Peter McFerrin on Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

Peter McFerrin has now won twice as many games in regular play as his Illinois Scholastic Bowl teammate Yogesh Raut, but I’d certainly be hard-pressed to say that Peter is twice as good at Jeopardy! as Yogesh is. (Quite frankly, I’d be hard-pressed to say that anyone is twice as good at Jeopardy! as Yogesh is.) In any case, Peter goes for victory number seven today against Wilson Li and Dan Laine.

Correct response: What is hypnosis?

More Information About Final Jeopardy!:

The modern scientific history of hyponsis, according to Britannica, began in the late 18th century by German physician Franz Mesmer, who treated patients in Vienna and Paris using it. However, Mesmer was discredited due to his belief that it used an occult force. The term “hypnosis” was coined by James Braid in the 19th century after the Greek god of sleep, Hypnos (brother of Thanatos), to refer to the trance-like state resembling sleep, but is induced by a person (a hypnotist) whose suggestions are accepted by the subject. Many psychoanalysts of the 19th and early 20th century were intrigued by hypnosis, with even Freud studying it, but most ended up rejecting it due to the difficulty in hypnotizing some patients.

Andy’s Thoughts:

  • $2,193 is the lowest winning score in regular play this season, the lowest since Bevin Blaber won $600 on June 19, 2025.
  • I appreciate the judges prompting on just “Augusta” for “Augusta National” today, especially as there is also “Augusta Country Club” next door.
  • Today’s J!6 clues can be found at the monthly archive.
