Andy’s Pregame Thoughts: Now that Matt is chasing Ken Jennings’ 74 wins (having passed James Holzhauer’s 32 on Friday), a lot of people are starting to wonder when (or even if) Matt will lose. On Jeopardy!, everybody loses eventually, it’s just a matter of when. When you reach a certain skill level (the skill level that players like Ken, Matt, or James are at), it’s really just a matter of when you catch the unlucky break. James happened to catch his unlucky break in his 33rd game. We don’t know yet when that will happen for Matt, but it will happen. I still think it is most likely to happen on a Monday (before he’s picked up his timing again) or a Friday (as he tires), but it could happen any day.
PSA: The best way to keep COVID-19 at bay (and keep Jeopardy! producing new episodes) is for everybody to get their vaccinations as soon as they are able to. When wearing a mask, ensure that your mask covers both your nose and your mouth.

Correct response: Who is Niccolò Machiavelli?

Niccolò Machiavelli is an Italian diplomat and philosopher best known today for his 1513 work The Prince (Il Principe) which provides a controversial justification for using violence in state-building, becoming well-known for the saying “the ends justify the means” (namely, if the end result is seen as beneficial, the methods used to reach those ends should be seen as acceptable.) The adjective “Machiavellian” was coined to describe such a ruler.
The 1503 Macchiavelli work referred to in the clue was titled On the Method of Dealing with the Rebellious Peoples of Valdichiana.
