Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Historic Americans) for Thursday, January 4, 2024 (Season 40, Game 84):

They went their separate ways in 1806 & both became territorial governors: one of Upper Louisiana, the other of Missouri

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:

Kelly Shannon-Henderson, a classics professor from Cincinnati, Ohio
Kelly Shannon-Henderson on Jeopardy!
Max Davison, a writer from Studio City, California
Max Davison on Jeopardy!
Matt Harvey, a healthcare administrator from Providence, Rhode Island
Matt Harvey on Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

Today’s game is Semifinal #3 of Week #3 of Winter 2024’s Second Chance competition, with today’s game featuring Matt Harvey (who was just $2,600 behind Cris Pannullo going into Final Jeopardy), Max Davison (who put up 22 correct responses in a losing effort), and Kelly Shannon-Henderson (who led ToCer Emmett Stanton going into Final Jeopardy).

One thing that I mentioned in my preview over the weekend—in his initial appearance, Max’s dad Mike gave Max a shout-out in Final Jeopardy on March 11, 1997. That specific episode is currently the most recent game that is not in J! Archive.

Another reminder that I have started a Sunday mailbag column where I answer fan & viewer questions regarding the show. If you have a question, feel free to send it to mailbag@thejeopardyfan.com!

(The following write-up is original content and is copyright 2024 The Jeopardy! Fan. It may not be copied without linked attribution back to this page.)

After their famous expedition from 1803 through 1806 in which they explored the recently purchased Louisiana Territory, both Meriwether Lewis and William Clark were in the good graces of American presidents; Lewis was named the second governor of the Louisiana Territory in 1807, serving until his 1809 death (under circumstances which will likely never truly be known), while Clark was appointed as the fourth governor of the territory by James Madison in 1813. (In the interim, the territory had been renamed from the Louisiana Territory to the Missouri Territory due to Louisiana’s 1812 statehood.)

This feels like a straightforward Final Jeopardy clue to me; the only other major American historical pair I could think of would be Mason & Dixon—and they don’t really fit the time period.

Final Jeopardy! wagering suggestions:

(Scores: Matt $16,400 Kelly $12,400 Max $9,000)

Matt: Standard cover bet over Kelly is $8,401. (Actual bet: $13,000)

Max: Limit your bet to $1,000 and hope for a Triple Stumper and a big bet from Kelly. (Actual bet: $0)

Kelly: You’re in Stratton’s Dilemma; you can’t both cover Max and win the Double Stumper with Matt. However, being that Max’s best play is a small bet, you might consider a small bet yourself. Limit your bet to $2,400 or less in this case. (Actual bet: $5,601)

  1. Seemed simple enough. William Clark is buried here in St. Louis. I’ve visited his grave. Written on his stone is “His Life Is Written in the History of His Country.”

  2. Didn’t need to read further than 1806. Helped to have read considerably about that period of history.

  3. Hearing about the expedition that lewis and Clark went on and the help of the Shoshone tribe led me to this response. Great play today.

  4. Bill Vollmer | January 4, 2024 at 6:48 pm |

Andy; we were on the same wavelength. When the answer was revealed I immediately thought of Lewis and Clark, especially when the Louisana Territory was mentioned. Also briefly considered Mason and Dixon, but as you, when I double checked the time frame knew they didn’t fit. A relatively straight forward Final Jeopardy for a get on my record.

  5. I was quite surprised by Ken’s initial acceptance of “overcorrection” as a correct response, and I got my satisfaction when it was reversed. Now I wonder if “to overcorrection” can be a colloquial verb in some dialects.

Perhaps Ken had accepted the response because he was expecting to hear “overcorrecting”?

  6. Why did Max Davison lose $2400 on a $1200 question? On the wrong answer of “Overcorrecting” or am I missing something?

  7. This was a fun and competitive game to see in person. Yes, this FJ came to me right away when I was there for this taping. I am rather decent in U.S. history of this time frame.

Time for a very interesting 2 day final starting tomorrow. I didn’t stick around for the afternoon taping after watching these past 3 games in person and am very interested in see how it all plays out.

Matt and Randall both lost their initial games on back to back “days” to Cris Pannullo and Michael lost to Yogesh Raut in his 3rd and final win. Definitely strong players to lose to.

I’ll go with Michael winning, due to his quickness with the buzzer. Seriously though, this could be anyone’s match to win. Randall getting the DD’s would be huge, as he seems very willing to make a huge wager.

Enjoy the finals folks and can’t wait to see the return of April Marquet next Tuesday. Her loss was anguishing to her and the audience & I’ll be pulling for her.
