Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category 1960s Inventions) for Thursday, November 7, 2024 (Season 41, Game 44):
Poly-paraphenylene terephthalamide was 1st invented to re-inforce radial tires but the lifesaving polymer aka this would have many uses
(correct response beneath the contestants)
Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:
Sammy Sanchez, a bartender & private tutor from Kansas City, Missouri![]() |
Susan Stumme, a journalist from Arlington, Virginia![]() |
Greg Jolin, a system specialist & accountant from Raymond, New Hampshire (5-day total: $135,002)![]() |
Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:
Greg Jolin is now a 5-time Jeopardy! champion; today, he goes for win #6 against Susan Stumme and Sammy Sanchez. I said in my recap yesterday that Greg could be considered the favorite for the upcoming Tournament of Champions. I stand by those remarks—while players like Isaac Hirsch are also strong, the stats do note that Isaac did struggle to make gains with the Daily Doubles during his run. It’ll be interesting to see how things play out in a few months, though!

The DuPont-invented polymer best known today as Kevlar was originally first used as a replacement for steel in radial racing tyres due to its weight-saving properties. However, it was soon realized that the material had the ability to significantly slow the travel of bullets, and the material got its best-known use soon thereafter—bulletproof vests.
I think the thing that I find most interesting about today’s Final Jeopardy clue is its length. It appears as though the show has been able to increase its length limit of clues, likely to finally feeling comfortable, over 15 years after the transition to HD, to use the full HD width of a screen to present clues.

winning streak continues: three. never managed to get past two. I would say it’s a good week 🙂
Four in a row for me! Perfect so far this entire week! I’m not going to hold my breath for tomorrow though.
I guessed kevlar, though I didn’t know it had many uses – I just think of bullet proof vests.
I wonder how he stacks up against Adriana if she optimizes her gameplay between now and the TOC. Excited to find out!
I tuned in to watch Wednesday’s Jeopardy! only to find that I was watching the Tuesday episode instead—the election day broadcast!!! What a bummer. So tonight, I may be watching the Wednesday game instead of tonight’s game.
So I am happy to see that we have a 5 day champ, who leaves today…
My first thought was nylon, but I realized that it was invented earlier than the 1960s, and Kevlar came to mind after a short time.
Seeing the proper chenical name for Kevlar got me focusing on that, instead of the key part of the clue; “life saving.” Maybe if I had focused on that, I might have comeup with the correct response. But then that old saying about “If wishes were horses..” comes to mind.
For those seeing games a day later than their intended air date, at least you’ll be seeing Wednesday’s game. For those of us who watch Jeopardy late afternoons, like in Chicago, network affilates probably preempted Jeopardyfor Vice President Harris’s concession speech, address to her supporters.
I did find yesterday’s Final Jeopardy here, but got it wrong because I didn’t know that France had so many “dependacies” around South America.
For me, “Lifesaving” was the key to narrowing this down to Kevlar. Although, styrofoam, WD-40 and other inventions may have many uses, Kevlar was the one that stood out as having lifesaving properties. Not sure what, if any, lifesaving uses there might be for styrofoam or WD-40.
Well, for Styrofoam perhaps life vests or life preservers? I took “lifesaving” to be even more literal, i.e., medical, and guessed Teflon — thinking maybe for the surface of stents or artificial heart valves or some such. I had no idea it was invented [more like discovered] decades before the 60s (which is about the time it hit the airwaves in commercials for non-stick pans).
This episode aired on Friday for me and I missed FJ and don’t even remember my guess right now. 1 for 4 for the week and 6 for 44 for the Season.
Sad to see Greg’s run end at 5, but am definitely looking forward to seeing him in the ToC.
