James Denison on Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

James Denison is a 3-day champion on Jeopardy!, with winnings of over $90,000. With his winnings total, I believe he’s already over 90% to qualify for the Tournament of Champions, and regardless of what happens, he’ll be in Champions Wildcard at the very least. Will he get that coveted guaranteed spot in the Tournament of Champions by winning two more games? Certainly, Chris Kearney and Molly Hackett—your two challengers—will have something to say about that.

James’s Final Jeopardy wagering strategy has certainly been the subject of debate since the beginning of his run, with some pundits calling it a “calculated risk” and others “strategically foolish.” While I made my thoughts on the matter clear yesterday, I should reiterate: I believe that the amount of money hoped to gain—if things go perfectly, maybe an extra few thousand dollars—is not worth the risk of having your run end before reaching, say, 10 wins. The extra abilities to earn money from the show from the upper echelon of champions—even the bye into the semi-final of the Tournament of Champions increases your near-term potential winnings significantly—makes it worth sticking around for a long regular-play run on the show. Oftentimes, a champion has been saved by a trailing player making a sub-optimal bet in Final Jeopardy that will guarantee victory for the player leading, and James is currently deciding to risk that happening to him.

Final Jeopardy! Category: Military Installations

Final Jeopardy! Clue: Home to dry lake beds in the Mojave, it was once known as Muroc Field & later renamed for a test pilot who died in a crash

Correct response: What is Edwards Air Force Base?

More Information About Final Jeopardy!:

Known today as a landing site for the Space Shuttle and the location where Chuck Yeager’s flight in the Bell X-1 that first broke the sound barrier took place, Edwards Air Force Base was renamed in 1949 in honor of Glen Edwards, a test pilot who had perished in an accident in May 1948 while testing the Northrop YB-49. As the base was the hub of experimental flight research, it was decided to rename the base after someone who had given their life to the cause, and Edwards was chosen.

One interesting tidbit about the life of Glen Edwards: He was born in Medicine Hat, Alberta—his family didn’t move to the United States until he was a teenager. I just found it interesting that one of America’s major Air Force bases was named after an immigrant, that’s all.

Game Recap & Tonight’s Game Stats:

Looking to find out who won Jeopardy! today? Here’s the Wednesday, March 11, 2026 Jeopardy! by the numbers, along with a recap:

Jeopardy! Round:

(Categories: Fun Place Names; Bundle Up!; Hyphenated Adjectives; The Wurst Of Times; History; Picture The Music Makers)

Ken is definitely going to be accused of jinxing James here with the reference to Daily Double stats; James missed his first Daily Double in the opening segment, falling back to $0. That didn’t stop him from retaking the lead by the interviews, though; scores at the break were James $1,800 Chris $600 Molly $600.

Statistics at the first break (15 clues):

James 8 correct 2 incorrect
Molly 2 correct 1 incorrect
Chris 2 correct 1 incorrect

Today’s interviews:

Molly writes poems on the spot for people in New York.
Chris was a track and cross-country runner who ran long-distance relays after graduation.
James has worn a different pin every game.

James picked up another 7 correct after the break to extend his lead. On the opening board, James went 3/5 in place names, bundling up, wurst, and history.

Statistics after the Jeopardy round:

James 15 correct 3 incorrect
Chris 6 correct 2 incorrect
Molly 5 correct 1 incorrect

Scores after the Jeopardy! Round:

James $4,200
Chris $2,600
Molly $1,600

Double Jeopardy! Round:

(Categories: Recurring Characters; “U” Said It; Med. Abbrev.; Set In France; Parades; Triple Rhyme Time)

Molly had her moment early in Double Jeopardy, finding both Daily Doubles before either opponent could get a selection in. She went conservative on the last one, though, leaving $1,600 on the table, and struggled with some incorrect responses over the last two-thirds of the round. James did well enough to go from third place to the lead by round’s end, having a “crush”-sized lead for the second day in a row. On the second board, Molly went 3/5 in things set in France, while Chris went 3/5 in “U” Said It and James had a crucial 3/5 in Triple Rhyme Time at the end of the round to pull out a lead.

Statistics after Double Jeopardy:

James 22 correct 3 incorrect
Chris 15 correct 4 incorrect
Molly 10 correct 5 incorrect
Total number of unplayed clues this season: 9 (0 today).

Scores going into Final:

James $13,800
Chris $8,600
Molly $2,400

It was a very good thing that James had that “crush”-sized lead entering Final, as Final Jeopardy was a Triple Stumper for the second day running. Thus, James was able to take another victory on the strength of his lead entering Final Jeopardy. He goes for win #5 tomorrow!

Tonight’s results:

Molly $2,400 – $101 = $2,299 (What is goose?)
Chris $8,600 – $3,799 = $4,801 (What is Yeager?)
James $13,800 – $5,199 = $8,601 (What is Yeager?) (4-day total: $99,400)

James Denison, today's Jeopardy! winner (for the March 11, 2026 game.)

Andy’s Thoughts:

Final Jeopardy! wagering suggestions:

(Scores: James $13,800 Chris $8,600 Molly $2,400)

James: Standard cover bet is $3,401. My thoughts the last few days have made it very clear how I feel about betting more than this. (Actual bet: $5,199)

Chris: You have to bet at least $1,800 to have any chance of winning. A bet here between $1,800 and $3,799 keeps Molly locked out. (Actual bet: $3,799)

Molly: You’d need an overbet from both James and Chris to have any chance. Bet whatever you like—but I’d probably consider somewhere between $1,000 and $2,398 as Chris’s three most likely bets that bring you back into contention are $5,201, $8,600, and $8,599—and this gives you the best chance of second place with all three of those bets. (Actual bet: $101)
