Warning: This page contains spoilers for the May 8, 2024, second game of Jeopardy! Masters — please do not scroll down if you wish to avoid being spoiled. It will be updated alongside the Eastern Time airing of the show, beginning at about 8:30 PM Eastern.

This game’s Jeopardy! Masters contestants:

Mattea Roach, a writer & podcast host from Toronto, Ontario, Canada (25-13, 1 point)
Mattea Roach in Jeopardy! Masters Season 2
James Holzhauer, the self-described “final boss” of Jeopardy! from Las Vegas, Nevada (47-6, 4 points)
James Holzhauer in Jeopardy! Masters Season 2
Victoria Groce, a writer & television personality from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (7-2, 6 points)
Victoria Groce in Jeopardy! Masters Season 2

Andy’s Pre-Game Thoughts:

Match Day 3 concludes with a match between Victoria Groce, James Holzhauer, and Mattea Roach. Victoria (with the homophonic last name to our current regular-play champion) has dominated the buzzer and the games in piling up two victories. There have been a couple of concerns about her being 0-for-2 in Final Jeopardy—but Clue #61 doesn’t matter if your lead is insurmountable. Speaking of insurmountable, if the results in Game 1 (and thus the pairings for Friday) break the right way, Victoria could mathematically clinch a spot in the semifinals with a win in this match. Mattea is going to need to find their buzzer timing, and that will be immensely difficult against two of the strongest buzzer players ever in Victoria and James.

Final Jeopardy! wagering suggestions:

(Scores: Victoria 29,600 James 17,600 Mattea 7,000)

Victoria: Standard cover bet over James is 5,601. (Actual bet: 5,601)

James: If Victoria is incorrect and bets to cover, she falls to 23,999. Thus, you should bet at least 6,400. I would limit my bet in this situation to 10,599, as that forces Mattea to be correct to pass you. (Actual bet: 6,400)

Mattea: You’re probably going to be in a position where James has to be incorrect and you correct to take a match point. Thus, you might as well go all in. (Actual bet: 7,000)

10 Comments on "Jeopardy! Masters Recap – Wednesday, May 8, 2024 (Game 2)"

  1. Pulled out this one, remembering Orson Welles quote in Man for All Seasons

  2. Weirdly enough, I feel like tonight is a big confidence booster for James… I suppose we’ll just have to see!

    • “Moral victory”?

    • Though I was inordinately proud of myself for giving the correct response (of ‘regulator’) BEFORE James’ incorrect response (of ‘respirator’, I think he said) for the SCUBA-related DD he’d gone all in on. [I’ve never dived nor even personally known anyone who did.]

  3. Will Morris | May 8, 2024 at 9:42 pm |

Well. Victoria’s definitely moving on – it would take two of Mattea, Amy, and Matt to both win all three games, and given if any two of them both win Friday, they’ll play Monday, that cannot happen.

  4. James got the draw into the late game on Friday; that’ll be one heck of a battle. Indeed, based on the first three matchdays, it’s a likely preview of the final. So the early matchup will definitively break the tie for fourth, at least going into the weekend.

Friday’s play will also be interesting to note how players have recovered and/or adjusted overnight, between the two quarterfinal tape days.

    • Going to be some great Jeopardy to watch on Friday, that’s for sure. Thank you for the info Matt. It wasn’t up on the Jeopardy site when I had last checked.

  5. Retro congrats on the win by Victoria! She’s such a strong player! I had no idea on FJ.

  6. Bill Vollmer | May 9, 2024 at 4:07 pm |

It APPEARS that the three who will battle for the $500,000 are James, Victoria, and, Yogesh. Obviously one of the others could possibly pass James, or, Yogesh. But would need some strong wins to do so.
Final Jeopardy. I thought “Who was Thomas A-Becket?” just from the quote in the “answer” (clue.) Wasn’t surprised that my response wasn’t correct. I wasn’t even sure if I was in the same general Era. I believed I remembered that Becket was a priest.
But that was an impression. My knowledge of British history is not something to be proud of.

    • At least you had the right country! What popped into my head was Thomas Aquinas and it turns out he was Italian 🫢. [I suspect I had him mixed up with your guy.]
