Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Energy) for Friday, May 8, 2026 (Season 42, Game 175):
The first power plant using this type of energy was built in Italy, at a site thought to have inspired Dante
(correct response beneath the contestants)
Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:
Bill Bogan, a research administration specialist from Lafayette, Indiana
|
Natalie Oyler-Lusco, a marketing professional from Baltimore, Maryland
|
Tristan Williams, a data scientist originally from Lincoln, Nebraska (2-day total: $38,400)
|
Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:
Tristan Williams escaped with a victory in yesterday’s game thanks to a low wager and an incorrect response, respectively, from his two opponents. Now, Tristan looks to guarantee himself a spot in the next postseason with a victory today. His challengers today are Bill Bogan of Lafayette, Indiana and Natalie Oyler-Lusco of Baltimore, Maryland.
Elsewhere in the Jeopardy! calendar, tonight at 8:00 (7:00 Central) on ABC and CTV features our last quarterfinal of this season of Celebrity Jeopardy!, featuring Mo Rocca, Mira Sorvino, and Ray Romano.
Additionally, next Monday will see the start of Season 2 of Pop Culture Jeopardy! on Netflix; one episode will be released each weekday between May 11 and June 5. It would be nice if we got some sort of “this week’s contestants” information for Pop Culture Jeopardy the same way we get it for the regular show, and I’m disappointed that this hasn’t happened yet.

In Italy’s Valle del Diavolo (Devil’s Valley) near Larderello, the world’s first geothermal power plant began operation in the 1910s, after Prince Piero Ginori Conti successfully lit four lightbulbs with a geothermal power generator seven years prior, harnessing the power of steam. The fumaroles in the area are said to have inspired Dante’s vision of Hell in his works, specifically his Divine Comedy series. While geothermal power itself is only thought to be able to meet 3 to 5% of worldwide energy demand by 2050, it can be an important renewable source of energy in those areas that can support it.

Game Recap:
Tristan very nearly reached the 30-correct-response mark again, but this time he went 3/3 in the Daily Doubles; this allowed him to cruise to a runaway victory today.
Much like two days ago, Tristan’s runaway was crucial, as Bill came up with a singleton get in Final Jeopardy. Tristan’s runaway makes him a 3-game champion, though, as he goes for win #4 on Monday.
Scores going into Final:
Tristan $26,400
Bill $10,200
Natalie $3,200
Tonight’s results:
Natalie $3,200 – $3,199 = $1 (What is coal?)
Bill $10,200 + $3,600 = $13,800 (What is geothermal?)
Tristan $26,400 – $3,601 = $22,799 (What is volcanic?) (3-day total: $61,199)

Game Stats:
Tristan $20,800 Coryat, 29 correct, 3 incorrect, 49.12% in first on buzzer (28/57), 0/1 on rebound attempts (on 2 rebound opportunities)
Bill $10,200 Coryat, 12 correct, 0 incorrect, 19.30% in first on buzzer (11/57), 1/1 on rebound attempts (on 4 rebound opportunities)
Natalie $3,200 Coryat, 7 correct, 3 incorrect, 15.79% in first on buzzer (9/57), 0/1 on rebound attempts (on 2 rebound opportunities)
Combined Coryat Score: $34,200
Tristan Williams, to win:
4 games: 58.489%
5: 34.210%
6: 20.009%
7: 11.703%
8: 6.845%
Avg. streak: 4.409 games.
Andy’s Thoughts:
- Today’s runaway for both first and second places means no wagering suggestions will be posted.
- Today’s J!6 clues can be found at the monthly archive.
