Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category The Theater) for Monday, May 20, 2024 (Season 40, Game 181):

Of the 14 roles in a production of this play that opened on Broadway on Oct. 28, 2004, none were played by females

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:

Ivvone Zhou, a student from Bethesda, Maryland
Ivvone Zhou on Jeopardy!
Gregg Meller, a filmmaker from Los Angeles, California
Gregg Meller on Jeopardy!
Grant DeYoung, a grocery clerk from Prescott, Arizona (3-day total: $67,202)
Grant DeYoung on Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

A new week begins on Jeopardy! with Grant DeYoung entering this game as a 3-day champion with winnings of $67,202. Gregg Meller and Ivvone Zhou are your challengers. Grant has certainly been playing well, averaging 24 correct (including Final) over his first three wins. However, the last three 3-day champions have failed to win their fourth game. Will this “mini-curse” continue, or will Grant break through to get victory number four?

It should also be noted that the last two semifinal games of 2024’s Jeopardy! Masters competition will be airing at 8:00 PM (7:00 Central) tonight on ABC and CTV2—for 60% of U.S. households, this is a different station than the normal “syndicated” games.

I have an occasional mailbag column where I answer fan & viewer questions regarding the show. If you have a question, feel free to send it to mailbag@thejeopardyfan.com!

Before it was the famed 1957 Sidney Lumet film, Twelve Angry Men was a television play, and then a stage play, written by Reginald Rose. While it is often renamed to things like Twelve Angry Jurors or Twelve Angry People when women are cast, the full cast of 14 in the 2004 Broadway revival (which was nominated for 3 Tony Awards) was entirely male.

Game Recap & Tonight’s Game Stats:

Looking to find out who won Jeopardy! today? Here’s the Monday, May 20, 2024 Jeopardy! by the numbers, along with a recap:

Jeopardy! Round:

(Categories: I’m Getting Doja Vu; Kids’ Lit; The Grouper Chat; Words That Should Rhyme; Sandwich Potpourri; Garfield On Garfield)

Gregg had an early lead in this one, thanks to an early Daily Double and six correct responses. At the interviews, Gregg had $4,600 to Grant’s $2,600 and Ivvone’s $1,600.

Statistics at the first break (15 clues):

Gregg 6 correct 1 incorrect
Grant 5 correct 2 incorrect
Ivvone 2 correct 0 incorrect

Today’s interviews:

Ivvone hosted a game of Taskmaster for her friends.
Gregg has an undergraduate degree in rocket science.
Grant finds being tall helpful as grocery clerk.

Grant struggled with three incorrect responses in the second segment; he’ll get to pick first in Double Jeopardy. Gregg held his lead while Ivvone moved up to second place.

Statistics after the Jeopardy round:

Gregg 9 correct 2 incorrect
Ivvone 5 correct 0 incorrect
Grant 9 correct 5 incorrect

Ivvone $3,000
Grant $2,600

Double Jeopardy! Round:

(Categories: Turkmenistan; Dino Movies; Saints; “Come” & “Go”; Deep Space Night; It’s A Date)

Double Jeopardy was very interesting! Both Daily Doubles were at the $800 level, and Gregg found them on back-to-back clues. Unfortunately, he bet small on the one he got correct and big on the one he got incorrect. That meant that, despite 11 incorrect over the course of both of the first two rounds, Grant held a lead going into Final Jeopardy.

Statistics after Double Jeopardy:

Grant 18 correct 11 incorrect
Ivvone 11 correct 2 incorrect
Gregg 16 correct 4 incorrect
Total number of unplayed clues this season: 18 (2 today).

Scores going into Final:

Grant $8,200
Ivvone $7,000
Gregg $6,800

Grant and Ivvone were both correct in Final Jeopardy; Grant bet enough and is now a 4-time champion!

Tonight’s results:

Gregg $6,800 – $6,800 = $0 (What is The Spama)
Ivvone $7,000 + $7,000 = $14,000 (What is 12 Angry Men)
Grant $8,200 + $5,801 = $14,001 (What is 12 angry men?) (4-day total: $81,203)

Grant DeYoung, today's Jeopardy! winner (for the May 20, 2024 game.)

Andy’s Thoughts:

  • In case this is unclear to anybody: if you win a game of Jeopardy!, you are allowed to be joyful and happy. That is all.
  • Grant is the first player with at least 10 incorrect responses to still win a game since Ryan Fenster on January 31, 2018. He’s also the first known player to win a game with 11 incorrect since Jack Lechner on December 1, 1988 (Jack’s was 10 in the main game + a miss in Final), and the first known player to win a game with at least 11 incorrect over the first two rounds since Steve Rogitz in March 26, 1985 (Steve holds the record for a win, with 12 in the main game + a miss in Final for 13).
  • Today’s box score will be linked to when posted by the show.

Final Jeopardy! wagering suggestions:

(Scores: Grant $8,200 Ivvone $7,000 Gregg $6,800)

Grant: Standard cover bet over Ivvone is $5,801. (Actual bet: $5,801)

Gregg: Bet no more than $4,399 and stay ahead of Grant if he misses Final Jeopardy. (Actual bet: $6,800)

Ivvone: You can’t both cover Gregg and win a Triple Stumper. You should either go all in to force a cover bet from Grant, or bet $199 or less and play for the Triple Stumper. (Actual bet: $7,000)

10 Comments on "Today’s Final Jeopardy – Monday, May 20, 2024"

  1. I had no idea. I guessed “What is ‘Rent’?” just to say something, even though I knew that couldn’t be right.

    • I guessed Rent, too. At least I’m in good company with my incorrect response. I did not know 12 Angry Men had been a play on Broadway.

  2. It looks like they all struggled today. Some days are like that. As Alex often said, “It’s all about the categories.” But congrats to Grant, now a four-day winner, one win away from next year’s TOC.

  3. Andy – thank you for your after-game thoughts because I was definitely wondering if 11 incorrect answers was a record for number of misses and still winning a game. I enjoyed reading all the historical facts.

  4. Robert J. Fawkes | May 20, 2024 at 4:37 pm |

Congratulations to Grant on his fourth victory. Thanks, also, to Grant for making me look good on my early prediction that he would be the one to break the 4th-game mini curse. He did it, yeah! Big victory for Grant, small victory for me. 🙂

  5. Bill Vollmer | May 20, 2024 at 5:29 pm |

Maybe if I hadn’t let myselfnot feeling defeated when the category was announced, and, thought about the Final Jeopardy “answer” (clue,” I might have come up with 12 angry Men, if I focused on the 14 roles, instead of Broadway, ’04. Since 12 Angry Men as been a film, a TV drama special, as well as a stage. (The first TV drama special I heard of)
But I did allow myself to feel defeateed before the answer (was) revealed, so I lost before I began.

  6. It looks like it was bad timing for Gregg when to go for it and when to play it safe on the Daily Doubles. He could’ve had a runaway if things worked out differently.

  7. Mary Fairchild | May 20, 2024 at 9:35 pm |

I cannot locate Jeopardy Sweepstakes.com to enter Iceland sweepstakes. Help

  8. I went with “The Producers.” As a side note, the 1957 film 12 Angry Men is one of my favorite movies ever!

Retro congrats to Grant on win #4. See what happens in Game #5 tomorrow night. 🙂
