Good morning! Today is Monday, April 19, 2021 (Season 37, Game 146). It’s the first day of Anderson Cooper’s hosting stint. I’ve been looking forward to these two weeks, as Anderson Cooper has been considered the favorite since late 2014 to replace Alex Trebek. One more thing that I’d like to note: There are a lot of people who believe that Anderson Cooper is the face of “fake news”, as they have been brainwashed by the cult of Donald Trump into believing this. I will make this abundantly clear: if you believe that Anderson Cooper proffers fake news, you are wrong, your opinion is not valid, you have been brainwashed by a fascist cult leader, you need to be deprogrammed, and you are not welcome here at this website. Moreover, you have completely ruined the ability of anyone to have any sort of reasonable discourse in both the replacement host search and in today’s society in general.
Now: Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Paintings):
The New York Times noted “balls of orange-yellow light” & “the town off in the distance” from the artist’s window in this piece
(correct response beneath the contestants)
Today’s contestants:
Mike Nelson, an actor originally from Chesterton, Indiana![]() |
Donna Vorreyer, a writer & retired teacher from Willowbrook, Illinois![]() |
Patrick Hume, a project manager originally from Stoneham, Massachusetts (3-day total: $60,500)![]() |
Andy’s Pregame Thoughts: Patrick has played a very strong three games, winning the last three of Aaron Rodgers’ stint. If he can pick up a different host’s cadence—which can be difficult—Patrick should be able to win a fourth game. It’s never easy coming back for a new week, though.
PSA: The best way to keep COVID-19 at bay (and keep Jeopardy! producing new episodes) is for everybody to get their vaccinations as soon as they are able to. When wearing a mask, ensure that your mask covers both your nose and your mouth.

Andy, Great commentary about the myth of fake news and the cult of T***p…
I agree!
Thanks, Andy, for your clear and cogent commentary.
You go, Andy!
When I saw the contestant photos this morning on Jeopardy.com, I was surprised to see an apparently familiar face.
I have yet to see the show today, but if contestant “Mike Nelson” is the same person as actor “Mike C. Nelson”, he has quite the acting resume.

Thank you for your comments Andy.
Well said, Andy! I too was looking forward to seeing how Anderson would do. Unfortunately the show was preempted by the more important coverage of the Chauvin murder trial so I look forward to seeing you summary soon.
First painting that came to my mind when I read the clue. I’m guessing all three will get it. And hope nobody adds an ‘s’ to the end of ‘night’.
I am guessing all three will get this one since this was the first painting that came to me when I saw the clue. Hope all will get this right without adding S to the end of Night
is there an echo in here 🙂
I am afraid that, if I were filling out my FJ answer, I would have added an extra “starry” because of Don McLean.
This will be a fun 2 weeks with Anderson Cooper. He will pick up the rhythm of the game quickly.
I just love the guy’s personality and I especially enjoy his New Year’s Eve shows from Times Square NYC
Jeopardy preempted on the one day this week I could have watched. Oh well. Would have been disappointing to see Patrick lose.
I’m very confused.
I’ve read and reread my words in the first paragraph. All I said is that “if you believe that Anderson Cooper proffers fake news”. I made absolutely no further accusations regarding opposing him as a host.
I suggest that a lot of you are bringing your personal biases into things and need to stop putting words in my mouth.
Is this in response to comments that were deleted?
Yes.
I also went back and reread what you wrote after reading the comment and couldn’t figure out why it triggered that person so much.
He did much better than I thought he would.
People may recognize Mike Nelson from the Progressive Insurance adverts, where he plays a man who is turning into his father

There’s an interesting tie-in between this clue and Alex Trebek. At Alex’s last Christmas party for the Jeopardy crew in 2019, Don McLean was the featured performer, asked to be there personally by Alex.

Well said, Andy!
It is refreshing to have a well-known left-leaning host on J! I hope they make him full time just to watch the Trumpies squirm
It’s too bad you have personally chosen to introduce politics into what many of us had hoped would be the last bastion of non-political TV. I support your right to do this (it is your webpage) but I truly wish you had not crossed that line. Once you cross it, you can’t go back.
Thank heavens for the 1st Amendment! The pen is mightier than the sword…that’s why the Founding Fathers chose Freedom of Speech to be FIRST Amendment. As for political neutrality, I wouldn’t have cared which way Alex Trebek was leaning…if he was a raving loon (Left OR Right Wing) off the set, I would still watch Jeopardy! because I like to challenge myself against the folks on stage, and I feel the show enriches our lives by adding some knowledge we did not have 30 minutes prior.
As you can see by the comments, the majority of this site’s readers fully support Andy’s beliefs. If you don’t like it John you can always watch Wheel!
Every night I try to guess the correct Final Jeopardy! response before the clue is even revealed (just for fun) and tonight was one of the time I did so…my wife is a witness!
Oh and I’d also like to thank Andy for his very frank and insightful commentary. You’re dead on.
Watching Anderson Cooper guest host the show tonight, it was hard to believe this was his first time doing so. It felt like he had been doing it for years. Anderson Cooper needs to be the permanent replacement for Alex Trebek!
Anderson Cooper did very well. It’s clear that prior experience in presenting is an advantage for doing this job.
Andy, I want to also say that your comments at the beginning of today’s post is on the mark. I always want to give the guest host a chance before commenting on them, and I have to say that Anderson did a great job in his first game. Sorry to disappoint those people who think that his political beliefs were going to interfere with his hosting. It seemed like he had been hosting for a lot more time than this being his first game as host.
Andy, count me in as thankful for your spot-on commentary.
I also felt that Anderson Cooper did a fantastic job as guest host …IMHO the best one so far.
I’ll miss Patrick as a champion … He came across as humble and very likeable.
With three wins, he could be invited to the next Tournament of Champions. Especially since so few people have achieved three wins this year. At this rate it’s going to be hard to find 15 five-time champions.
Well said Andy! You rock!
Great comments and fully agree on your statement today. As to Anderson Cooper as a host, is very good, but he is just a beat slow on confirming correct answers. I suspect he may be getting cued from producers on this and that may be causing the lag. Otherwise he is fine and I like his personality.
