Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category British History) for Friday, November 3, 2023 (Season 40, Game 40):
At Leicester Cathedral in March 2015, the Archbishop of Canterbury led a religious ceremony for this deceased English monarch
(correct response beneath the contestants)
Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:
Aaron Craig, an attorney originally from Toronto, Ontario, Canada![]() |
Leah Wiegand, a stay-at-home mom from Austin, Texas![]() |
T.J. Tallie, an associate professor of African history from San Diego, California![]() |
Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:
Today’s second of three semifinals in the Diamonds bracket of Champions Wildcard features T.J. Tallie, Leah Wiegand, and Aaron Craig. I think today’s game will most likely be a battle between T.J. and Aaron—both of them had very strong games in the quarterfinals and are most likely to have momentum for the semifinals still today.

After the death of King Richard III in 1485 at the Battle of Bosworth Field, his remains were buried in the Leicester area without ceremony; by the 21st century, a concerted effort was being made to find the King’s burial site. In September 2012, an excavation of a parking lot at the former location of Grey Friars Priory discovered the burial site, and Richard III was reinterred in a March 2015 ceremony at Leicester Cathedral. Interestingly, Benedict Cumberbatch—Richard III’s third cousin 16 times removed—read a poem at the reburial.
This isn’t the first time we’ve seen a Final Jeopardy on the subject of the discovery and reinterment of Richard III; during Mattea Roach’s original run, a Final Jeopardy clue surrounded the DNA testing of the remains to those of the descendants of his sister (Anne of York).

Andy’s Thoughts:
- Late game Daily Double betting from a tied game is a situation where, unless you go all in and a correct response puts you on a the cusp of a runaway, the reward of “crush game” if you’re correct is not as good as “you’re being locked out” if incorrect. That being said: it’s not as if this is an easy situation to bet from; I don’t think Leah can at all be faulted for not having prepared beforehand for it.
- Viewers are reminded that responses also need to fit the demands of the category and that the Spanish pronunciation of “y” does not fit a category titled IT JUST SOUNDS QUESTIONABLE. Ken and the judges made the correct ruling on that clue.
- Today’s box score: November 3, 2023 Box Score.
Final Jeopardy! wagering suggestions:
(Scores: Aaron $9,800 Leah $4,400 T.J. $4,200)
T.J.: I’d limit my bet here to $3,800 or less for the best chance at second place. (Actual bet: $4,200)
Leah: The standard cover bet over T.J. is $4,001. (Actual bet: $4,400)
Aaron: As long as you bet $999 or less, you’re good! (Actual bet: $32)

I didn’t get this one. I knew no recent British monarch had died in 2015, but the idea of a reburial never even occurred to me. I had no guess.
I had no clue – I knew it was too late for the Queen Mum, and too early for Philip, and couldn’t think of anyone who had passed in between – and of course, that was the trick to the clue – it wasn’t someone who had passed in between.
Also, neither of those two people had been monarchs!
I didn’t recall hearing about that ceremony [and may not have heard about it] but I did remember “news” about Richard III being dug up in that parking lot under 10 years ago, but not very recently (and I remembered all that from the prior Jeopardy! use of it), so I assumed it was him being referenced this time.
I missed that FJ! from last year, but I remembered it and Andy mentioning the reinterment ceremony this time😁
The use of English instead of British points to a monarch from several hundred years ago but I couldn’t pin it down further.
Easy. I remember the news when his body was found buried under an asphalt parking lot. I also, saw the recent movie, The Lost King.
Yes, it received a fair amount of coverage on the BBC news at the time. Would-be Jeopardy! contestants ought to include the BBC news in their preparation.
Same here. The news about being found under the asphalt in the parking lot was odd enough that it stuck in my memory (not sure whether it was the 2012 discovery or the 2015 ceremony that I was remembering). Never saw the movie though.
I knew it was the king found under the asphalt, couldn’t remember the name, so I was at least in the ballpark.
That name richard the third was one of the characters i. A Shakespeare play. Although i remember the play but him dug up from that parking lot still etched in my memories.
I had ZERO clue on FJ, but I’m not good with the British Royal Family anyway. Nice win and last second runaway by Craig. He may be originally be from Canada, but now he lives extremely close to me, so I guess I’ll cheer for him in next Tuesday and Wednesday’s finals. The 3rd semi-final on Monday should be good.
Peace out everyone and have a great weekend and enjoy the extra hour if you get it.
Like many others, I was lost in trying to figure out who the Final Jeopardy answer refered to. Ignoring the clue ‘monarch” was thinking Prince Phillip, the Queen Mother, even. Princess Diana. But since we know they weren’t monarchs, they’re wrong.
If I had hears of Richard III remains being found, and, reinterned in the Catederal, I certainly didn’t remember it.
