Today’s Final Jeopardy – Friday, March 8, 2024

Warning: This page contains spoilers for the March 8, 2024, game of Jeopardy! — please do not scroll down if you wish to avoid being spoiled. Please note that the game airs as early as noon Eastern in some U.S. television markets.

Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Literature & Religion) for Friday, March 8, 2024 (Season 40, Game 130):

This city now in Turkey is the addressee of one of the New Testament epistles & the setting for “The Comedy of Errors”

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:

Emily Sands, a project manager from Chanhassen, Minnesota
Emily Sands on Jeopardy!
Yogesh Raut, a social and personality psychologist from Vancouver, Washington
Yogesh Raut on Jeopardy!
David Sibley, an Episcopal priest from Walla Walla, Washington
David Sibley on Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

After Ben Chan narrowly advanced to the finals yesterday, today’s game sees what I described in my preview as “the Rose Bowl semifinal”—as Minnesota’s Emily Sands takes on Washington’s David Sibley and Yogesh Raut. (Before I get lots of comments today: yes, I know Vancouver, WA is a suburb of Portland, OR, but Oregon’s in the Pac-12 as well.)

I’m expecting a very closely contested match today; all three players are very capable of taking victory, though Yogesh showed in the quarterfinal that he is capable of winning without Daily Doubles. I do think it’ll reach a point where he will need to find one—at this level, it is incredibly difficult to win on Coryat score alone.

I didn’t realize that Jeopardy! could write a Tournament of Champions Final Jeopardy about the New Testament epistles without making an authorship claim!

This Final Jeopardy boils down to “Where is Shakespeare’s The Comedy of Errors set?”, with the New Testament side of the clue being enough to narrow down your guess if you know more about that half of the clue. I doubt it’ll be enough to keep the rage train from happening, though, from people who see red every time the Bible is even whispered on the show, even though the much more useful half of the clue is about Shakespeare. The Comedy of Errors is a well-known Shakespearean farce surrounding mistaken identity set in Ephesus, while Ephesians is one of a few epistles addressed to a group located in what is now Turkey (Colossians and Galatians are other examples).

Interestingly, Ephesus, known in antiquity as the site of the Temple of Artemis was abandoned completely by the 15th century, more than a century before The Comedy of Errors was written. The site of Ephesus is nearby the modern-day Turkish town of Selçuk.

17 Comments on "Today’s Final Jeopardy – Friday, March 8, 2024"

  1. I guessed “What is Constantinople (now Istanbul)?” It was the only city in Turkey I could think of. It seems I don’t know my Shakespeare or the Bible. (I hope David Sibley, the Episcopalian priest, gets this one!)

    • I guessed Ankara as it was the only city I could think of in Turkey other than Istanbul, which I thought was unlikely to be the one intended. [I guess I thought Istanbul was not “vague” enough, but that probably goes for Ankara, too.]

    • I guessed Istanbul as well. 🙁

  2. This should be a triple get at this level of competition. I’ve seen Comedy of Errors a couple of times and am generally familiar with St.Paul’s letter to the Ephesians, although I haven’t actually read it.

  3. The only biblical person I could think of with an address in Turkey was an old testament fellow named Noah who parked his ark on Mount Ararat. So, no…I had nothing.

    • I assume you are making a joke about “address”. Admittedly, Noah popped into my mind, too, upon hearing “Turkey”.

  4. Got it, with an educated guess about NT epistles.

  5. Jim Cardillo | March 8, 2024 at 12:07 pm |

Went with Antioch and didn’t think of Ephesus until reading Andy’s comments.

  6. Second straight day where theatre helped me to the correct response.

No matter who wins Monday’s game, this is going to be a barn-burner of a final.

  7. Katerina E. | March 8, 2024 at 2:53 pm |

I only knew this one because my little brother and his wife are on a trip around the Mediterranean right now, and one of their stops a couple of days ago was Ephesus.

  8. The Shakespeare did nothing to me, and I only remembered the names of two epistles – to the Corinthians and to the Ephesians. Corinth is obviously in Greece (because of the isthmus of Corinth), and I guessed Ephes*s, not remembering exactly if it’s Ephesus or Ephesos.
Given that both could be read /ˈɛfɪsəs/, I consider my guess correct.

  9. Bill Vollmer | March 8, 2024 at 6:30 pm |

The Shakespere referece in today’s Final Jeopardy menat nothing to me. The first letter (epistle) of Paul I could think of was ro the Thessolians, My catchesiim teachers will be disppointed.

  10. Robert J. Fawkes | March 8, 2024 at 6:37 pm |

I was able to get today’s final thanks to “Veggie Tales.” LOL. If you know, you know.

  11. Regarding your “Rose Bowl semifinal” comment — I think it fails, but not for the reason one might originally think. The reference to college football is retrospective, not forward looking.

Even then, conference realignment isn’t what makes it inapposite. Though Gophers vs. either Huskies or Ducks will become a Big Ten matchup from this year onwards, both Oregon and Washington have schools in the remnant of the Pac-12. (And you certainly don’t need to remind me that Corvallis is closer to Portland than is Eugene.)

The reason why it doesn’t work is because of the expanded College Football Playoff. With the CFP going to 12 teams starting this fall, all of the New Year’s Six games, including the Rose Bowl, will annually be playoff games, with each being a quarterfinal in the two years out of three that it isn’t a semifinal. Thus, the traditional Big Ten vs. Pac-12 matchup in Pasadena is permanently dead.

The callback to tradition may be romantic, but it has to be noted that you haven’t exactly been wedded to it in the Jeopardy! realm in recent months.

  12. Okay, these FJ’s in the ToC are killing me! I went a great 0 for 5 this week and have a 9 game losing streak. Maybe they’ll have a NASCAR or bowling FJ question on Monday. Those are much more in my wheelhouse. 🙂

Retro congrats to Yogesh on a dominating Semifinal. The man has skills! 🙂 Now he’s joining Ben Chan in the Final. I had Emily winning today, though I acknowledged that DD’s were crucial for her and missing out on that huge DD was definitely a huge moment in the game.

I can’t wait for Monday (well, yes I can….I like my off of work weekends) to see who joins these 2 guys. My money is on Troy, but we’ll see. It’s going to be quite an epic final starting on Tuesday.

Just saw an update on the official Jeopardy website and see that Yogesh has drawn the all important Lectern #1 for the final. That leaves Lectern #2 for the winner of Monday’s game.
