Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category British Royalty) for Thursday, March 6, 2025 (Season 41, Game 129):
In the 12th c. after walking barefoot, this man stripped down & allowed himself to be flogged by dozens of monks
(correct response beneath the contestants)
Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:
Juveria Zaheer, a psychiatrist from Whitby, Ontario, Canada (0 wins)![]() |
Roger Craig, an applied scientist from Arlington, Virginia (0 wins)![]() |
Matt Amodio, a quantitative researcher from New York, New York (1 win)![]() |
Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:
After a very dominant performance on the buzzer yesterday from Matt Amodio—there was a stretch in Double Jeopardy where he responded to ten consecutive clues—he is a win away from a return to Jeopardy! Masters, while both Roger Craig and Juveria Zaheer may need to make some adjustments in order to get a victory in against Matt. The Unified Prediction Model thinks that there’s a 36% chance of today being the last tournament game this season, which would then give us—with the exception of the yearly six-week break in August and early September for reruns—uninterrupted regular play until about the end of the calendar year.

(The following write-up is original content and is copyright 2025 The Jeopardy! Fan. It may not be copied without linked attribution back to this page.)
Three years after the murder of Thomas Becket in Canterbury Cathedral, Henry II was facing difficult times in England; he had been betrayed by many of his barons as well as his two sons and his wife (Eleanor of Aquitaine) as Scotland was invading from the north. It was at this time that he believed that England had been “haunted” by the ghost of Thomas—murdered by Henry’s knights who believed it to be at the behest of Henry—and that Henry must do penance to right the wrong. Thus, after arriving in Canterbury, he walked barefoot from outside the city to the cathedral, bloodying his feet, and permitted himself to be flogged by dozens of monks as penance, receiving nearly 300 lashings. Having sought and received the forgiveness of God, things turned back England and Henry’s way, as the invasion was put down and he regained control of his barons.
Much like many of the Final Jeopardy clues this tournament, I think this is a clue of reasonable difficulty for this level of play; I could see this clue playing 3-for-3 in-studio, but that’s only because we have three incredibly bright players.

Andy’s Thoughts:
- Why do second and third get the same amount? The Pop Culture Jeopardy final that aired yesterday gives us a very compelling reason as to why.
- Today’s box score will be linked to when posted by the show.
Final Jeopardy! wagering suggestions:
(Scores: Juveria $16,000 Matt $13,600 Roger $9,400)
Matt: Cover bet over Roger is $5,201. However, if you do want to play games with Roger here—and you do have a game in hand to try this—if you cover, the most he can bet is $1,000. Thus, you could try betting between $2 and $3,198 to defend against that. (Actual bet: $2,401)
Roger: I would hope for cover bets from Matt and Juveria here, along with a Triple Stumper, and bet $1,000 or less. (Actual bet: $4,201)
Juveria: Cover bet over Matt is $11,201. (Actual bet: $11,201)
Current Jeopardy Masters odds:
Victoria Groce +340
James Holzhauer +360
Yogesh Raut +400
Matt Amodio +490
Neilesh Vinjamuri +690
Producer’s Pick +740

Based solely on the name, “Edward the Confessor” was my guess (only about a century off).
From the FJ responses, it looks like Roger went on the same mind-journey I did, before finally settling on Richard I. I started off with Edward I, but realized he was too late for the 12th century. Then I went to the early Norman kings and picked Henry I (so close!), but then remembered Richard I and that he came along at the tail end of the century, so changed to him.
Congratulations go to Matt in winning the JIT. Now it’s back to seeing Laura Faddah and her continued winning.
I was at the tapings of the next 3 shows and the secrets are safe with me. 🙂
Even if they did not remember this famous episode in English history , they at least should have remembered Richard Burton’s movie
It must be tough to pull the correct association in thirty seconds under that kind of pressure. Thinking that it was a Crusade-related ritual seems perfectly understandable.
Figuring there’s been a lot of King Edwards (11) and Henrys (8), it had to be one of them. I finally decided on one of the Henrys but never got around to figuring out whether it was 1, 2 or 3 within the allotted 30 seconds. Close but no cigar.
All I could think of was the song by Herman’s Hermits and it kept running through my mind.
“I’m Henry the eighth, I am
Henry the eighth, I am, I am
I got married to the widow next door
She’s been married seven times before…”
“And every one was an Henry (Henry)
She wouldn’t have a Willy or a Sam (no Sam)
I’m her eighth old man, I’m Henry
Henry the eighth, I am.”
Robert!
You just cracked me up.
Thanks.
🙂
Second verse, same as the first 🙂
Robert, Thanks for the ear worm! It’s making me smile
Mary!
Now I am laughing even more.
Thanks!
When will the Masters producer pick be announced?
And has a date been announced for the Masters Tournament?
Hi Rick,
The first 2 iterations have been played in Primetime on ABC and have been in May.
Jeff!
Thanks. I kinda sorta remember a Mon Wed Fri format…
Yes, that’s what I remember as well! 🙂
For FJ, I went with Henry VIII. At least I got the Henry part right, LOL
Retro congrats to Matt on the great wager and winning of the JIT! On to the Masters!
That was a great game tonight. 🙂
I saw that Rowan Ward was in the crowd of Team Juveria. The JIT was taped a week after the 3 regular season episodes I saw taped on January 27th. The JIT was delayed due to the wildfires out here. When I was at the taping on the 27th, I saw Rowan then. It was my 2nd time meeting Rowan and they are always fun to talk to about Jeopardy and Horse Racing. 🙂 Great human being!
Well, I was doubly surprised by this FJ result… 1) that they ALL THREE guessed the SAME (wrong) king that I did [which for me, practically “a hick from the sticks”, was a TOTAL GUESS] and 2) after reading Andy’s explanation, I would have thought that as much as high level players seem to study British history that AT LEAST ONE of them would have gotten it right (because it is such a memorable story).
Wonder if Masters will have the runner-up payouts be equal like the ToC and JIT did this year.
Seems like from Andy said, it would be a good idea.
Found this tougher than any of the J.I.T. FJs.
