This work was published about six months prior to Darwin’s death in 1882 and had been inspired by a visit to his uncle Josiah Wedgwood (the son of the founder of Wedgwood china) many decades prior, where earthworms had turned lime and cinders into loamy soil. It sold thousands of copies in its first few weeks.
