Today’s Final Jeopardy – Friday, January 24, 2025

Warning: This page contains spoilers for the January 24, 2025, game of Jeopardy! — please do not scroll down if you wish to avoid being spoiled. Please note that the game airs as early as 9:30 AM Eastern today in some U.S. television markets.

If you’re looking for the recap of the exhibition match from the 2025 Tournament of Champions between Adriana Harmeyer, Isaac Hirsch, and Drew Basile, that can be found here.

Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Composers) for Friday, January 24, 2025 (Season 41, Game 100):

“Troll Hill” is the name of his country home, the grounds of which include a concert hall & a lakeside cabin where he worked

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:

Mehal Shah, a software engineer from Seattle, Washington (Yesterday’s total: $27,200)
Mehal Shah on Jeopardy!
Drew Goins, a journalist from Honolulu, Hawaiʻi (Yesterday’s total: $17,600)
Drew Goins on Jeopardy!
Will Yancey, a lecturer of history from Banquete, Texas (Yesterday’s total: $5,600)
Will Yancey on Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

Good morning! I definitely have a few things to say on this Friday. Firstly, today sees the final game of Champions Wildcard, with Mehal Shah holding a good-sized lead over both Drew Goins and Will Yancey. However, it’s not insurmountable; due to the fact that anything earned in the main game can be doubled in Final Jeopardy, Mehal’s “effective lead” is just $4,800 over Drew and $10,800 over Will. Will is definitely going to need a very strong performance today, though, to get out of third place.

Secondly, Apparently Jeopardy! came up on Abby Phillip’s CNN show last night, with her commenting on the fact that Drew wasn’t given credit for adding an S on to her last name, saying it was “close enough”. To this, I say something similar to the quote I gave to the New York Times in 2016 regarding Coolio after the “Gangsta’s Paradise” ruling: Respectfully, I don’t think Abby Phillip is familiar with the intricacies of the rules of Jeopardy!.

Thirdly, the NFL strikes again! if you normally watch Jeopardy! on CBS, you’re dealing with the fallout today of the PGA Tour not wanting to go up against the NFL playoff games on Sunday. Because the Farmers Insurance Open from Torrey Pines in San Diego is being held Wednesday through Saturday instead of Thursday through Sunday, and CBS holds rights to broadcasting Rounds 3 & 4 of many PGA Tour events, there will be golf coverage on CBS between 5:00 and 8:00 PM Eastern this evening. (Moreover, the five Montana stations that air the show at 6:00 PM Mountain are choosing to air their local newscast after the golf.) If you’re affected, you can check your local listings, or you can check Matt Carberry’s Google sheet here. A couple of important notes: KLST San Angelo goes back into the “bad” pile, pre-empting the show entirely today after actually showing it on Monday, while WTSP Tampa Bay appears to be showing the show at 9:30 AM Eastern—which means today’s results will be going up two and a half hours earlier than they normally do.

If you are pre-empted, though, you can still get a Jeopardy! fix of a second game today, as can everyone! At 7:00 PM Eastern, TuneIn Radio will be airing the Tournament of Champions Exhibition Game between Adriana Harmeyer, Isaac Hirsch, and Drew Basile, the top 3 seeds who have been seeded into the Tournament of Champions semifinals, live on its Jeopardy! Radio channel. (If you’d prefer to stay here at this website, both the Jeopardy! Radio and Jeopardy Radio Classics channels on TuneIn are available to stream here at The Jeopardy! Fan as well.) Finally, if you missed the live airing of the game, the game is also available from TuneIn on demand.

Troll Hill, known as Troldhaugen in Norway, was the former home of famous Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg. Grieg’s most famous works are probably contained within the incidental music for Henrik Ibsen’s play Peer Gynt, which includes “In The Hall of the Mountain King” and “Morning Mood”. Troldhaugen is located in Bergen, Norway; the site is now the home of the Edvard Grieg Museum Troldhaugen, which was dedicated to the composer’s memory; the permanent exhibition of Grieg’s life and music was opened in 1995.

One potential incorrect response that I came up with, considering how this composer often liked to troll the classical music world: John Cage. (And, yes, I realize that he wouldn’t be a Final Jeopardy today after coming up during the Double Jeopardy round of yesterday’s game.)

Andy’s Thoughts:

  • Thanks to WTSP Tampa for airing today’s episode at 9:30 AM Eastern.
  • Normally I’d avoid giving wagering advice in a double-runaway situation such as this, but because the math is harder on Day 2 of a final, I will today.
  • Although he did not know this as the time, as the alternate, Drew is also headed to the Tournament of Champions as Lisa Ann Walter’s replacement.
  • Today’s box score will be linked to when posted by the show.

Final Jeopardy! wagering suggestions:

(Scores: Will $3,600 ($5,600) Drew $10,200 ($17,600) Mehal $19,000 ($27,200))
Will’s current score: $9,200
Will’s maximum possible score: $12,800
Drew’s current score: $27,800
Drew’s maximum possible score: $38,000
Mehal’s current score: $46,200
Mehal’s maximum possible score: $65,200

Will: You can’t improve your standing no matter what you do. (Actual bet: $3,600)

Drew: Mehal has the tournament locked and you can’t lose second. However, if you bet $599 or less, you can win if Mehal inexplicably goes all in here and is incorrect. (Actual bet: $10,200)

Mehal: Bet between $0 and $8,199 and enjoy your win. (Actual bet: $0)

  1. Katerina E. | January 24, 2025 at 9:28 am |

Pretty quick and easy for me. The tenses in the clue attempted to throw me until I got to “worked” and knew it was a deceased composer. Then I took “troll” from “Troll Hill” and narrowed my choices to Grieg and Sibelius. Troll legends are more of a Germanic Nordic thing than a generally Nordic thing, so I went with Grieg, the Norwegian, over Sibelius, the Finn, but was prepared for being incorrect. Fortunately, my logic came through for me and I was correct.

    • I thought only of Grieg, also with hesitation.

    • Only a few minutes ago I realized that there was a disambiguation hint in the clue: the word “hall”, alluding to “In the hall of the mountain king”.

  2. I am so thrilled that Drew is headed to the TOC as the alternate. Good for him.

    • Me too! I have throughly enjoyed the Second Chance and Champions Wildcard Tournaments am quite eager for the start of The Tournament of Champions!!!

  3. An easy one for me, since I visited Troldhaugen when I was in Bergen. If you visit Norway, try hard to take the scenic train ride from Oslo to Bergen. It’s definitely worth the extra time and expense.

  4. Moot point, but I assume Drew meant the German composer Engelbert Humperdinck and not the British singer.

  5. Not kidding here…I recently watched a movie about a giant mountain troll being awakened in Norway. Troll Hill=Troll=Norway=Grieg. I’ll take the win, no matter how I got there.

  6. Mehal’s accuracy is phenomenal, especially since you can tell he’s often buzzing and then pulling the response after. Even if he doesn’t have the answer, he knows whether he knows it. He’s going to be formidable in the ToC.

  7. Helen Sandy | January 24, 2025 at 7:41 pm |

    Team Drew !!

  8. The “Annyong” Arrested Development reference for Mehal’s trivia team took me OUT. 😂 so good!

  9. The only way in which I was correct for FJ is that I “bet” that it would be someone I had heard OF, but not ABOUT.

    • Hi Lisa,

I had zero idea about today’s FJ. I would have needed to come back in another life and knew about composers to get this. LOL

  10. Michael Kurtianyk | January 25, 2025 at 7:47 am |

Why isn’t Lisa Ann Walter unable to go to ToC?

  11. I love that Drew ended up with a Celine Dion question and then missed and walked away behind Mehal!

Retro congrats to Mehal and Drew on their advancement to the TOC.

I very much enjoyed watching these 3 players play. I only wish Will could be in the TOC as well.

I took this coming Monday off of work and then checked the Jeopardy website and saw that there were tickets available for this day, so I scooped up a ticket and I’ll be going to my 4th taping. 🙂
