Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Countries) for Wednesday, November 6, 2024 (Season 41, Game 43):
This country has the most time zones in the world, including its territories in South America & off the coast of Africa
(correct response beneath the contestants)
Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:
Adrienne Clermont, an ER doctor originally from Ithaca, New York![]() |
Derek Hieronymus, a sales director from Hutto, Texas![]() |
Greg Jolin, a system specialist & accountant from Raymond, New Hampshire (4-day total: $110,402)![]() |
Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:
In a game that many of you may have missed yesterday, Greg Jolin picked up another 27 correct responses over the first two rounds in a very decisive victory worth over $35,000 to him. Yesterday, he became the 463rd player to win at least 4 games of regular Jeopardy! play. Today, Derek Hieronymous and Adrienne Clermont are going to try to stop Greg from becoming the 281st player to win at least 5.
Am I worried about the future of Jeopardy! this morning? No. For my reasoning as to why, I would like to quote Juvenal’s Satire X: “…for the People who once upon a time handed out military command, high civil office, legions — everything, now restrains itself and anxiously hopes for just two things: bread and circuses.” And I believe that Jeopardy! is too important to the collective entertainment of America for it not to continue. And, as long as it continues, people will miss some of it and want to know what happened.

As a result of its numerous overseas territories, including French Polynesia, French Guiana, Saint Pierre and Miquelon, and Réunion, France has 12 different time zones. Curiously, when one travels west from the Burin Peninsula of Newfoundland to Saint Pierre and Miquelon, one must set their clock forward 30 minutes (instead of back, which is what one might expect when traveling westward across a time zone boundary). Russia and the United States both span 11 different time zones.
Today seems like another relatively straightforward Final Jeopardy clue—especially when one considers the clues of “territories in South America & off the coast of Africa”. The fact that French Guiana is still a French territory has been a commonly asked fact over the years on the show, and remembering that should make for an easy path to the correct response.

Jeopardy! Round:
(Categories: Friends Of John Brown; The TV Show In Question; Directions To The Landmark; My Cherry Amour; Also Found In The Bathroom; Compound Words)
Although he had a couple of incorrect responses, and a minor clue selection misstep, going to the first row for the first time in his run, Greg still led at the first commercial. At the round’s midpoint, he had $3,800 to Derek’s $3,000 and Adrienne’s $1,000.
Statistics at the first break (15 clues):
Greg 7 correct 2 incorrect
Derek 5 correct 0 incorrect
Adrienne 2 correct 0 incorrect
Today’s interviews:
Adrienne thinks her parents wanted a boy as her names as male names feminized.
Derek set his microwave on fire while trying to cook macaroni & cheese without water.
Greg chickened out of his marriage proposal the first time.
Derek took the lead briefly, but a missed Daily Double left him in second place after 30 clues.
Statistics after the Jeopardy round:
Greg 12 correct 3 incorrect
Derek 11 correct 2 incorrect
Adrienne 4 correct 0 incorrect
Scores after the Jeopardy! Round:

Double Jeopardy! Round:
(Categories: You Have A Serious Beatitude; Shades Of Blue; Ordinal Phrases; World War II Fiction; All The Light We Can See; Catch, 22)
A few days ago, I said that Greg was better at Jeopardy than most of his challengers were. That was incredibly evident in this round. Both Derek and Adrienne did not go all-in on Daily Doubles, when having done so would have likely prevented Greg from taking a guess on the last clue of Double Jeopardy. As it was, Greg’s correct $2,000 guess on the round’s final clue cemented a runaway game by $200 going into Final.
Statistics after Double Jeopardy:
Greg 28 correct 3 incorrect
Adrienne 11 correct 0 incorrect
Derek 16 correct 2 incorrect
Total number of unplayed clues this season: 5 (0 today).
Scores going into Final:
Greg $24,600
Adrienne $12,200
Derek $10,600
Everyone got Final Jeopardy correct; Greg is now a 5-time champion! He’ll go for win #6 tomorrow.
Tonight’s results:
Derek $10,600 + $1,601 = $12,201 (What is France?)
Adrienne $12,200 + $9,001 = $21,201 (What is France?)
Greg $24,600 + $0 = $24,600 (What is France) (5-day total: $135,002)

Andy’s Thoughts:
- With how he’s been playing overall, I think we have to call Greg the favorite for the upcoming Tournament of Champions.
- As a strategy idea, especially as it relates to Derek’s bet on the first Daily Double in this game, I think it puts you into a negative frame of mind if you bet to fall to a round number if you’re incorrect. Bet for a number if you’re right instead!
- Today’s box score will be linked to when posted by the show.
Final Jeopardy! wagering suggestions:
(Scores: Greg $24,600 Adrienne $12,200 Derek $10,600)
Greg: Bet no more than $199 and enjoy your fifth win! (Actual bet: $0)
Derek: Bet between $3,201 and $7,399 and hope for an incorrect response from Adrienne. (Actual bet: $1,601)
Adrienne: Standard cover bet over Derek is $9,001. (Actual bet: $9,001)

Went just from the South America clue and got it pretty easily. 3/3 so far this week!
I’m sorry that I don’t have more to say. Yesterday and today have been a lot. I know I’ll get through it… but it’s still a lot.
Ditto.
Been awhile since I’ve got a back to back final jeopardy right. The clue for me is “territory in South America”
For some reason Portugal came to mind ahead of France, but of course France has more possessions in the modern world.
I did, too, but I know why I did. I am not familiar with all places that are still territories, but felt like during colonialism Portugal had A LOT of territories, so thought maybe a lot might remain. One reason for not considering France was because I did not realize that French Polynesia is STILL a territory. I assumed it was just still “called” that (whether named that or not).
[Overall, just showing my world geography and world history ignorance, but being honest while letting you know that you were not the only one to whom Portugal “popped”.]
I guessed France since I know there are French speaking countries in Africa, and I’ve been to Saint Martin/Sint Maarten, the smallest body of land under two nations, so I figured it as a decent guess. Another piece of trivia – the flight from Sint Maarten to Anguilla is the shortest regularly scheduled international flight (10 miles).
I was not thinking about territories of countries, just consecutive time zones. So of course I went with Russia. BUT today’s clue also includes territories!!! Forgive me, I just woke up here in California…
Choosing between the UK and France, I went with France because of South America.
I’m sort of a freelance trivia question writer. About a year ago, I wrote a nearly identical question, so this was an immediate get for me.
In the past, I might have gone with the United Kingdom but they’ve lost so many former possessions, I looked for another colonial power. Because of French Guiana, I landed on France as my final response.
I can agree with your comment about Greg being the favorite for the upcoming ToC, though I think the margins between him and Isaac Hirsch are so slim that you could really consider either of them the favorite and you’d be justified both ways.
Either way, though, I’m very happy to see Greg doing so well. And not just because he, like me, is from New Hampshire – though that is a big reason – but he’s probably one of the strongest players (both knowledge- and strategy-wise) that the show has seen since the return to regular play, and it’s always very, VERY satisfying to see strategic study pay off!
I can agree with Andy’s and your comment about Greg being the favorite for the upcoming ToC, but only if he loses before the ToC!
This show aired for me on Thursday. I finally got FJ right again. 1 for 3 for the week and 6 for 43 for the season.
Nice to see Greg get his 5th win and ToC status after I left taping on September 23rd.
