Andy’s Pre-Game Thoughts:

On yesterday’s series premiere, Birmingham G.P. Mayank Dadheech became the first champion of this series when he picked up £4,801 in his victory. Today, he faces off against Miles Searle and Steph O’Donoghue. One thing that some fans of British quizzing have pointed out: Steph was the winner of The People’s Quiz on BBC back in 2007; the producers of Jeopardy! UK have certainly gone for top-shelf quizzers when producing this version!

One change from yesterday is the airtime: while the premiere aired after The Chase at 5:45 PM GMT (12:45 PM Eastern), the show’s normal time slot for the rest of the run is going to be 4:00 PM GMT (11:00 AM Eastern).

You may be wondering why I’ve elected not to include pictures before the game of Steph and Miles, when their photographs appeared at the end of yesterday’s game. That’s simply because I felt that I could get better-quality screenshots of today’s episode when it airs; I feel it would be a disservice to them both to include lower-quality screenshots from yesterday’s finish.

Interestingly, Mayank’s winning total yesterday of £4,801 came in a little bit higher than I was expecting to see; the full board value is £9,600, and I was expecting to see a winning score in the £3,000–£4,000 range (an average winning score in the US of $20,000 is set on a $54,000 board; that’s about 37%—I extrapolated that to come up with a range around £3,500) That range of £3,500, plus or minus a few hundred quid, is also a little bit less than what The Chase averages in prizes (though The Chase will certainly see more variance depending on Chaser performance.)

At first, yesterday, I was very confused by a lot of the negative reviews of the show that I’d read on social media; I’d certainly been left wondering if I’d somehow been fed a different show entirely! In my opinion, the pacing of the show allows Stephen Fry to be Stephen Fry—it’s certainly a British take on the American version and I think they’re doing a very good job with their time allotted—and I very much enjoyed the show yesterday. I know I’ve thrown veiled criticism towards Inside the Magic in the past, but credit where credit is due here: I think their headline descriptor of “review bombed” is the only possible explanation for this, with the review-bombing coming from a subset of homophobic British viewers who want to see any project with Stephen Fry on it fail miserably. (Certainly, a number of those negative reviews were a little more, shall we say, clear in their reasoning on social media.)

• This is clearly turning into a Stephen Fry vehicle and I am here for it. This series has been absolutely delightful to watch; you can tell he is 100% enjoying himself while hosting and it’s very entertaining.
