Winter 2024 Second Chance Competition: Week 3 Preview

January 2 will see the start of Week #3 of Winter 2024’s Second Chance with eight more Season 39 players (and one who should have appeared in Season 39) returning for a chance at a spot in Champions Wildcard. Here are those nine returnees:

Tuesday, January 2, 2024:

Sophia Weng
Chevy Chase, Maryland
Sophia Weng on Jeopardy!
14 correct, 3 incorrect
0/0 on rebound attempts (on 2 rebound opportunities)
28.07% in first on buzzer (16/57)
0/0 on Daily Doubles
1/1 in Final Jeopardy
Average Coryat: $6,800
Sophia’s first game: June 19, 2019

Along with Rotimi Kukoyi, Sophia was one of three players who was unable to take part in the 2023 High School Reunion Tournament; she finished 13th of 15 players in the June 2019 Teen Tournament.
Sharon Bishop
Pawtucket, Rhode Island
Sharon Bishop on Jeopardy!
19 correct, 4 incorrect
2/2 on rebound attempts (on 5 rebound opportunities)
31.58% in first on buzzer (18/57)
1/2 on Daily Doubles (Net Earned: $0)
0/1 in Final Jeopardy
Average Coryat: $18,600
Sharon’s first game: July 28, 2023

Sharon very nearly beat Lucas Partridge in the final game of Season 39. And, yes, I’m reasonably certain that this is the first time a non-winning player in regular play gets to make another appearance on the show before the player she lost to.
Michael Cavaliere
New York, New York
Michael Cavaliere on Jeopardy!
25 correct, 4 incorrect
2/2 on rebound attempts (on 6 rebound opportunities)
40.35% in first on buzzer (23/57)
2/3 on Daily Doubles (Net Earned: $3,200)
0/1 in Final Jeopardy
Average Coryat: $20,200
Michael’s first game: January 13, 2023

Michael was leading Yogesh Raut going into Final Jeopardy but couldn’t seal the deal.

Overall Thoughts: I understand that anything can happen in these matches, but I also feel as though the stars have aligned here for Michael—who is a strong enough player to lead Yogesh Raut going into Final Jeopardy—to dominate this one. (I really hope I don’t end up looking silly Tuesday evening.)

Andrew Whatley
Beauregard, Alabama
Andrew Whatley on Jeopardy!
19 correct, 1 incorrect
1/2 on rebound attempts (on 4 rebound opportunities)
28.07% in first on buzzer (16/57)
1/1 on Daily Doubles (Net Earned: $5,800)
1/1 in Final Jeopardy
Average Coryat: $15,800
Andrew’s first game: January 11, 2023

Andrew’s another player who lost to Yogesh Raut; Andrew put up over $20,000 going into Final Jeopardy.
Randall Rayford
Houston, Texas
Randall Rayford on Jeopardy!
16 correct, 1 incorrect
2/2 on rebound attempts (on 4 rebound opportunities)
24.56% in first on buzzer (14/57)
0/0 on Daily Doubles
0/1 in Final Jeopardy
Average Coryat: $12,600
Randall’s first game: November 30, 2022

Randall lost to Cris Pannullo in Cris’s 18th game.
Rachel Cohen
Chevy Chase, Maryland
Rachel Cohen on Jeopardy!
20 correct, 4 incorrect
1/1 on rebound attempts (on 3 rebound opportunities)
36.84% in first on buzzer (21/57)
0/1 on Daily Doubles (Net Earned: -$4,000)
1/1 in Final Jeopardy
Average Coryat: $15,800
Rachel’s first game: December 29, 2022

Rachel was the third player in Ray Lalonde’s 11th game; Emily Kawaler also lost that day (we saw her this past week in Second Chance.)

Overall Thoughts: This one feels like anyone can win; all three people in this one faced very difficult opposition.

Matt Harvey
Providence, Rhode Island
Matt Harvey on Jeopardy!
23 correct, 6 incorrect
4/5 on rebound attempts (on 7 rebound opportunities)
36.84% in first on buzzer (21/57)
2/2 on Daily Doubles (Net Earned: $7,000)
0/1 in Final Jeopardy
Average Coryat: $17,000
Matt’s first game: November 29, 2022

Matt was just $2,600 behind Cris Pannullo going into Final Jeopardy in Cris’s 17th game.
Max Davison
Studio City, California
Max Davison on Jeopardy!
22 correct, 6 incorrect
1/1 on rebound attempts (on 2 rebound opportunities)
43.86% in first on buzzer (25/57)
0/1 on Daily Doubles (Net Earned: -$4,000)
0/1 in Final Jeopardy
Average Coryat: $16,400
Max’s first game: January 10, 2023

Max put up 22 correct responses in a losing effort against Connor Sears. One thing I noted during Max’s initial appearance that I’d like to follow up on: Max’s father Mike Davison’s victory on March 11, 1997 is now the most recent game that is not in J! Archive.
Kelly Shannon-Henderson
Cincinnati, Ohio
Kelly Shannon-Henderson on Jeopardy!
21 correct, 5 incorrect
3/4 on rebound attempts (on 4 rebound opportunities)
35.09% in first on buzzer (20/57)
1/1 on Daily Doubles (Net Earned: $5,000)
0/1 in Final Jeopardy
Average Coryat: $16,400
Kelly’s first game: September 20, 2022

Kelly’s initial appearance saw her lead ToCer Emmett Stanton going into Final Jeopardy.

Overall Thoughts:  This feels like a very evenly-matched game; I’m hard-pressed to predict anybody, to be honest. I could absolutely see any of these three players winning this match-up.

  1. Thank you for the preview Andy. I am looking forward to watching this week for sure. I was there on December 5th for the morning taping and got to see the games to be played on Tuesday through Thursday. I didn’t stick around for the afternoon session to see what happens in the Finals. Enjoy everyone, as I am obligated to stay mum! 🙂
