This game’s Jeopardy! Masters contestants:

Matt Amodio, a quantitative researcher from New York, New York (42-14, 1 points)
Matt Amodio in Jeopardy! Masters Season 2
James Holzhauer, the self-described “final boss” of Jeopardy! from Las Vegas, Nevada (47-9, 6 points)
James Holzhauer in Jeopardy! Masters Season 2
Yogesh Raut, a cognitive & behavioral scientist from Vancouver, Washington (11-6, 10 points)
Yogesh Raut in Jeopardy! Masters Season 2

Andy’s Pre-Game Thoughts:

The opening game of tonight’s Masters episode, between Yogesh Raut, James Holzhauer, and Matt Amodio, is for all intents and purposes a dead rubber; James would pretty much have to be completely silent the entire game to have any chance of not advancing, while Yogesh has clinched and Matt is locked into sixth place. That being said: all three of these players are competitors and I am expecting just as much competition as I’ve seen the previous five episodes from these three.

  1. Kudos to Matt for fighting until the very, very end.

And hey, he’s the only Master this entire tournament to be 100% in Final Jeopardy 🙂

    • Nice stat, thanks for pointing that out.

I was surprised James bet anything other than 4001 on FJ, given the situation. That would’ve let Matt go out with a win, which is what I was rooting for.

      • I don’t blame anyone for their bets last night, because this was a very bizarre situation.

Yes, James could bet 4,001 points just to cover Yogesh, but that would lead to him falling to 12,399 on a miss – exactly 1 point behind Matt if he chose to bet nothing. And Matt has very good reason to do so, given that he and Yogesh have created a weird Faith Love-esque scenario; Yogesh needs to stay above 8,000 to have any shot at winning on a Triple Stumper (assuming James makes the minimum cover bet), but that means his maximum wager is 2,199, which brings Yogesh to 12,399 on a right answer – once again, 1 point behind Matt if he chose to bet nothing.

My best understanding is that James wagered to cover Matt’s doubled score, Matt wagered for the possibility of James reading the situation as you suggested and betting 4,001, and Yogesh wagered for the possibility of Matt reading the situation as I suggested and betting nothing. Unorthodox, absolutely. But I cannot and will not fault any of the three players for betting what they did.

  2. Appreciate your comment. Would he have gotten algorithm / logarithm (with his background)?

    • Possible? Maybe. But given how Yogesh, Amy, and Mattea – who all excel at wordplay clues IIRC – combined for all of two half-guesses, I don’t think it’s probable.

  3. This was a FJ that I found to be pretty easy, especially for a tournament of this caliber and also because I got right and if I get it right, it must be easy. 😉

  4. Glad that Matt had a good final game in the tourney. I am sure that it was a surprise to many how good Victoria and Yogesh were in the tournament.

I was way off in trying to come up with the correct response to this Final Jeopardy. For some strange reason, I said “what are the Joint Chiefs of Staff?” The newest military wasn’t even a thought. I know of it, but that is about it.

    • I thought “IF there was a new military branch, that is likely what this was referencing AND there IS a new military branch, Space Force (and Trump created it, so 2020 fit)” so that was what I guessed.
