Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Fine Art) for Wednesday, October 11, 2023 (Season 40, Game 23):

An early owner of this 1889 painting full of blue & green noted how well the artist “understood the exquisite nature of flowers!”

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:

Karla Fossett, a senior content administrator from Saco, Maine

Karla Fossett on Jeopardy!

Robert Won, a math professor from Washington, D.C.

Robert Won on Jeopardy!

Sam Stapleton, a college consultant from Los Gatos, California

Sam Stapleton on Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

Today sees Quarterfinal #8 of Champions Wildcard; Sam Stapleton, Robert Won, and Karla Fossett return to the Alex Trebek Stage. Of today’s three players, Robert was a very strong player in his initial games who got unlucky in his second game on the show. Certainly, I would not be surprised if he performed strongly in this one! Of course, everyone has had a layoff and things can be much different this time around–anything can happen!

Also, a reminder that Celebrity Jeopardy airs tonight at 8:00 (7:00 Central) on ABC; tonight’s matchup features Christopher Meloni (who has two games’ worth of experience, from 2006 and 2009), Sherri Shepherd, and Katie Nolan.

Correct response: What is Irises?

Vincent Van Gogh's painting
Vincent Van Gogh’s “Irises”. Courtesy: The J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles

Almost immediately after entering a mental health treatment facility in Saint-Rémy, France in 1889, Vincent Van Gogh began a prolific career period, producing nearly 130 paintings. Inspired by the flowers in the facility’s garden, Irises was one of the first produced. The “understood the exquisite nature of flowers” comment in the clue came from French art critic Octave Mirbeau, who owned the painting from 1892–1905.

As this painting is in the J. Paul Getty Museum collection in Los Angeles, it is quite possible that this Final could result in a “Slumdog Millionaire” moment for a contestant who chose to go to the Getty in L.A. before taping.

Andy’s Thoughts:

  • Viewers are reminded of the following sections of the Site Comment Policy: “The judges have the ability to isolate contestant audio and are always willing to stop tape to confirm.” and “This sort of behavior [complaining that the judges credited an incorrect pronunciation] is akin to those who used to call into the PGA Tour with rules violations. It’s incredibly gauche.”

  • Today’s box score: Octobert 11, 2023 Box Score.

Final Jeopardy! wagering suggestions:

(Scores: Sam $30,800 Karla $7,600 Robert $4,600)

Sam: Limit your bet to $15,599; but there’s really no reason to make any bet. (Actual bet: $0)

Robert: Bet at least $1,400 to have the best shot at second place. (Actual bet: $0)

Karla: Cover bet over Robert is $1,601. (Actual bet: $7,600)
