This game’s Jeopardy! Masters contestants:
Matt Amodio, a postdoctoral researcher from Cambridge, Massachusetts (0 points)![]() |
James Holzhauer, a self-described game show villain from Las Vegas, Nevada (3 points)![]() |
Andrew He, a software developer from San Francisco, California (3 points)![]() |
Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:
After their victories last night, James Holzhauer and Andrew He will lock horns; today’s game will absolutely come down to the Daily Doubles, who finds them, and when. Unfortunately, Matt Amodio probably got the worst possible draw for the second night—he seemed to be lacking confidence, and having to play James Holzhauer and Andrew He will likely not be particularly helpful for his buzzer timing or his confidence. If Matt was to pull out a result—and he’s certainly capable of doing so—it would be huge for his Masters chances.
PSA: The best way to keep COVID-19 at bay (and keep Jeopardy! producing new episodes) is for everybody to get their vaccinations as soon as they can, including any boosters as recommended. When wearing a mask, please ensure that your mask covers both your nose and your mouth.

- If this wasn’t the greatest single game of Jeopardy! ever played, I don’t know what is.

I’m pulling for Matt in this tournament so you can imagine my excitement when he pulled through with this epic win. I can’t wait to watch tomorrow’s games!!
Love to see Matt get his buzzer mojo back.
I checked the box scores, and he actually had the most buzzer attempts of all players yesterday (50), but only got in 28% of the time compared to Amy’s 39& and Andrew’s 57%(!).
He’s too good to go quietly here, so it’s awesome to see him make a game of it against James (I’m sure Matt himself enjoyed it too, especially after James needled him on Twitter 😉
With the same six players in 20 consecutive games, moving around in location [podium 1, 2, or 3], after it is all over it would be interesting to compare the buzzer percentages for each player in relation to their podium location each time. Of course that would be affected by the categories and the other two players, but with them all being so well matched, this would be the best time to see if there is even a hint of one buzzer maybe being easier to use than another. I actually think “probably not”, but still, the results would possibly be interesting (or proof to skeptics that that is not the case).
Something similar that I think would be interesting to compare is buzzer skill vs palm size, but I don’t expect to ever get that chance. [I can’t help but think that it plays at least a small element in the number of men winners vs women winners, but some men have kind of petite hands, I guess.]
I love the interplay on these prime time games.Like Mattea’s comment on the Sgt. Schultz ?answer” in today’s first game. And, if anyone thinks these players aren’t taking this Masters competition seriously, just look at Sam’s reaction to a wrong answer in today’s first game, and, James looking like he wanted to kick himself for his wrong responses this game.
In both Final Jeopardys on tonighta ahow, I had no idea. Never read “The Girl With the Dragon Tatoo, and, if I once knew that th4 US had once occupied Hati, I;ve forgotten it.
Re – Haiti occupied by US. I knew it had happened, but I didn’t know when or even think of it. The name of President Sam rang no bells.
Current FJ streak: 2L
I completely and totally echo your comment about where this stands among the greatest games of Jeopardy ever. This is what Masters is all about – amazing gameplay from amazing contestants. This was also the first game to make me scream so loudly that I wouldn’t be totally shocked to receive a noise complaint 🙂
And going off of Twitter, it’s nice to see James and Matt actually develop a bit of a friendship from playing together. It’s awesome to see that all the contestants are getting along and actually becoming friends with each other.
Ken’s comment at the end couldn’t have been more accurate. This was easily the best episode of Jeopardy! ever. Actually, scratch that. Probably the best episode of any syndicated TV game show ever.
Maybe Matt is trying out for a position on ‘The Chase’ 😉.
The only reason this may NOT be the greatest game of all time, is that no one got Final J! correct. And that surprised me! a) Haiti is a republic, just like the US, and has a President, just like the US (since 1805, minus the years in question), and b) When Ken pronounced President Sam’s name DIFFERENTLY than “Uncle Sam” that was a PRETTY clear clue he was going for a French-speaking country. Given the rest of the context, not that hard? Still, the Double J tie (with the top two players each getting a “true” daily double, and coming down to the “easy” clues) was a wowser!
Ken’s pronunciation was the same as the Spanish pronunciation of “Sam”.
The first couple Google responses seemed to imply that “Sam” sounded the same in Spanish or English. Apparently not? It’s “Saam” in both English and French. mea culpa!
I would’ve guessed Panama based upon the timeline near construction of the Canal. Couldn’t really tell French from Spanish there either.
What are the rules for ties in these Master tournaments?
I think James may have had a tiebreaker based on # of correct answers, and I wonder if that affected Matt’s wager.
Just finished the season of the Revolutions podcast on the Haiti last week. Thanks, Mike!
Congrats to both Mattea and Matt for getting the wins they needed to get off the schneid, going back to the TOC. This Masters tournament just got a lot more interesting!
Feels like tonight showed why the Masters tournament exists! Take 6 incredible players, set up the gameplay in such a way that allows for variability etc., and you’ll get a chance to see all of them really shine!
After two games, I’ve concluded one thing: These players are all basically even. I give a slight edge to James as he is the only player who has had the most correct responses in his two games.
Andy, you might want to fix a typo. For the interviews you wrote “Matt would like to think his girlfriend” when I know you meant “thank”.
