Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

Our second New Year’s Day game of Pop Culture Jeopardy features The Latchkey 3, The Recruits, and Only Winners In The Building. The Latchkey 3 are a trio of siblings, two of whom (Donna and Eric) have been on the Alex Trebek Stage before. Also, I’m reasonably certain that Neal of The Recruits was actually my LearnedLeague opponent the day the full team roster was announced (he was back on the show many years ago, and has recruited a pair of other Austin J! alums in Cecily and Kate), while Only Winners In The Building is comprised of three players who met at the 2021 Tournament of Champions: 8-time champion MacKenzie Jones has teamed up with tournament alternates Elise Nussbaum & Jessica Babbitt (due to COVID restrictions in place at the time of the tournament, the tournament asked multiple alternates to attend the event.) I should also point out that Only Winners In The Building was the subject of way too much ire on Reddit in the leadup to this event, mostly from the “how do some people keep getting cast on shows and I never get cast?” crowd. And, to that crowd, I have to say: in order to get cast on a game show—Jeopardy! included—you have to do a good job of convincing the casting team that people would actually want to see you on television. And, quite frankly, many of those who complain about casting are people who America truly would not want to see on their television screens.

In the case of some of the more obscure former contestants, I’m more loath to give last names—because there are a lot of creepy people on the Internet and within the fandom (some of which came to a head yesterday, in fact, when one of the more infamous ones was discovered commenting on Reddit) and I don’t want to make their job easier.

Andy’s Thoughts:

  • From a strategy perspective: A bet of 4,000 on DD3 would have still ensured a lead, while not risking being put in a runaway position on an incorrect response.

Final Jeopardy! wagering suggestions:

(Scores: Only Winners In The Building 22,400 The Recruits 18,400 The Latchkey 3 4,000)

The Latchkey 3: I realize your team might have been snakebitten by past mistakes on the Alex Trebek Stage here, but unfortunately, you have exactly one good bet here, because your score is exactly the difference between first and second. Betting anything less than all 4,000 of your points throws away any chance you have here at victory. (Actual bet: 0)

The Recruits: Bet no more than 10,399 to keep The Latchkey 3 locked out. (Actual bet: 10,400)

Only Winners In The Building: Standard cover bet over The Recruits is 14,401. (Actual bet: 14,401)
