(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s Pop Culture Jeopardy! contestants:

The Bullpen on Pop Culture Jeopardy!
Queerly Benevolent, Anya, Dana, and Scott
Queerly Benevolent on Pop Culture Jeopardy!
The Wickedly Talented, Ellen, Diana, and Marissa
The Wickedly Talented on Pop Culture Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

Our final game of the knockout round features The Wickedly Talented, Queerly Benevolent, and The Bullpen. I believe Ellen from The Wickedly Talented was on the show many years ago, but my rooting interest in this game is easily The Bullpen. I’ve spoken a few times over the past couple of months about having hosted pub quizzes professionally over an 8-year span—two members of The Bullpen, Tom and George, were among my most faithful regulars during my time hosting, and I am 100% cheering for them to advance out of this phase of the competition.

Game Recap & Tonight’s Game Stats:

Here’s the recap for Season 1, Episode 27:

Jeopardy! Round:

(Categories: We Stan A Queen; Hat’s Entertainment; First You Need An “In”; Pop Culture Across America; Music Fandom Nicknames; Hope You Studied Youtubers)

The Wickedly Talented led at the interviews on the strength of six correct responses. After 15 clues, the scores were Wickedly Talented 4,200 Queerly Benevolent 3,400 The Bullpen 1,600.

Statistics at the first break (15 clues):

The Wickedly Talented 6 correct 1 incorrect
Queerly Benevolent 7 correct 2 incorrect
The Bullpen 3 correct 0 incorrect

Today’s interviews:

The Bullpen are a self-described terrible softball team.
Queerly Benevolent all work in the non-profit space.
The Wickedly Talented are all fans of the musical “Wicked”; Diana is a nationally-ranked speed jigsaw puzzler.

The Bullpen found the Daily Double and bet exactly like we hoped, doubling their score and jumping into the lead. While both Wickedly Talented and Queerly Benevolent retook the lead, everyone was within 600 after 30 clues.

Statistics after the Jeopardy round:

Queerly Benevolent 11 correct 2 incorrect
The Wickedly Talented 10 correct 3 incorrect
The Bullpen 7 correct 1 incorrect

Scores after the Jeopardy! Round:

Queerly Benevolent 4,800
The Wickedly Talented 4,800
The Bullpen 4,200

Double Jeopardy! Round:

(Categories: Late Night TV Types; Road Warriors; It’s Manga! It’s Anime! It’s Both; I Quit!; Songwriters Hall Of Fame; 3 Actors, 1 Role)

The Bullpen found—but missed—both Daily Doubles. Fortunately for them, they lost just 2,000 points apiece on them. Queerly Benevolent swept the Triple Play—with good strategy, too, leaving the easiest one on the board for last—to seal a lead going into Final.

Statistics after Double Jeopardy:

Queerly Benevolent 22 correct 2 incorrect
The Bullpen 17 correct 4 incorrect
The Wickedly Talented 13 correct 5 incorrect

Scores going into Final:

Queerly Benevolent 14,400
The Bullpen 11,400
The Wickedly Talented 6,400

All three teams got Final Jeopardy correct as Queerly Benevolent advances despite a non-cover wager.

Tonight’s results:

The Wickedly Talented 6,400 + 6,400 = 12,800 (Who is John Waters?)
The Bullpen 11,400 + 3,001 = 14,401 (Who is jon waters)
Queerly Benevolent 14,400 + 2,700 = 17,100 (Who is John Waters?) (Quarter-Finalist)

Andy’s Thoughts:

  • While that Final Jeopardy wager might affect other opposing strategy going forward–assuming those other quarterfinalists were paying attention—there was some strategic merit to Queerly Benevolent’s wager, as it does still beat all of The Bullpen’s small range. And, unfortunately for The Bullpen, with the scores between three-quarters and four-fifths, the bet of “twice the difference in scores” isn’t a particularly viable one for the situation here—even though it would have won in this case. If this bet from Queerly Benevolent actually was a strategic one and not just a random number that worked, though, I think would have rather seen a bet up to 16,801 and not a bet up to 17,100.
  • Quarterfinal #1 will be between “Beauty and the Beasts”, “South Shore Squad”, and “Glazed and Confused”.
  • Today’s box score will be linked to when posted by the show.

Final Jeopardy! wagering suggestions:

(Scores: Queerly Benevolent 14,400 The Bullpen 11,400 The Wickedly Talented 6,400)

The Wickedly Talented: You can’t both win a Triple Stumper and defend against a small bet from The Bullpen. If you think The Bullpen is going to make a big bet, then bet 400 or less and hope for a cover bet from Queerly Benevolent. If you think The Bullpen will make a small bet, you’ll need to be correct to have a chance, and you should go all in. (Actual bet: 6,400)

Queerly Benevolent: Standard cover bet here is 8,401. If you aren’t going to make the cover bet here, you probably should keep The Wickedly Talented out of contention—and a bet of 1,599 or less does that. (Actual bet: 2,700)

The Bullpen: If you think The Wickedly Talented is going to play for a Triple Stumper and go small, I would bet just 1,401 here—but anything up to 4,599 works. If you think they will go big, then you might have a little bit more room to play with; you could probably could go up to 5,399. (Actual bet: 3,001)

  1. Hey Andy, thanks for the shout-out! We still have yet to find a pub trivia that rivals yours from back in the day.

And the wagering breakdown is greatly appreciated. I’ve been a little haunted by knowing we could have won with a sub-optimal wager, so thanks for providing some solace.

One thing that I haven’t seen discussed much with PCJ! is that the team-based element makes FJ wagering a discussion. Perhaps Queerly Benevolent could hear our wagering plans and knew they didn’t need to cover? In any case, best of luck to them in the quarter-finals!

  2. Andy, your “printed in red” Final Jeopardy clue says ‘bar bag’ instead of ‘barf bag’. Anyone coming here should have seen it on Amazon Prime and already know the correct word, but I think you like to repair typos.

  3. Dana from Queerly Benevolent here! Honestly, I barely remember if we had a wagering strategy, our adrenaline was running so high! Tom, I can def say we DID NOT hear you guys, we were truly in a world of our own. You’re only given 5 mins to wager and it seems like a lot of time but it goes by so quickly in that atmosphere. I definitely thought we had wagered more in FJ, but the day we shot is SUCH a blur now.

    • Bullpen Tom | January 29, 2025 at 8:07 pm |

Fair enough! And I agree, everything about that day is such a blur.

Looking forward to watching you in the next round, and best of retroactive luck!

      • Queerly Anya | January 30, 2025 at 10:57 pm |

Kind of weird to suggest we may have cheated 😕

I’ll shed some light – we couldn’t hear anyone else. Could you hear us?

I wanted to be an aggressive wagerer, my teammates were more conservative in their wagering strategies and trying to balance three opinions in five minutes under all that pressure is a LOT. It’s called Jeopardy for a reason and playing it safe IS a strategy (though I never want to, oops), even if some viewers hate it. 🤷

        • With all due respect, Anya, a lot of non-winning contestants on the Alex Trebek Stage, in coming to terms with not winning, have the thoughts of “is there anything differently I/we could have done to prevent this?” And I think Tom’s statement comes from a place of trying to come to terms with that grief and not actually any accusations of malfeasance.

          • I understand coming to terms with the grief of losing, but suggesting such a thing and in doing so casting doubt on the credibility of the winner feels extremely in poor taste. If he didn’t want to come off as making accusations of wrongdoing on Queerly Benevolent’s part, he could have not said it at all. I thought Queerly Benevolent had a lot of great energy that made the episode fun to watch and I’m excited to see how they do next.

          • For what it’s worth, I’d like to hope that any sort of beef has come to its conclusion at this point.

Best of retroactive luck to Queerly Benevolent in the quarterfinals.

  4. Queerly Anya | January 31, 2025 at 10:53 am |

Absolutely! So leave it at your betting strategy instead of coming for your opponents. Despite a not very exciting Final Jeopardy wager, our numbers throughout the game speak for themselves. Fans may not like to hear this, but we competed in this tournament as three people who just love pop culture – we’re not big pub quiz people, we didn’t discuss much strategy beforehand. It was exciting to win – on our own merits.

    • Bullpen Tom | February 1, 2025 at 2:43 am |

Anya, I’m so sorry I didn’t intend for my comment to come off as accusatory and certainly not of cheating. Your team won fair and square in impressive fashion.

What I was trying to articulate was that one of the differences with the team format is that there is a verbal discussion of wagering which doesn’t happen in the main show and wondering if that might have played a role. Clearly I was wrong.

Apologies again for my comment, I don’t want to take anything away from your victory. Our whole team will certainly be rooting for you in your next match.

Question for Queerly Anya. It looked like you pushed Dana back away from the podium in order to hug Scott. What happened because my wife and I were cracking up when we saw it 😂
