Correct response: What is the Swiss Guard?

(The following write-up is original content and is copyright 2024 The Jeopardy! Fan. It may not be copied without linked attribution back to this page.)

The Swiss Guard is best known today as an armed forces unit who protects Vatican City and the Pope. It is called the Swiss Guard as it traditionally consisted of 150 to 200 Swiss mercenaries. Today, the unit consists of 135. Their colors match the House of Medici as they were introduced during the papal reign of Leo X, the first Medici pope.

I was actually surprised to see that this was only the third time that the Swiss Guard has come up in Final Jeopardy; I had the idea that they were a more-asked-about group. Interesting!

Final Jeopardy! wagering suggestions:

Weckiai: Standard cover bet over Matthew is $6,801. (Actual bet: $6,801)

Matthew: You can’t both cover Carrie and win the Double Stumper. If you think Carrie will bet big, go all in. If you think she’ll bet small, bet no more than $400. (Actual bet: $13,200)

Carrie: I would go all in here to force Matthew to cover. (Actual bet: $9,000)

15 Comments on "Today’s Final Jeopardy – Monday, May 6, 2024"

  1. I did not know that the Swiss Guard had a flag. Learn something new every day.

  2. The Swiss Guard seems like an obvious answer.

  3. “What is the Swiss Guard?” I knew that the Swiss Guard was formed in 1506, that they had uniforms striped red, blue, and yellow, and that the Medici had to do with the Papacy. (To be in the Swiss guard, one must be Swiss, Catholic, male, single, and at least 5’8” tall.)

  4. It was Swiss Guard or Knights of Columbus for me..I figured the KOC was too recent so I went with the SG

    • I was thinking Knights Templar – but knew they were earlier than that (thanks to Dan Brown).

  5. I said the papal guard, but I assume that wouldn’t be good enough. The yellow stripes have always looked orange to me, but my color vision is less than perfect.

    • There is no other papal guard nowadays but the Swiss Guard, so it should be good enough.

Regarding orange vs yellow, it is the same issue of lighting as with the [in]famous gold/white/blue/black dress, I think. I’ve looked at a few pictures of the Swiss Guard and depending on the light, folds of the fabric look anything from deep orange to lemon yellow.
I’ve been to Rome (not to Vatican proper because of long lines), and I’ve seen the guard in uniform at the gate, but too long ago to remember what was my real-life impression of the color.
Interestingly, Wikipedia says “The dress uniform is of blue, red, orange and yellow with a distinctly Renaissance appearance.”

  6. When I read the colors, I knew it was the Swiss Guard. Also, the date sounded right.

Begining of a new week, and, a “get” to start off for me. I don’t know that I’ve seen the flag of the Swiss Guard, though maybe I’ve seen their formal uniform once. But something in my just clicked during the writing time, and, I said “What is the Swiss Guard?”
Andy, if only 40% of the daily Jeopardy network are ABC affiliates, why dothe writers have Ken give a promotional announcement about Jeopardy Masters as if the percentage of ABC affiated in the daily Jeopardy network was much higher?

  8. Robert J. Fawkes | May 6, 2024 at 6:42 pm |

The Medici family took me to Italy which took me to Vatican City which made the Swiss Guard an easy get. The date confirmed it. The colors didn’t matter to me. I really thought this would be a triple get.

    • Pretty much my reasoning, too. I did not KNOW the colors but I knew I’d seen them on TV and movies and it seemed about right. So I was happy to be right, even more so when only one of the contestants was correct.

  9. Jeff Bernstein | May 6, 2024 at 9:43 pm |

Just out of curiosity, I watch on an ABC station, and at the end Ken says something like “Watch Masters on this ABC station” What do he say on non ABC stations

  10. The French Foreign Legion occurred to me, too, at almost the same instant that The Swiss Guard did, but I felt the time and location made more sense for the latter.

  11. I did go to Laughlin and wasn’t able to watch any Jeopardy tonight and came here just now and went with The French Foreign Legion, just like our defending champion did. O for last 50! See if I can get any of the FJ’s in Jeopardy Masters correct. 🙂
