Warning: This page may contain spoilers for the January 19, 2024 game of Jeopardy! UK, especially for those of you watching delayed or on-demand. This page will be updated during each commercial break as the show airs.
Today’s contestants:
Matt Barr, an AI content specialist from Archway![]() |
Emma Laslett, a disability benefits officer from Milton Keynes![]() |
Michael Hutchinson, a maths teacher from Reading (5-day total: £30,551)![]() |
Andy’s Pre-Game Thoughts:
Michael Hutchinson is the first 5-time champion in the run of Jeopardy! UK, having averaged more than £6,000 a victory. As I said yesterday, being that there are 9,600 “points” on a UK board and 54,000 “points” on a US board, Michael’s current haul of £30,551 is the equivalent of having won $171,849 on US boards—which would place him #8 all-time had it happened in the United States. Seeing this performance, it absolutely would not surprise me to see Michael as a UK representative in an international tournament in the future.
On to today’s game, your challengers are London’s Matt Barr and Milton Keynes’s Emma Laslett. Both of these challengers are very strong; I am very much hoping for an exciting battle on today’s game!
Also: After what happened on Twitter on Wednesday, I want to make the following statement: If you have an issue with gender presentation, that is your problem, and you need help. You trying to make it everyone else’s problem is actively making the world as a whole worse. Transphobia has no place in the world or in this community.
Another reminder that I have started a Sunday mailbag column where I answer fan & viewer questions regarding the show. If you have a question, feel free to send it to mailbag@thejeopardyfan.com!

Ho much money did Micheal Win altogether
He left with £30,551.
Andy, once again I would like to thank you for being a wonderful supporter of the community and the diversity of people drawn to Jeopardy!
Emma gave one of her answers in French and whilst Stephen ticked her off for doing so, I think he should have deemed it an incorrect answer, as her response should have been either ‘What is’ or ‘Who is’.
Ken Jennings was once given credit for “Que es nada?”
It was fine, added some humour and levity to the proceedings, and you should probably investigate how to remove sticks from posteriors.
LOL
The “respond in the form of a question” rule only means you have to respond in question form. Outside of that, you’re (mostly) free to do what you want.
Matt Amodio proved this in 2021 by winning thirty-eight games in which he never (okay, other than maybe once or twice) started any of his responses with anything other than “What’s” regardless of if the answer was a person or not.
Aside from that and what Andy mentioned, there have been past instances of players translating the “what/who is” in a correct response to French and still getting credit.
And, given that Emma’s margin of runaway by Final Jeopardy! was over £3,500, the only thing it would have ultimately changed is how much money she walked away with that day.
Wasn’t there a recent Celebrity Jeopardy! game in which the core of the intended response to the clue was a question itself [for example, a quote of Urkel’s “Did I do that?”] and the player just said that question, not somehow wrapping it within another question and Ken not only said it was correct, but added something about that being an acceptable version of “in the form of a question”?
I cannot swear I did not dream that, but I really think it happened. Does anyone else remember that, especially better? I know Celebrity Jeopardy! gets a little more leeway on some things, but as I recall it did not seem that Ken was implying that.
