First-run episodes of Jeopardy! resume this week, with three weeks of Second Chance competition. All of these players played in Season 37 of the show, and each week’s winner will advance to a new competition, Champions’ Wildcard, featuring past champions from Season 37 and 38, competing for a spot in a Tournament of Champions that will take place at the conclusion of the WGA strike.
It is still my editorial belief that these players were deliberately chosen on short notice in order to ensure that they would be less likely to study the recycled questions that are being used due to the WGA strike.
Monday will also be the first day where the consolation prizes are $3,000 and $2,000 instead of $2,000 and $1,000 as they were in the past.

Gabriel performed very strongly against ToC semifinalist Ryan Hemmel, but fell on the wrong side of his first Daily Double and Final Jeopardy. One thing that Reddit was quick to point out when the lineup for this competition was released was the incredible irony of Gabriel being introduced as a “script writer” in the middle of the WGA strike. That being said: it appears as though Gabriel does not write entertainment scripts, but instead is a writer for NBC Bay Area.

In his initial appearance, Derek finished third against Julia Markham Cameron and Verlinda Johnson Henning; however, he did have a 5-digit Coryat score, buoyed by the majority of his doing very well in the bottom two rows of the board.
Overall Thoughts: Going just off “initial appearance”, Gabriel definitely has the strongest stats of the three players. If that holds—and remember, it’s been two to three years since these players were on, and a lot can happen in two to three years—then I think Gabriel is the most likely to advance. However, anything can happen!

I can’t believe how naive we were then, considering how the following six months played out.) David was playing very well before losing $10,000 on a very late Daily Double. In fact, David was probably the biggest omission from last year’s Second Chance competition. He’s also likely been keeping himself in the best “game shape”, helping many other prospective contestants prepare for their own appearances.

Overall Thoughts: I think this game has three very strong players in it, but I also think that David’s been keeping himself in the best game shape. There’s a lot of variance in Jeopardy!, though, so any of these three players can absolutely win this game.
