This game’s Jeopardy! Masters contestants:
Amy Schneider, a writer from Oakland, California (48-20, 0 points)![]() |
Yogesh Raut, a cognitive & behavioral scientist from Vancouver, Washington (12-8, 4 points)![]() |
James Holzhauer, the self-described “final boss” of Jeopardy! from Las Vegas, Nevada (49-10, 4 points)![]() |
Andy’s Pre-Game Thoughts:
The final semifinal will see #1 seed Victoria Groce sit out while James Holzhauer, Yogesh Raut, and Amy Schneider play. If the first semifinal sees James win with Victoria in second, this semifinal would be a dead rubber. The situation will become much more clearer once the opening game tonight finishes.

Thrice coming up big again!
This final is going to be amazing. I couldn’t even begin to pick the winner.
I’m excited as it’s a 2 game point total affair. James is the only one with experience on playing in this format so that may give James the slightest of advantages. Whoever has the best luck hunting down daily doubles will likely take the finals but what I love is you just never know.
Why was Amy in a chair?
She wanted to be in a chair. The show will accommodate any contestant who does ask to sit.
Amy, Matt, and, Mattea, all played well. But ran into the ripple buzzsaw of James, Victoria, and, Yogesh.
The Finals will be interesting with the three powerhouses battling each other.
This final is going to be crazy to watch. It’s going to come down to knowledge of the material, being quickest on the buzzer, and who can find those daily doubles and when they find them. This truly is a pick’em
This tournanent was 2 tiers with Victoria, Yogesh and James in the top tier. I am sure that many were surprised how good Victoria and Yogesh were.
A couple of questions for you to possibly address in tomorrow’s Masters Breakdown:
Entering the semifinals, what was the prediction model’s estimate of Amy not obtaining a point?
It having been the case that the model gave Amy a better chance of both advancing and winning the whole tournament than Yogesh, what changes, if any, would you consider introducing?
The Amy over Yogesh jumped out to me after the quarterfinals, as did the favoring of James; but I withheld judgment, given the backdrop of Ike Barinholtz’s Tournament of Champions performance. But it has since occurred to me whether some sort of time-weighting of performances might be valuable.
What interesting food for thought. I wonder what the stats are for the timing and duration of the “peaking” of top players, as well.
I wondered about whether (in these types of tournament games) incorporating head to head data would be practical.
Matt – do you happen to have any head to head (win / loss) stats. It may not be so easy given 3 players not a competition of 2.
I wondered about whether head to head results could be incorporated in the prediction model for tournament type games.
Matt – do you happen to have any stats on head to head results? I know it is not as easy with 3 competitors as opposed to just 2.
Fierce fight tonight between James and Yogesh.
Wednesday will be epic between James, Yogesh, and Victoria. The 2 times these 3 have matched up in a game, Yogesh won both. This being a 2 game total point affair makes it a true mystery as to who will win.
Bring on Wednesday at 8 p.m. Pacific!
I like the total points carryover format better than the first to win three games. Short and sweet
I would love to see these three fight it out in a first-to-three, but the need for a fixed predetermined number of episodes probably precludes that format.
I’d like to see a combo of first to 3 (or 2) with the 2-game carryover format. And the prediction model details.
Considering the number of people annoyed about knowing how long the series was going to go with GOAT in 2020 specifically based on ABC having to schedule a supposedly indeterminate number of games…such a system would be completely unworkable.
Whichever format you have to use, is fine with me. Love these Masters Matches!!! Happy for whomever comes out ahead. Looking forward to Wednesday.
