Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category English Literature) for Wednesday, January 29, 2025 (Season 41, Game 103):

Part II of this 17th century work says, “I see myself now at the end of my journey; my toilsome days are ended”

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:

Neilesh Vinjamuri, a software engineer from Lionville, Pennsylvania
Neilesh Vinjamuri on Jeopardy!
Weckiai Rannila, an engineer from Albuquerque, New Mexico
Weckiai Rannila on Jeopardy!
Greg Jolin, a system specialist & accountant from Raymond, New Hampshire
Greg Jolin on Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

Quarterfinal #3 of the 32nd Tournament of Champions features Greg Jolin, Weckiai Rannila, and Neilesh Vinjamuri. The prediction model thinks that Greg is actually the strongest player in this field at the moment; he would be favored overall if not for the fact that he was fourth in victories and thus has to get through a quarterfinal. And, as we’ve seen so far, anything can happen. Neilesh and Weckiai are a pair of 3-game winners who were in the top players ranked by wins and money over the past season—while 5 wins guarantees you a spot, the show does need to take more players in order to fill out the field—this is something that has happened for the past 40 years and really shouldn’t be a source of confusion amongst Jeopardy! fans.

Cited as the first novel ever written in English, The Pilgrim’s Progress is a 1678 work by John Bunyan written in two parts. Presented as a dream sequence, Christian, its protagonist, journey from his hometown, the “City of Destruction” to the “Celestial City”. A false third part was anonymously written in 1693 but was soon denounced, even though it remained popular.

Because this might come up from various pedants around the Internet today, a reminder as to the show’s rules: leading articles may be added, changed to another leading article, or dropped without rendering a response incorrect; thus, The Pilgrim’s Progress, A Pilgrim’s Progress, and Pilgrim’s Progress are all considered to be equally correct by the show.

Andy’s Thoughts:

  • Honestly, this performance from Neilesh was reminiscent of what Brad Rutter did back in the 2001 ToC quarterfinal to Doug Lach and Bob Fleenor.
  • Due to this game being a runaway for both 1st and 2nd, there is no need for wagering suggestions.

  1. I guessed Milton’s “Paradise Lost.” At least I was in the right century.

  2. Got lucky and guessed it.

Had a friend growing up by the name of John Bunyan so I had to read “The Pilgrim’s Progress.” Couldn’t remember “The” or “A” so just went with “Pilgrim’s Progress” like all of the contestants. Seems like most people just refer to it as “Pilgrim’s Progress.” I knew it wouldn’t make a difference as far as “Jeopardy!” is concerned but I do wonder what the percentage is of people who just drop the article versus those who keep it.

  4. I didn’t have any idea on FJ.

Retro congrats to Neilesh on his dominating victory! He clearly has come to play and could be a very tough out. Based on that performance, I wouldn’t be surprised to see him in the Final and take the whole thing down. Most impressive! 🙂

Tomorrow we get our Champions Wildcard winner Mehal Shah vs. Ryan Manton (4x winner) vs. Will Stewart (3x winner). This should be a good one.

  5. Massive kudos to Greg for going all in on the late DD. You often see players hold back a bit even when betting it all is the only strategically correct move. Hopefully future players take this as inspiration.
