Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Actresses & Their Roles) for Tuesday, May 9, 2023 (Season 39, Game 172):

She made her big screen debut as a teen named Laurie in a 1978 film & in 2022 she played that role for the 7th & last time

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:

Joe Forti, a project manager originally from Windham, New Hampshire
Joe Forti on Jeopardy!
Raquel Matta, a copy editor from San Pablo, California
Raquel Matta on Jeopardy!
Hannah Wilson, a data scientist from Chicago, Illinois (4-day total: $124,801)
Hannah Wilson on Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

Hannah Wilson of Chicago won her 4th game last night and has been averaging over $30,000 an episode. Regardless of what happens from here on out, I definitely think that Hannah is very capable of both a good regular-play run as well as a Tournament of Champions run. Today's challengers are Raquel Matta and Joe Forte; Raquel was a contestant on Sports Jeopardy! back in 2016.

PSA: The best way to keep COVID-19 at bay (and keep Jeopardy! producing new episodes) is for everybody to get their vaccinations as soon as they can, including any boosters as recommended. When wearing a mask, please ensure that your mask covers both your nose and your mouth.

Jamie Lee Curtis, daughter of Janet Leigh and Tony Curtis one of the famed modern "scream queens", had a few guest roles on TV shows in the late 1970s, but she came to prominence with her first film role as Laurie Strode in John Carpenter's horror film Halloween. The film, a massive box-office success, saw Curtis reprise her role over half a dozen times.

I quite like this Final Jeopardy! clue—it's one of those clues that both has a modern angle (the reference to 2022s Halloween Ends) as well as feeling like it would be a worthy Final Jeopardy! clue in any of the show's 39 seasons.

(Categories: Presidents Who Served; Burt Bacharach; Isthmus Be The Place; Novels; What’s That Smell?; A “Run” For Your Money)

Good news for Raquel: She found both Daily Doubles back-to-back! Bad news for Raquel: She got the second one incorrect. However, she did very well on the Burt Bacharach category to ensure the game wasn’t a runaway going into Final!

Statistics after Double Jeopardy:

Hannah 29 correct 3 incorrect

Joe 10 correct 2 incorrect
Total number of unplayed clues this season: 26 (0 today).

Scores going into Final:

Raquel $14,400
Joe $5,800

Joe and Raquel were the only two to get Final correct; normally that would be it for Hannah, but Raquel didn’t bet enough! Hannah survives her fifth victory and will be back tomorrow!

Tonight’s results:

Joe $5,800 + $5,798 = $11,598 (Who is Jamie Lee Curtis?)
Raquel $14,400 + $8,000 = $22,400 (Who is Jamie Lee Curtis?)
Hannah $26,000 – $3,000 = $23,000 (Who is Leigh?) (5-day total: $147,801)

Andy’s Thoughts:

  • I’ve already said what I need to in my recap above regarding Raquel’s bet; however, this also demonstrates why it’s not a good idea to make anything higher than the standard cover bet out of the lead.
  • Today’s box score: May 9, 2023 Box Score.

Final Jeopardy! wagering suggestions:

(Scores: Hannah $26,000 Raquel $14,400 Joe $5,800)

Hannah: Standard cover bet over Raquel is $2,801. (Actual bet: $3,000)

Raquel: You must bet at least $8,801 to have any chance of winning. (Actual bet: $8,000)

Joe: Limit your bet to $199; that way, if Raquel makes her minimum suggested bet, you stay ahead of her. (Actual bet: $5,798)

  1. Didn’t realize that was her big screen debut, but remembering she reprised the role in a much sequeled movie, it was the only guess I had. May have also helped that I just re-watched Trading Places on a plane back from Peru on Sunday, so she was fresh in my head.

    • I figured it was some kind of horror film series, which is not at all in my wheelhouse – but for some reason thought of the Scream franchise and guessed Courtney Cox (???)
Trading Places was a great movie – I’ve watched it many times.

Huh… I was expecting something different after the recent batch of stumpers on the syndicated show. Seems like an easy one to me🤷

  3. Trevor M | May 9, 2023 at 9:23 am |

It definitely helps too that she has seen recent Oscar success outside the franchise, so her name is more in the recent public sphere.

  4. Talk about the importance of final jeopardy wagers oh man what a shocking turn of events in final jeopardy.

  5. I also like this FJ clue, although I agree that it will probably be a triple get, due to all the publicity Jamie Lee Curtis has received lately. The best FJ clues are those where exactly one contestant gets it right. Difficult for the writers to predict of course.

  6. With the answer of ‘Leigh’, I can only guess she blanked on the name but remembered her mother – else it was a big coincidence.

    • I assume she was going for Jennifer Jason Leigh.

      • I think you are probably correct. I don’t think many would get the two actresses themselves mixed up (even though they both have famous actor parents), but mixing up their names is something different, especially if you are not “into” the type of movie franchises exemplified by Halloween and Friday the 13th (whose VILLAIN was named Jason!)

        • In the first Friday the 13th movie, Jason’s mother was the villain. It wasn’t ’til the sequels that he became the villain.

          • You caught me, I am one who is not “into” the horror genre exemplified by Halloween and Friday the 13th [though I do like some kinds of horror] so have only seen ads and references, not any of the actual movies. However, I meant that ‘Jason’ is famous from the Friday the 13th franchise, meaning repeatedly in ads for (and references to) those sequels such that in trying to think of Jamie Lee Curtis, someone not much familiar with that particular horror genre could have come up with Jennifer Jason Leigh because they had ‘Jason’ in the back of their mind due to the Friday the 13th franchise without realizing why. [And I really didn’t even think “villain” was the best word, I just got tired of trying to think of something more fitting than “monster”.]

Now I can [JK] accuse you of telling me (if no one else) a spoiler 😉.

  7. Wow. Sometimes you need a little luck to put together a long streak. On the other hand, losing the game would have also been unlucky given that it looked like she had a runaway until the last moment.

With a lucky break like this, I’m thinking this sets up for a Hannah versus Ben showdown to start next week.

Re: Raquel’s wager…Just the coulda-woulda-shoulda of losing in such a way…how do you recover from something like that? Therapy? Medication? Both?

    • S Gail Skvarenina | May 9, 2023 at 6:42 pm |

As John Belushi’s Animal House character said to Flounder, after they wrecked his brother’s car: My advice to you is to drink heavily.

  9. I agree with Mark0 re:Leigh, with Gregory re: Everything Everywhere, and with the fact that ALL final wagers should be based on Andy’s guidance. I can’t deal with bad bar trivia loss, how do you deal with that kind of Jeopardy loss!

  10. Something made me think horror, and 1978 meant Halloween, which meant recent Oscar winner Jamie Lee Curtis (Everything Everywhere All at Once is awesome). I liked the clue requiring you do to that math and I pulled it out. Hannah survived a miracle because Raquel didn’t want to win for some reason (or did the math wrong). This is another case in point that people really need to read the literature on wagering.

  11. I think it is better to bet to get $1 more than the person in the lead (assuming 3rd place can’t catch you). If they bet 0 and you expected them to bet to cover then you still lose. I am sure that isn’t always true, but it is generally true.
