Today’s Final Jeopardy – Thursday, December 19, 2024

Warning: This page contains spoilers for the December 19, 2024, game of Jeopardy! — please do not scroll down if you wish to avoid being spoiled. Please note that the game airs as early as noon Eastern in some U.S. television markets.

Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Super Bowl History) for Thursday, December 19, 2024 (Season 41, Game 74):

It’s the only team to play in the Super Bowl before Neil Armstrong’s moon walk that has not been back to the Big Game since

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:

Laura Faddah, a manager from Memphis, Tennessee
Laura Faddah on Jeopardy!
Neal Bowling, a journeyman lineman from Mackinaw, Illinois
Neal Bowling on Jeopardy!
Eric Weldon-Schilling, a bar manager & sommelier from Houston, Texas (1-day total: $21,000)
Eric Weldon-Schilling on Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

Eric Weldon-Schilling is your new champion; he defeated a four-time champion in Ashley Chan in yesterday’s battle. Today, he faces off against Neal Bowling and Laura Faddah. I’m sure that Neal will pick up some sort of press in the next 24-48 hours over his moustache, while I suspect that viewers of a certain age are likely to get a certain Allan Sherman song from the 1960s stuck in their head.

In other Jeopardy! news, the field of 27 for the upcoming season of Celebrity Jeopardy! was revealed. Play begins on ABC at 9 PM Eastern on Wednesday, January 8—as Wednesdays get even busier this winter for fans of the show, especially as Pop Culture Jeopardy will be in full swing with its 3 episodes a week dropping on Wednesdays.

In January 1969—six months and eight days before Neil Armstrong walked on the moon—the New York Jets and Baltimore Colts played in Super Bowl III. After famously guaranteeing victory in the lead-up to the game, Joe Namath led the Jets to a 16-7 victory. Since that victory, the Jets have yet to return to the Super Bowl, and I’m sure that many Jets fans—many of whom are also diehard Jeopardy! fans—will be absolutely thrilled to be reminded of this fact tonight.

Sports categories in Final often see players take the category more into account when setting their wagering sizes—often to the more conservative side. It’ll be interesting to see what happens today.

Neal picked up $3,000 on DD2, and things got very interesting, with the last Daily Double staying out very late. Eric found it and pulled himself back into contention with an excellent wager on DD3, and all three players had a chance at the lead going into the final clue of the round. Laura got it—on a rebound from Neal—to lead going into the 61st clue.

Statistics after Double Jeopardy:

Laura 15 correct 0 incorrect
Eric 14 correct 5 incorrect
Neal 14 correct 4 incorrect
Total number of unplayed clues this season: 17 (0 today).

Scores going into Final:

Laura $13,600
Eric $10,000
Neal $9,800

This Final Jeopardy turned out to be a Triple Stumper. With the way the bets came down, Laura would have won anyway with a cover bet, but she bet just $2,400 and ended up with a shade over $10,000 in victory. She’ll return tomorrow to defend.

Tonight’s results:

Neal $9,800 – $7,000 = $2,800 (What is the Cleveland Browns?)
Eric $10,000 – $10,000 = $0 (What is giants?)
Laura $13,600 – $2,400 = $11,200 (What is Houston?) (1-day total: $11,200)

Final Jeopardy! wagering suggestions:

(Scores: Laura $13,600 Eric $10,000 Neal $9,800)

Eric: Being that you both can’t cover Neal and win a Triple Stumper, you might as well go all in here. (Actual bet: $10,000)

Neal: If Laura bets to cover Eric and is incorrect, she falls to $7,199. Bet no more than $2,600 to hope for a cover bet and a Triple Stumper. (Actual bet: $7,000)

Laura: Standard cover bet over Neal is $6,401. If you’d rather hope for a Triple Stumper, bet no more than $3,599. (Actual bet: $2,400)

21 Comments on "Today’s Final Jeopardy – Thursday, December 19, 2024"

  1. Took a second, but remembering Joe Namath’s guarantee got me there.

  2. This should be a fairly easy FJ for anyone old enough to remember Super Bowl III. The main reason the Jets’ victory surprised so many people is that, back then, the Colts were the NFL champs and the Jets were the AFL champs, and the NFL was generally considered to be the superior league.

    • My only pause (which was short), was questioning if it was the ’69 season (and then would’ve been the Super Bowl in 1970).

  3. I was not aware of the Super Bowl until SB #16 when the 49ers won their first one. But so much trivia concerning all of the Super Bowls, I would not have known this detail for the correct response.

  4. Today’s question is a “stand and stare” for me. I’ve decided to go through November games and see what are my statistics. Out of 21 November FJs, I was able to answer 8 correctly (via knowledge or a lucky guess); I understood the clue and the response of 8 others, and in most of those cases I could have given a correct response if I was thinking more clearly or creatively; and I sat and stared for the remaining 5.

  5. J-E-T-S Just End The Season!

    • I’m sure Mike Greenberg, plus many others feel the same way. Bears fans, of which I’m one, have the development of Caleb Williams to look forwrd to the rest of this season.

    • Former Jeopardy! host Aaron Rodgers is now quarterbacking the Jets, so this is the team that Jeopardy! fans should be rooting for!!

  6. Forgot about the team that kept the AFL whole adter the merger.

I must of misunderstood the last question of the “main game” like Neal, because when I heard/read it, sure felt like it was calling for the “gods” of war, not wisdom.

  7. As a huge Packer fan, I came up with Jets, but wasn’t 100% certain it was before the moon walk. I knew it wasn’t the Packers, Chiefs or Raiders.

As an avid sports fan and old enough to have seen every Super Bowl, I was all in as soon as I saw the category. Having witnessed Super Bowl III, it was easy enough to remember that it was the first Super Bowl win for the American Football League against the NFL champs. Personally, I think the fact that the Jets have never been back is because Namath made a pact with the devil to guarantee a win by foregoing the Jets ever winning another Super Bowl. Sorry Jets fans, that’s the Super Bowl curse for you guys but you did get that one. You can thank Joe Willie.

    • I used to think the same thing about the Cubs and the way they won the pennant (and World Series) in 1908. It took 108 years for the Johnny Evers “curse” to end, so maybe the Jets will win it again in 2077! As to the three-way miss – where’s Ryan Fenster when we need him? 🙂

  9. They could have said before the summer of 1986 instead of the moon walk and the answer would still have been the Jets. Unless there’s a technicality that the Colts were a different team after moving to Indy, though the same franchise. Dolphins haven’t been to SB since before 1986.

  10. I meant summer of 1984 with Miami in the next SB.

  11. Would just “Bartholomew” have been acceptable for the Bartholomew Cubbins question?

  12. I really have no interest in football (or any other ball sports), but being old enough to kind of remember the first Superbowl [my attention was caught by it being mocked beforehand by much of the media opining there was no way this was going to be of a lot of interest to people now, much less remain of interest for years] and being old enough that there was not that much news — like twice a day X 3 for network TV plus one daily newspaper — I was exposed to sports, too, as “news” was too precious to miss any of, and felt fairly confident about my “Who is the New York Jets?” (because a team is singular as a whole). Though I bet I have heard mention of this at least once, it was only my guess because it just felt like the Jets hadn’t been mentioned right around Superbowl time since the time of Joe Namath (who got attention outside football).
