Andy’s Pre-Game Thoughts:
After a semifinal last week where the lead changed a handful of times over the last ten clues, I’m not entirely sure what this group can do for an encore! This week’s second semifinalists are Steven Weber (Wings), sports commentator Katie Nolan, and Dulé Hill (ABC’s The Wonder Years). I’m expecting to see a tightly-contested match-up; Katie has already beaten one player with Jeopardy experience in Christopher Meloni; there’s nothing that says that she can’t do it again to Steven Weber!
Another reminder that I have started a Sunday mailbag column where I answer fan & viewer questions regarding the show. If you have a question, feel free to send it to mailbag@thejeopardyfan.com!

Jeopardy! Round:
(Categories: Numerical Place Names; Can I Get An “A” Men!; Countries That Start With “I”; Dating Apps; Kitty Lit; “Dis”continued)
Both Steven and Katie got off to the best starts, though Steven led at the first commercial break on the strength of a pair of $500 correct responses. Steven found another gear, though, with a True Daily Double, that put him in a very strong position after 30 clues!
Statistics after 15 clues:
Steven 6 correct 0 incorrect
Katie 5 correct 0 incorrect
Dulé 2 correct 1 incorrect
Scores after 15 clues:
Steven $1,700
Katie $1,300
Dulé $300
Today’s first interviews:
Dulé thinks he’ll “survive” in the more difficult semifinal.
Katie has remembered that math and money management aren’t strong suits.
Steven thinks “it feels good to be this smart”.
Statistics after the Jeopardy round:
Steven 12 correct 0 incorrect
Katie 10 correct 1 incorrect
Dulé 2 correct 2 incorrect
Scores after the Jeopardy! Round:
Steven $5,400
Katie $2,000
Dulé $0
Double Jeopardy! Round:
(Categories: It’s A Date, Amigo!; Number One Hits; Non-Musical Theatre; New York Times Obituaries; “J” Law; Animal Idiom Brainteasers)
It took all of 11 clues for Katie to reel in Steven’s lead; she was mostly aided by ANIMAL IDIOM BRAINTEASERS. However, Steven did well in NON-MUSICAL THEATRE to regain a bit of a lead at the 45-clue mark. Coming out of the break, Steven ran the obituaries category, saying he often reads them—eliciting a savage “Are you looking for your friends?” comment from Katie—easily one of the best one-liners I have ever heard on any version of the show. Dulé doubled up through the last Daily Double to come back into the game a little bit.
Statistics after 45 clues:
Steven 17 correct 0 incorrect
Katie 17 correct 1 incorrect
Dulé 3 correct 2 incorrect
Scores after 45 clues:
Steven $8,000
Katie $6,200
Dulé $400
Today’s second interviews:
Dulé is a huge fan of the show, dating back to the ’80s.
Katie prepared by doing a lot of Googling when she encountered things she wasn’t aware of.
Steven has been a clue many times, which was apparently news to him; his friends didn’t tell him.
Statistics after Double Jeopardy:
Steven 24 correct 0 incorrect
Katie 21 correct 1 incorrect
Dulé 7 correct 2 incorrect
Scores after the Double Jeopardy! Round:
Steven $20,200
Katie $8,400
Dulé $5,200
Triple Jeopardy! Round:
(Categories: Cybersecurity; Female Firsts; Fairy Tale Adaptations; Opposites Of Novel Titles; On The Periodic Table; There’s An “App” For That)
It took six clues—and two Daily Doubles—for Katie to take the lead. A back-and-forth battle for most of Triple Jeopardy broke Katie’s way late when she found the third Daily Double; her correct response on that made sure she led going into Final Jeopardy!
Statistics after Triple Jeopardy:
Katie 34 correct 1 incorrect
Steven 30 correct 0 incorrect
Dulé 12 correct 3 incorrect
Scores going into Final:
Katie $36,400
Steven $27,400
Dulé $6,700
Final Jeopardy correct response: What is the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II?
This Final Jeopardy was a Triple Stumper; Steven’s bet of everything sent Katie through to the finals!
Tonight’s results:
Dulé $6,700 – $6,700 = $0 (What I don’t know)
Steven $27,400 – $27,400 = $0 (What is the end)
Katie $36,400 – $19,000 = $17,400 (What is Beatlemania?) (Finalist)

- With all due respect to Sarah Foss, I personally enjoyed this week’s semifinal more than last week’s!

(Scores: Katie $36,400 Steven $27,400 Dulé $6,700)

Katie: Standard cover bet over Steven is $18,401. (Actual bet: $19,000)
Dulé: Bet whatever you like; you can’t win unless Katie overbets. (Actual bet: $6,700)

If I didn’t already love Katie Nolan, her comments after NEW YORK TIMES OBITUARIES $1,000 would absolutely be enough to make me a superfan!
I didn’t know the year of this event, but the keywords BBC made me almost automatically say “What was the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II?” Maybe if anyone had said Coronation of Queen Elizabeth it would have been accepted, since 1953 would have to be the recently departed monarch, I didn’t hear Ken say Queen Elizabeth II, when he gave the correct response. But wouldn’t Jeopardy SOP require Queen Elizabeth II?
SOP and past precedent appears to be “you can leave off the regnal number, but if you include one, it had better be the correct one.”
I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if they just accepted “the coronation”.
Funnest game I’ve seen in a long time. Kind of glad Steven overbet, and Katie was clearly played the best game overall.
I, too, laughed when Katie said that to Steven about the obituaries, but I don’t see the big deal about it as it was already a classic one-liner. But she did employ it pretty well.
I think everyone was just surprised, because you’re not expecting to hear it during a game of Jeopardy.
