Today’s Final Jeopardy – Wednesday, December 18, 2024

Warning: This page contains spoilers for the December 18, 2024, game of Jeopardy! — please do not scroll down if you wish to avoid being spoiled. Please note that the game airs as early as noon Eastern in some U.S. television markets.

This site also has recaps for today’s three Pop Culture Jeopardy episodes. If you’re looking for those recaps instead: Episode 7 (On The Bubble, Lower Shoulder, Space Cowboys); Episode 8 (Mission: Impopsicle, Set & A Run, Mojo Casa Housemates); Episode 9 (Brennith, Glazed and Confused, Tampa Tamales).

Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Anthems) for Wednesday, December 18, 2024 (Season 41, Game 73):

The unofficial anthem of this U.K. territory mentions kelp, penguins & “the wind from the Horn”

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:

Eric Weldon-Schilling, a bar manager & sommelier from Houston, Texas
Eric Weldon-Schilling on Jeopardy!
Sarah Rosenthal, a fundraiser from New York, New York
Sarah Rosenthal on Jeopardy!
Ashley Chan, a publicist from Lewisville, Texas (4-day total: $67,400)
Ashley Chan on Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

Ashley Chan has picked up four victories and nearly $70,000. Today, she will attempt to become the 282nd player since 1984 to become a five-time champion (182 have lost going for win #5). Her challengers, who always hope to end her streak, are New York’s Sarah Rosenthal and Houston’s Eric Weldon-Schilling.

There are a couple of interesting storylines to note coming into this one: firstly, Ashley’s unorthodox wagering—she’s won twice in a runaway and twice where she hasn’t made a cover bet in Final Jeopardy. As I’ve said all week: at this point, if Ashley’s leading and you’re in second, your bet needs to be an automatic all-in. Secondly, Eric has pretty much been advertising his appearance in nearly every discussion space for the show. This is quite unusual for a player to do so to this degree, to the point where I can’t tell whether it portends a good performance or if Eric is just really excited about being on the show.

“In my heart there’s a call for the isles far away / Where the wind from the Horn often wanders at play. / Where the kelp moves and swells to the wind and the tide / And penguins troop down from the lonely hillside.” Schoolteacher Christopher Lanham wrote “Song of the Falklands” while working on West Falkland in the 1930s.

  1. Penguins led me to southern hemisphere which led me to Falkland Islands (which I don’t think I’d ever heard of before that kerfuffle with Argentina).

  2. I’ve been in a coma since mid-1982, so I unfortunately didn’t realize it was still an English territory.

  3. Eric Weldon-Schilling | December 18, 2024 at 10:15 am |

I can confirm that Eric was just super excited about being on the show. It’s been a 25 year dream.

    Source: I am Eric.

  4. My immediate thought was for some reason Saint Helena, but I quickly realized that it is too far from the Horn, and guessed the Falklands.

  5. Somehow when the answer clue was revealed, I missed the mention of Kelp, and, Penguins,
which would have lead me from my response, Gilbrater. Soley based on the words “wind from the Horn.” And, yes, I realize that Gilbrater is far from the Horn. But I forgot all about th3 disputed territory of the Faklands. I’m on a losing streak, haven’t had a succesfull final Jeopardy is over a week.

  6. It will be nice to see the show again, after it being preempted by sports two nights in a row.

  7. Robert J. Fawkes | December 18, 2024 at 6:40 pm |

“”Oh, my stars how does MARS make such wonderful candy bars?” Does anyone else remember that jingle? My favorites are/were Snickers and Forever Yours. I know Snickers still exists but I haven’t seen Forever Yours in a long time. Good memories.

The dust up a few years ago helped me to get today’s final.

  8. In a before and after doesn’t the joining word have to be identical? If so, “spilled milk(y) way” would also be disqualified on that basis.

  9. Unlike Eric, who wagered optimistically to win an even amount ending in $000, why do so many contestants place wagers that would achieve a $000 result if they answered incorrectly? In other words, another contestant with Eric’s winnings of $19,600 would’ve pessimistically wagered $1,600 in FJ to fall to an even $18,000 rather than optimistically wagering $1,400?

    • I’m guessing that it is basically just a math thing, with the person leaning into what process is the easiest and surest for them (even when only a tiny bit different). However, I wonder if it is because in the future whenever someone asks them how much they won on Jeopardy (or is to be introduced as a person who won $$$$ on Jeopardy), they would rather say $18,000 rather than $18,400 or “about $18,000”.

  10. Would just “Bartholomew” have been acceptable for the Bartholomew Cubbins question?
