Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Sports Venues) for Thursday, May 21, 2026 (Season 42, Game 184):

Surface material laid down in 1909 gave a landmark venue this nickname; a 36-in strip remains today

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:

Liz Guinn, a law school administrator from Seattle, Washington
Liz Guinn on Jeopardy!
Sidney Elie-Pierre, a software engineer from Albertson, New York
Sidney Elie-Pierre on Jeopardy!
Chris D’Angelo, a content manager from Washington, D.C. (1-day total: $19,401)
Chris D'Angelo on Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

We have a new champion on Jeopardy! in Chris D’Angelo after he played giant-killer yesterday, taking down 10-day champion Tristan Williams. Today, he faces off against Sidney Elie-Pierre and Liz Guinn.

I would like to make one more comment on what I said yesterday. I feel as though I know what I am doing is right when I receive angry emails from white supremacists every single time I decide to use my platform to call out their behavior. I’m not going to stop using my platform the best way I can.

Correct response: What is The Brickyard?

(The following write-up is original content and is copyright 2026 The Jeopardy! Fan. It may not be copied without linked attribution back to this page.)

When the world-famous Indianapolis Motor Speedway opened in 1909, its original surface was crushed stone and tar. However, that surface was extremely prone to breaking up and flinging stones backward from the racing cars and was incredibly unsafe and treacherous for drivers and riding mechanics alike. Thus, in the fall of 1909, it was decided to repave the track’s 2.5-mile surface with 3.2 million bricks, giving IMS its famous nickname, “The Brickyard”. Over the coming years, it was decided to pave the bricks with asphalt, with the banked corners paved first in 1936, followed by the straights by 1961, leaving just a three-foot stretch of brick marking the start-finish line at the Speedway.

When contestants are brought in to tape, they have long been given an approximate time of year when their episodes are scheduled to air; these contestants would have been told “late May”. If any contestant chose to look at an event calendar to jog their memory about various events happening in late May—after all, the Indianapolis 500 is taking place on Sunday—this becomes a significantly easier clue. Given this, and the fact that the Indianapolis 500 is a major reason why I have been such a large fan of motor racing over the past three decades and still compete in sim racing competitions, I will be personally disappointed if this clue does not play 3-for-3 in studio.

Game Recap:

Chris D’Angelo gave twice as many correct responses as Liz Guinn did, but a pair of incorrect Daily Doubles meant that things were still quite close entering Final Jeopardy today.

Neither player was correct in Final Jeopardy, and Liz’s sound strategy was foiled by Chris selecting a random number to bet to reach in Final Jeopardy. Chris’s lack of a cover bet makes him a 2-day champion; he’ll go for #3 tomorrow.

Scores going into Final:

Chris $14,600
Liz $11,000
Sidney -$1,200

Tonight’s results:

Sidney -$1,200 (By rule, did not participate in Final Jeopardy)
Liz $11,000 – $3,700 = $7,300 (What is Wimbledon?)
Chris $14,600 – $5,401 = $9,199 (What is Rock Field?) (2-day total: $28,600)
