvania State House; it gained that name in the early 19th century when abolitionists used it as a symbol for their cause. It hasn’t been rung since 1846, when a giant crack occurred on the bell after it was rung for George Washington’s birthday that year.

Most of the round belonged to Nick and Brandon. Brandon led as a result of Nick’s missed Daily Double, while a pair of $1000 gets from Emily meant that she was still very much in contention.

Statistics at the first break (15 clues):

Brandon 7 correct 0 incorrect
Nick 6 correct 1 incorrect
Emily 0 correct 0 incorrect

Today’s interviews:

Emily is part of an all-woman J! alumni trivia team (“let it snow”).
Brandon had Aaron Rodgers as a guest host.

Nick 12 correct 2 incorrect
Emily 3 correct 0 incorrect

Double Jeopardy! Round:

(Categories: ’90s Music; Quick Cities; Baby Books; Carl Sagan; Billions & Billions; Of “Star”s)

Emily got to the first Daily Double early, but an incorrect response brought her score down to $0. The last one took awhile to come out, but Nick eventually found it, propelling himself into the lead with a $5000 bet! Nick led going into Final.

Statistics after Double Jeopardy:

Nick 22 correct 2 incorrect
Brandon 16 correct 1 incorrect
Emily 11 correct 3 incorrect
Total number of unplayed clues this season: 0 (0 today).

Scores going into Final:

Brandon $12,200
Emily $5,600

Brandon went for the small bet and the shoutout because of how the scores were—a good strategy. Unfortunately for his strategy, both Emily and Nick got Final correct; Nick went for the cover bet and is now a semifinalist!

Tonight’s results:

Emily $5,600 + $5,600 = $11,200 (What is the Liberty Bell?)
Brandon $12,200 – $199 = $12,001 (What is Thank you!!)
Nick $18,200 + $6,201 = $24,401 (What is the Liberty Bell? Love you guys!) (Semi-Finalist)

Andy’s Thoughts:

Final Jeopardy! wagering suggestions:

(Scores: Nick $18,200 Brandon $12,200 Emily $5,600)

Nick: Standard cover bet over Brandon is $6,201. However, if you really think Brandon will make a small bet here, you could limit your bet to $5,798. (Actual bet: $6,201)

Brandon: If Nick bets to cover and is incorrect, he falls to $11,999. Limit your bet to $199 or less for the best chance of victory. (Actual bet: $199)

Emily: If Nick bets properly, you have no chance of victory. However, the margins are thin. Go all in and give yourself a faint hope if Nick makes a mistake. (Actual bet: $5,600)

17 Comments on "Today’s Final Jeopardy – Tuesday, November 14, 2023"

  1. That line is also spoken by Charlton Heston in “The Ten Commandments.”

  2. Two words into the clue (and knowing historic object), I thought Liberty Bell. The rest of the clue confirmed it.

  3. The 10 commandments from the Charleton Heston movie pointed me to the liberty bell. Happy to see nick and emily getting this one today.

  4. Here is an interesting and very helpful article regarding the pronunciation of Newfoundland.

    https://journeyinggiordanos.com/how-to-pronounce-newfoundland/

    • I found that article to be confusing. Though it did clearly note several incorrect pronunciations, they were all unlikely ones. Of the two most common pronunciations, it seemed to say (separately) that both are correct. [I.e., did not literally say “both are correct”.]

  5. As a resident of the state of Nevada, I can relate to your umbrage taken with people who insist that they, rather than you, know better how to pronounce the name of the place where you live. In fact, Jeopardy’s current announcer and hosts, both past and present, continue to mispronounce “Nevada” with regularity.

  6. Hmm, how does one mispronounce Nevada ?

    • Gladys Kuzmich | November 14, 2023 at 4:12 pm |

The ‘vad’ in Nevada rhymes with bad, sad and had. Alot of people pronounce it ‘Nevoda’

      • Actually, more like “Ne-vah-da”, with a Spanish pronunciation. Nevada is a Spanish word meaning snow-covered or snowy, and would actually be pronounced “nay-vah-dah” in Spanish. Residents pronounce the state’s name “Neh-va-duh” with the middle syllable rhyming with “cat”, as many a traveling politician has learned when they use the Spanish pronunciation.

Dang 😕 I did not remember the OT quote AND I don’t remember ever learning the inscription, which is a like a double-fail😝

  8. Bill Vollmer | November 14, 2023 at 6:38 pm |

Today’s Final Jeopardy was another “I don’t know how I knew the correct response, but..”
I can’t say I knew it as soon as some of the other posters, but at least when Ken finished reading the answer, I had it.

  9. Either US or British near the revolutionary period ( 1753) , some famous historical object, kind of narrowed it down

  10. Interesting game and I was clueless on FJ, but really shouldn’t have been. Bad last 2 days to be an Emily.

  11. Given that there are many regional varieties of English, AmE and CanE being two distinct ones, insisting on a particular local pronunciation of a toponym by someone residing in another region, and broadcasting primarily to another region where another pronunciation is entrenched enough, makes as much sense as insisting on “Paree” just because that’s how the French say it.

  12. They’re probably trying to make it sound more Spanish. It reminds me of the Colorado situation, collar-A-doe vs. collar-AH-doe. I assume the second one is correct, since that’s how John Denver pronounced it.
