Warning: This page contains spoilers for the May 15, 2024, second game of Jeopardy! Masters — please do not scroll down if you wish to avoid being spoiled. It will be updated alongside the Eastern Time airing of the show, beginning at about 8:30 PM Eastern.

This game’s Jeopardy! Masters contestants:

Mattea Roach, a writer & podcast host from Toronto, Ontario, Canada (26-15, 5 points)
Mattea Roach in Jeopardy! Masters Season 2
Amy Schneider, a writer from Oakland, California (48-17, 5 points)
Amy Schneider in Jeopardy! Masters Season 2
Victoria Groce, a writer & television personality from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (9-3, 13 points)
Victoria Groce in Jeopardy! Masters Season 2

Andy’s Pre-Game Thoughts:

This half of the episode is the important one: while Victoria Groce has already clinched her spot in the semifinals, both Amy Schneider and Mattea Roach have decidedly not. Both tied on 5 points right now, whoever finishes this game with the higher score advances to the semifinals, with the other player eliminated from the event.

As a “sneak peek” and view of what the show’s lockout system looks like, Jeopardy! has uploaded the first five clues from the “lockout view” to its YouTube channel!

As someone who has the Complete Works of Edgar Allan Poe on her Kindle, I got this as soon as my brain fully parsed the clue. I’m sorry and a bit surprised that this was a triple miss, though. Especially since Victoria and Amy both knew Poe (probably because of the year in the clue).

  2. You mean to tell me that it’s possible to have a triple-zero-wager game without Mira Hayward?

    Who coulda thunk it? 🙂

  3. As much as Victoria has impressed me throughout the JIT and the Masters, her inability to finish the drill with FJs in the six games so far has me a bit worried. It’s kind of surprising that she’s only 2-for-6 so far, and this FJ must have really flummoxed her since she forgot to say hi to Nora.

For me, this feels like a “she can’t keep getting away with it, can she” kind of deal. I don’t know which of Yogesh or James will take advantage — Amy seems to be out of her league against Victoria comparatively — but it feels like the proverbial gun on the mantel.

    Oh well. Onto the semis!

  4. Matchups for Friday are posted. As I predicted based on last year, Amy sits out Game 1 on Friday, and James does so in Game 2.

I expect Yogesh to have the bye in the early game on Monday, and Victoria in the nightcap. (That is, the players will be idle in reverse order of the quarterfinal standings.)

    • I think you’re correct on this assumption Matt. 🙂

    • I wonder what the rationale is behind this. It seems Victoria has earned the rights to “last at-bat”. I would have given byes in the order: Victoria, Yogesh, James, Amy.

      • The fourth-place player sits out the first semifinal, then the third-place player sits out the second semifinal, and so on.

      • The rationale is basically the opposite: because the top player in the quarters is generally seen as the most likely to have already qualified for the semis, it makes sense for suspense’s sake to have 2-3-4 play off for what amounts to the last spot in the finals at the end.

        • Thanks, that makes sense. A dead-rubber game 4 would be a pretty terrible outcome.

I still think Victoria (or whoever finishes first) deserves some advantage for her quarterfinals performance. I also think it’s kind of clunky to have four games just to pare four contestants down the three. I’m wondering if it would be better tournament design to give first place a bye directly into the final, and have second, third and fourth play a two-game total point round for the last two spots in the final.

The drawback (for me at least) is that it makes one fewer Masters episode.

  5. I went with what Victoria did and guessed “The Tell Tale Heart.” I was close in the it was Poe and I was just spit balling. 🙂

Retro congrats to Amy on moving on to the Semis. Mattea is one of my faves and sorry to see Mattea go.

I think I’ve at least skimmed one, or,of Poe’s works. But what little of that I retained didn’t help me with this FInal Jeopardy. I didn’t even recognize the quote as being from one of Poe’s works.

    • I didn’t recognize it either, but I assumed Poe because Final Jeopardy! rarely goes very deep in a category and Poe is about the most famous short story writer of that time period. [For a bit broader period (as 1842 is too early) Mark Twain is pretty well known for short stories, but more so for books, whereas Poe is maybe more known for poems.] But this just sounded more like Poe. However, I did not expect to be able to think of what story it would be, so didn’t even try. I should have tried because though I did not like that story, its title has been an ear-worm before.

Not entirely logical, but Poe makes me think of ravens (animals) and “crept” made me think of animals [rather than inanimate objects], so I suppose that is why I did not believe I would be able to think of an apt story/title.

  7. Congrats to Victoria, Yogesh, James, and Amy for making it to the semis! So sorry to Matt and Mattea for being eliminated so early this time around. 🥺
