Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Ranks & Titles) for Monday, March 2, 2026 (Season 42, Game 126):
Still in use today, this title may come from the idea that Roman priests made bridges between men & the gods
(correct response beneath the contestants)
Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:
Noah Hamilton, a marketing manager from Saint Paul, Minnesota
|
Marissa Klein, a teacher from San Francisco, California
|
Diana Miller, an attorney from Richmond, Virginia (1-day total: $16,399)
|
Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:
Diana Miller rode a singleton get in Final Jeopardy on Friday to become the new champion; today, she defends her tittle against Marissa Klein and Noah Hamilton. Recent history is on Diana’s side in terms of defending her title, though—the last seven champions have all been multi-day winners. The last one who wasn’t: Joseph Evans back on November 4, losing to ToCer Allegra Kuney the next day.
Fans of Pop Culture Jeopardy! might recognize one of our challengers; Marissa was on “The Wickedly Talented”.

Correct response: What is pontiff?

(The following write-up is original content and is copyright 2026 The Jeopardy! Fan. It may not be copied without linked attribution back to this page.)
The term “pontiff” (and related term “Pontifex”—after all, the Pope’s social media handle is @Pontifex), most used today in relation to the Pope, and it generally comes from “bridge-maker”. Not only were bridges on Earth seen by many as divine inspiration, it was believed that in ancient Rome, priests bridged the gap between men and gods.
This feels like one of those classic “word origins” finals disguised as a “rank & title” final; this could have aired at any point in the last 30-40 years without much difficulty.

Game Recap:
It’s not often that I lead off by reporting on negative records and statistics, but Marissa’s self-describing this online as a unique occurrence is enough for me to report on it—and she was right. The story of this game was that Marissa became the first player in Jeopardy! history to be incorrect on three True Daily Doubles in the same game, falling back to $0 each time—though I, much like Ken, admired Marissa’s wagers in all three cases. Diana led entering Final Jeopardy over Noah, while Marissa still battled to the end, ensuring she could at least play Final Jeopardy.
Final Jeopardy broke in Noah’s direction, as he was the only player correct. That makes him the new champion; he’ll be back tomorrow to defend.
Scores going into Final:
Diana $12,200
Noah $8,600
Marissa $2,000
Tonight’s results:
Marissa $2,000 – $0 = $2,000 (What is deacon)
Noah $8,600 + $1,390 = $9,990 (What is Pontifex) (1-day total: $9,990)
Diana $12,200 – $5,001 = $7,199 (What is father?)

Game Stats:
Noah $8,600 Coryat, 14 correct, 2 incorrect, 26.32% in first on buzzer (15/57), 0/1 on rebound attempts (on 4 rebound opportunities)
Diana $12,200 Coryat, 16 correct, 2 incorrect, 31.58% in first on buzzer (18/57), 0/0 on rebound attempts (on 3 rebound opportunities)
Marissa $11,600 Coryat, 17 correct, 5 incorrect, 31.58% in first on buzzer (18/57), 1/1 on rebound attempts (on 3 rebound opportunities)
Combined Coryat Score: $32,400
Noah Hamilton, to win:
2 games: 38.820%
3: 15.070%
4: 5.850%
5: 2.271%
6: 0.882%
Avg. streak: 1.635 games.
Andy’s Thoughts:
- Just because I haven’t said anything negative about a platform recently doesn’t mean I’m not judging (and potentially cheering against) the contestants who continue to support that platform.
- That certainly ends any discussion as to whether “Pontifex” would be accepted by the judges.
- Today’s J!6 clues can be found at the monthly archive.
Final Jeopardy! wagering suggestions:
(Scores: Diana $12,200 Noah $8,600 Marissa $2,000)
Diana: Standard cover bet is $5,001. However, if you are really sure that Noah will go small, you can defend against that with a bet between $2 and $2,198. (Actual bet: $5,001)
Marissa: You need a pair of overbets to have any hope. Bet whatever you like. (Actual bet: $0)
Noah: The overwhelming majority of the time, the leader bets to cover here, and there’s no need to change that thought process until the leaders start acting differently. Bet between $0 and $1,399 and hope for Diana to be incorrect in Final Jeopardy. (Actual bet: $1,390)
