Andy’s Pre-Game Thoughts:

Match Day 3 of Jeopardy! Masters 2024 begins with a match between Yogesh Raut, Matt Amodio, and Amy Schneider. While Matt is favored slightly to take this matchup, one number that I found very interesting when I ran the predictions for the most recent “Masters Breakdown” was that Matt was the least likely to finish second. To me, that makes sense—Matt’s performances are very mercurial and Daily Double-dependent. Meanwhile, while I wouldn’t call this a “must-win” game for Amy, I would call it a “must-point” game for Amy. A point here—especially if Yogesh wins and keeps Matt in third—would very likely move Amy up to 5th in the standings by the end of today’s episode. Yogesh is in a good position already after his win on Opening Day; a win here would be excellent for his advancement chances.

Andy’s Thoughts:

  • Reminder that the judges made the correct call on the “trapezium” clue; depending on where one is located, what many might know as a “trapezoid” is a “trapezium”, and vice versa. This is also a reminder that this is a fact, and that facts are not a matter of opinion or debate. Further debate on this point will not be permitted, as per the Site Comment Policy.
  • Today’s box score will be linked to when posted by the show.

Matt: Bet at least 2,800 for a chance at second. (Actual bet: 7,200)

5 Comments on "Jeopardy! Masters Recap – Wednesday, May 8, 2024 (Game 1)"

  1. I wish Ken would refrain from the in-clue comments like “they’re narrowing it down for you” on the Sparta clue. It seemed like almost a giveaway in this case.

    • That was interesting, but alas Amy still didn’t know it.

    • I see no problem with the comment. It is more a “Thank you, Captain Obvious” situation than an extra clue and I feel the official number of seconds allowed for a third contestant to choose to buzz in (or not) would be boring without a comment.

Theater is not something I’m strong in. Naturally, I know of Gilbert and Sullivan. Might even recognize some of the songs from their productions.
But questions on history of theater prove how little I know 0 for Masters Final Jeopardy.

Since both trapezoid and trapezium can have 2 different meanings, I think that this clue/question pair should not have been used.
