Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

The 2025 Jeopardy! postseason continues along with the opening game of Champions Wildcard, where 13 players who fell just short of ToC qualification join Second Chance winners Will Yancey and Drew Goins in this week’s quarterfinals. Longtime fans might be excited to see the return of tournament wildcards for the first time since the 2021 Professor’s Tournament. For those who need a refresher: the 5 quarterfinal winners and top 4 nonwinning scores advance to next week’s semifinals. Our first quarterfinal features Will Yancey, Paul Clauson, and Jen Feldman; while I already mentioned Will as having advanced from Second Chance, both Paul and Jen were 2-game champions over the past year. In my preview, I did note that both Will and Paul had been stronger on the signaling device; I also implied that Jen’s play tended to be more consistent in stating that the prediction model thought she had a good chance of a wild card. It will be interesting to see how the week plays out.

Finally, there are pre-emptions today if you watch the show on ABC at 7:30 PM Eastern or later, due to ABC’s coverage of the Minnesota Vikings–Los Angeles Rams game. Check local listings—or, if you would like, Matt Carberry’s Google Sheet.

Officially valued at one pound, the historic English sovereign was originally minted by King Henry VII, and was a bullion coin (more an investment piece instead of circulating currency). It was called a sovereign due to its portrait of the monarch on its obverse face. Weighing one-half a troy ounce and consisting of first 23-karat, then 22-karat gold, this version of the sovereign existed until 1604 when James I called the coin a “unite” to recognize the unification of the Scottish and English thrones; the name sovereign was used again to refer to a one pound (20 shilling) coin in 1817.

In an absolutely correct ruling by Ken and the show, Paul missed another True Daily Double by adding an “S” to a title that also made the response incorrect based on what information was given in the clue. Jen found DD3, but her only incorrect response of the round saw her lose $3,000. She held a $400 lead over Will going into Final—and with scores slightly lower, it’s going to be very interesting betting in Final because of the four wild cards.

Andy’s Thoughts:

• Ken’s opening statement where he said 1 spot was available leads me to believe that none of the contestants were aware of Lisa Ann Walter’s withdrawal from the Tournament of Champions, and thus they would be playing to win in the final.
• I generally don’t post wagering suggestions where wild cards are in play, because oftentimes a more conservative bet can be called for because of wild cards.
• It is also my belief that any criticism of the game’s second Daily Double is invalid. Ken specifically explained why Paul’s response was incorrect, and saying “we want the title” is, in my opinion, completely superfluous. Of course, these words will never make it onto subreddit due to the tortious interference that the r/Jeopardy moderators have undertaken over the past few months.
