Here’s the Pop Culture Jeopardy Final Jeopardy (in the category Billboard No. 1 Hits) for Wednesday, February 19, 2025 (Season 1, Game 34):

This artist was inspired by a picture of George Brett; the resulting song was No. 1 for 9 weeks

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

Our first quarterfinal of the week features Those Darn Etruscans, Orange Juice No Pulp, and Queerly Benevolent. As Colin Jost has said before, one of these teams will go to 2-0, while two of them will go to 1-1.

I did mention this a couple of weeks ago, but it should be noted that there’s no guarantee that quarterfinalists would have seen their opponents’ knockout games taped. However, in the semifinals, they would have seen their opponents’ quarterfinals taped. So, Orange Juice and Etruscans may not know Queerly Benevolent’s betting tendencies from the knockout round.

Lorde was inspired by a photograph of George Brett—of the Kansas City Royals—to write what would become her breakout hit single.

Would it ever have been nice to see The Bullpen play this clue, as this would have been their quarterfinal. I say it would have been nice, because The Bullpen pretty much played this exact clue ten years ago in one of my pub quizzes when the Lorde song came out.

Orange Juice No Pulp has Joslyn, who is still “mad” at Whitney over a cancelled fitness class membership.
Queerly Benevolent started dating seven years after they met.

The second half of the round saw a stand-and-stare on the Triple Play and Queerly Benevolent lose 1,000 on the Daily Double. Orange Juice No Pulp still led after 30 clues.

Double Jeopardy! Round:

(Categories: Drumming To A Theatre Near You; Wild Talk Show Guests; Eau D’Who?; The Kid’s “American”; Team Pet; Staten Island)

The conservatism continued in Double Jeopardy; Queerly Benevolent took the lead on DD2, while Those Darn Etruscans, with an opportunity to get back into the game on DD3, bet just 1,800 in spite of Colin’s very wise betting suggestion. Though an incorrect response still meant they had some money, they were still in a distant third as Queerly Benevolent led going into Final Jeopardy.

Statistics after Double Jeopardy:

Queerly Benevolent 20 correct 4 incorrect
Orange Juice No Pulp 16 correct 2 incorrect
Those Darn Etruscans 9 correct 1 incorrect

Scores going into Final:

Queerly Benevolent 12,700
Orange Juice No Pulp 11,800
Those Darn Etruscans 4,000

This Final Jeopardy was a Triple Stumper; after the wagering shook down—Orange Juice No Pulp bet too much here—our winners were Queerly Benevolent, who are now semifinalists!

Tonight’s results:

Those Darn Etruscans 4,000 – 4,000 = 0 (Who is Fogerty?)
Orange Juice No Pulp 11,800 – 7,000 = 4,800 (Who is Old Town Road?)
Queerly Benevolent 12,700 – 7,000 = 5,700 (Who is Garth Brook) (Semi-Finalist)

Final Jeopardy! wagering suggestions:

(Scores: Queerly Benevolent 12,700 Orange Juice No Pulp 11,800 Those Darn Etruscans 4,000)

Queerly Benevolent: Standard cover bet in this one is 10,901. However, because I know your team doesn’t make the cover bet, allow me to make the following suggestion, as this is a game that follows the Strong Form of Shore’s Conjecture: A bet of 2,901 covers all of Orange Juice’s low range while still positions your team well in case of a Triple Stumper. (Actual bet: 7,000)

Orange Juice No Pulp: In this one, I would bet between 1,801 and 3,799 to keep Those Darn Etruscans locked out.(Actual bet: 7,000)

Those Darn Etruscans: Bet no more than 1,799 to stay in front of Queerly Benevolent if they make the cover bet. (Actual bet: 4,000)

  1. It certainly would have been nice, Andy! It was an instant get for me specifically because of your pub quiz.

Regardless, congrats to Queerly Benevolent for advancing to the semis!

  2. Poor Lorde, to find out that she is not THAT famous, even as trivia [defined as “information of little importance”].

  3. If it makes The Bullpen feel any better, Lorde is one of my favorite artists ever, and I couldn’t even muster a guess to this clue!

  4. we just bet on vibes, Andy! we never even discussed (and clearly did not implement) any betting strategy, unfortch.

    • Well, at least it worked out for you and would also have worked out for you had OJNP and y’all both gotten FJ right instead of both gotten FJ wrong.

[I would have wagered 4,699 because not knowing how much OJNP was gonna wager (besides not knowing who is gonna get FJ correct), that would leave you with only one of the other two who COULD end ahead of y’all. Now, I couldn’t support that being the best strategy, but it IS a strategy rather than a vibe 😉.]

  5. Scott from Queerly Benevolent here. Speaking just for myself, I’m not a Jeopardy die-hard and didn’t go in knowing the ideal betting strategies. Anya and Dana were a little more savvy than I as regular watchers. We did our best with basically no strategy or prep beforehand. Both teams were fantastic, and we got lucky!

  6. Queerly Anya | February 20, 2025 at 2:20 pm |

We would have lost the game on a cover bet soooooooo seems like vibes was actually the right strategy here. The condescension is truly wild when we were just doing our best and having fun!

(I promise there is one time we actually implemented a wagering strategy, so hopefully it’s one you’ll approve of!)
