Chris D'Angelo on Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

We have a new champion on Jeopardy! in Chris D’Angelo after he played giant-killer yesterday, taking down 10-day champion Tristan Williams. Today, he faces off against Sidney Elie-Pierre and Liz Guinn.

I would like to make one more comment on what I said yesterday. I feel as though I know what I am doing is right when I receive angry emails from white supremacists every single time I decide to use my platform to call out their behavior. I’m not going to stop using my platform the best way I can.

Final Jeopardy! Category: Sports Venues

Final Jeopardy! Clue: Surface material laid down in 1909 gave a landmark venue this nickname; a 36-in strip remains today

In order to redesign our merchandise area to serve you better in 2026, all merchandise sales have been temporarily taken offline. Look for a return in late 2026! All previous orders will still be supported.

Correct response: What is The Brickyard?

More Information About Final Jeopardy!:

When the world-famous Indianapolis Motor Speedway opened in 1909, its original surface was crushed stone and tar. However, that surface was extremely prone to breaking up and flinging stones backward from the racing cars and was incredibly unsafe and treacherous for drivers and riding mechanics alike. Thus, in the fall of 1909, it was decided to repave the track’s 2.5-mile surface with 3.2 million bricks, giving IMS its famous nickname, “The Brickyard”. Over the coming years, it was decided to pave the bricks with asphalt, with the banked corners paved first in 1936, followed by the straights by 1961, leaving just a three-foot stretch of brick marking the start-finish line at the Speedway.

When contestants are brought in to tape, they have long been given an approximate time of year when their episodes are scheduled to air; these contestants would have been told “late May”. If any contestant chose to look at an event calendar to jog their memory about various events happening in late May—after all, the Indianapolis 500 is taking place on Sunday—this becomes a significantly easier clue. Given this, and the fact that the Indianapolis 500 is a major reason why I have been such a large fan of motor racing over the past three decades and still compete in sim racing competitions, I will be personally disappointed if this clue does not play 3-for-3 in studio.

Game Recap & Tonight’s Game Stats:

Looking to find out who won Jeopardy! today? Here’s the Thursday, May 21, 2026 Jeopardy! by the numbers, along with a recap:

Jeopardy! Round:

(Categories: Name That Author; Familial Words & Phrases; Business Notables; Broadway Title Characters; A Republic; If You Can, Keep It)

Although the Daily Double stayed hidden—no thanks to some of the clue selections—Chris held a big lead through 15 clues; scores were Chris $7,200 Liz $1,600 Sidney -$200.

Statistics at the first break (15 clues):

Chris 9 correct 0 incorrect
Liz 3 correct 0 incorrect
Sidney 1 correct 2 incorrect

Today’s interviews:

Liz is ranked at pinball. (But, as this recapper can attest, anyone can get a ranking.)
Sidney once won a 3-year supply of Slurpees.
Chris saw the Royal Family on the Isle of Man.

Despite Chris’s only incorrect response this round coming on the Daily Double, his strong play continued and he still held a big lead through 30 clues. Chris went 4/5 in authors, familial words, and business notables, while Liz went 3/5 in Broadway and things you keep.

Statistics after the Jeopardy round:

Chris 17 correct 1 incorrect
Liz 8 correct 0 incorrect
Sidney 1 correct 4 incorrect

Scores after the Jeopardy! Round:

Chris $8,000
Liz $3,400
Sidney -$800

Double Jeopardy! Round:

(Categories: Where The Resources Are; Historic Brits; The Movie Industry; Contains A Texting Abbreviation; The Dye Is Cast; What’s The Difference?)

Chris found both Daily Doubles in this round; an incorrect response on the second one, though, meant that things were close entering Final instead of being a runaway. Chris ran movies and went 4/5 in historic Brits.

Statistics after Double Jeopardy:

Chris 32 correct 6 incorrect
Liz 15 correct 1 incorrect
Sidney 2 correct 5 incorrect
Total number of unplayed clues this season: 11 (0 today).

Scores going into Final:

Chris $14,600
Liz $11,000
Sidney -$1,200

Neither player was correct on this Final Jeopardy clue. Chris, though, decided that Liz was going to somehow choose some random number as a bet, and picked a number to beat Liz’s random number, and was rather fortunate that it worked out for him, despite Liz making a much more strategically sound wager. He’s now a 2-day champion, will go for win #3 tomorrow, and I certainly hope tomorrow’s players in the audience saw that.

Tonight’s results:

Sidney -$1,200 (By rule, did not participate in Final Jeopardy)
Liz $11,000 – $3,700 = $7,300 (What is Wimbledon?)
Chris $14,600 – $5,401 = $9,199 (What is Rock Field?) (2-day total: $28,600)

Chris D'Angelo, today's Jeopardy! winner (for the May 21, 2026 game.)
