Warning: This page may contain spoilers for the January 9, 2024 game of Jeopardy! UK, especially for those of you watching delayed or on-demand. This page will be updated during each commercial break as the show airs.
Today’s contestants:
Richard Clark, an I.T. service architect from Penarth![]() |
Sabina Crouch, a copywriter from Milton Keynes![]() |
Keshava Guha, a writer from London (3-day total: £14,650)![]() |
Andy’s Pre-Game Thoughts:
Keshava Guha just keeps winning; his last two victories have been in runaway fashion and has already picked up £14,650 in three victories on the programme.
Today’s challengers are Sabina Crouch from Milton Keynes, and Welshman Richard Clark. Neither challenger has recent OQL experience, so it’s a little bit more difficult to get a read on how today’s match might go!
It also seems that a lot of the recent online criticism of the show is coming from viewers who aren’t British; it might be prudent to remind everyone that if you’re not British, this show isn’t being made for you, and you mean nothing to the advertising dollars that support the show. The entitlement of people thinking that every single piece of media needs to be made for them is appalling, in my opinion, and it’s an entitlement that needs to cease forthwith.
Another reminder that I have started a Sunday mailbag column where I answer fan & viewer questions regarding the show. If you have a question, feel free to send it to mailbag@thejeopardyfan.com!

Andy’s Thoughts:
- It should be noted that Jeopardy! rules in the United States allow “overfull” song titles to be accepted as correct, provided the extra lyrics added to the title are correct. (Thus “Hit Me Baby One More Time” is considered equivalently correct to “…Baby One More Time”). It is clear that the UK production is following those same rules.
Final Jeopardy! wagering suggestions:
(Scores: Richard £4,850 Keshava £3,950 Sabina £1,225)
Keshava: Bet between £901 (passing Richard’s total by £1) and £1,499 (keeping Sabina locked out). (Actual bet: £901)
Sabina: Bet at least £575 to pass Richard if he bets to cover and is incorrect. (Actual bet: £1,224)
Richard: Standard cover bet is £3,051. (Actual bet: £4,850)

I was very surprised to see that Richard had bet it all. He could have still insured a win (if he got FJ correct) AND increased the chance of coming in second (if wrong), if he had bet £3,051 instead.
Is the UK prize money difference between 2nd and 3rd not enough to risk “trying for 1st” math mistakes?
There’s no indication that there is a prize for second and third – which takes some of the fun out of FJ wagering in my opinion.
I don’t believe there is, though, unlike Stateside, their trip to the studio (in Greater Manchester) is paid for.
i know Americans’ opinions about the British Jeopardy! don’t matter in the long run but still? i love it. i absolutely love it. it’s a different take on Jeopardy! than we’re used to in the American version, but it’s one i’ve found immediately cozy and delightful. the pacing feels really good for the hour slot, and as someone is just given to things like banter and adding ancillary facts to things, Stephen Fry’s flow clicks in so well with how my brain works.
I love ancillary facts and asides, but Stephen’s echolalia grates me every time.
With all due respect, the “echolalia” (assuming you’re actually using the term per its definition) is a production decision made specifically because British Jeopardy, unlike American Jeopardy, is not appointment television. Being seven episodes in, Whisper (the production company producing the shows in the UK) and ITV have to assume that a viewer could be tuning in for the very first time midway through an episode, and that viewer needs to be brought up to speed on “what has happened” and “what is going on” as quickly as possible. Certainly unnecessary for a viewer in North America who would be intimately familiar with the proceedings, but absolutely necessary for a British viewer unfamiliar with this game.
Yes, I am. Echolalia is the unsolicited repetition of vocalizations made by another person (not to be confused with palilalia). Do you find repeating the category and the amount after every contestant useful?
Echolalia is a medical term and a symptom of a psychiatric condition. As you, as a viewer, presumably do not know Mr. Fry’s medical history, you do not get to make that diagnosis.
Try again, but better.
I must admit I don’t really “keep up with” British political news. I do hear about the highlights, but do not even try to retain it. [I did pay more attention during the BREXIT period, just because I had strong opinions, LOL.] But I found it very amusing that 2 of the 3 British contestants made the same FJ guess that I did (5). It seems that Keshava’s response was a bit of a guess, too, but perhaps he was naming them off in his mind, then before it was too late decided one of them didn’t fit the time frame.
An average Coryat of £3,994 is about equivalent to $22,450 in North America.
There probably won’t be (given how the series is 20 episodes), but if there’s some sort of champion reunion tournament, Keshava’s looking like he might be one to watch. He’s crazy good.
