Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category American Artists) for Friday, January 19, 2024 (Season 40, Game 95):

In the 1920s he used wire, string & other materials to fabricate “models in motion” for a miniature circus scene

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:

Rachel Clark, a director of client strategy from Washington, D.C.
Rachel Clark on Jeopardy!
Erin Portman, a high school English teacher from Naperville, Illinois
Erin Portman on Jeopardy!
Bryan White, a senior regulatory compliance analyst originally from Santa Maria, California
Bryan White on Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

This morning sees quarterfinal #4 of Winter 2024’s Champions Wildcard, and I am expecting a very good match today! Bryan White was a strong player in his initial run who averaged 23 correct responses. Erin Portman averaged 22 and came within an eyelash of relegating Troy Meyer to Second Chance, while Rachel made absolute mincemeat of her opposition in one of the Play-In games on TuneIn Radio

Correct response: Who is Alexander Calder?

(The following write-up is original content and is copyright 2024 The Jeopardy! Fan. It may not be copied without linked attribution back to this page.)

In the late 1920s, Alexander Calder, known for works of art referred to as “mobiles”, began work on what became known as Cirque Calder; it was built to depict circus performers and Calder would improvise circus shows using it. It was Calder’s first major work and launched his multi-decade career.

Cirque Calder can be seen today at the Whitney Museum in New York.

Honestly, I think this will be a straightforward Final Jeopardy clue for anyone who can connect the description to “mobiles” and therefore Calder.

Brian’s gambit to let his opponents find the Daily Doubles (his Clue Selection chart below has 3 1s, 2 daggers, and a combined 1-dagger on it) worked for him in this one, as both Rachel and Erin lost money on those betting clues. This led to Bryan leading going into Final Jeopardy!

Andy’s Thoughts:

  • Play the game however you like, but I also want to make clear that people read this website for strategic advice—and I’d be doing them a disservice if I didn’t point out instances where people were actively trying to avoid Daily Doubles.
  • Today’s box score: January 19, 2024 Box Score.

Final Jeopardy! wagering suggestions:

(Scores: Bryan $12,200 Erin $11,200 Rachel $10,000)

Bryan: Standard cover bet over Erin is $10,201. (Actual bet: $10,300)

Erin: Standard cover bet over Rachel is $8,801, but I wouldn’t blame you if you wanted to bump that number up to $8,900 or $9,000. (Actual bet: $9,000)

Rachel: Play for a Triple Stumper here; bet no more than $7,599. (Actual bet: $1,201)

  1. “Who is Alexander Calder?” The master of mobiles, straightforward indeed.

  2. The master of mobiles got me to Calder. I love his works.

  3. For Calder lovers… Calder Gardens and Museum will be built in Center City Philadelphia along the Ben Franklin Parkwsy!

  4. Parkway – sorry for typo.

  5. Bill Vollmer | January 19, 2024 at 6:47 pm |

Yes; this Final Jeopardy was straight forward for those who could put the type of art described with Calder. Unfortunately, even though I know of Calder, and, his mobiles, I couldn’t.
Nice to see that Erin is from one of Chicago’s larger suburbs, and, my general region.
Hope she has success in her semi-final, then the final.

From 1980 to 1984, the US Mint produced a series of 1/2 ounce and 1 ounce gold bullion
medallions to compete with the South African Krugerrand. In 1983, the 1/2 ounce medallion depicted Alexander Calder. It was because of that series that I was able to correctly respond to the FJ clue. Anyone else know about Calder from those medallions?

    • Nope, never heard of those. I knew Calder from his mobiles. I did not realize his work went back that far (1920s per the clue) nor do I recall anything circus-related, but he is who I immediately guessed the clue was about.

  7. Anyone else come up with Rube Goldberg?
Never heard of Calder, although this is probably due to the fact that I do not recognise the “post-modernists” as an artistic school. Plus, mobiles are one of the least interesting forms of aforementioned post modernist works.

    • While in the past only looking at various pictures, I kind of liked them but did have a bit of “seen one, seen them all” feeling, but then I saw a very big one in some museum [I don’t remember which museum] and could then really appreciate them. That installation was within an atrium-like area inside the museum so you could stand under it, pass by the sides as you climbed and then look down on it. It moved constantly on air currents one could not even feel. I loved it!

  8. I had zero idea on today’s FJ. Retro congrats to Erin on her win in a great game by all 3 players. She was my selection in Andy’s preview. I missed in Game 1, but have gotten the winner correct in Games 2 to 4. Fon Monday’s Quarterfinal #5 I have Daniel Moore to win. See what happens then! Have a great weekend everyone!
