Today’s Final Jeopardy – Wednesday, December 4, 2024

Warning: This page contains spoilers for the December 4, 2024, game of Jeopardy! — please do not scroll down if you wish to avoid being spoiled. Please note that the game airs as early as noon Eastern in some U.S. television markets.

Today is also the debut of Pop Culture Jeopardy! This site also has recaps for those three episodes. If you’re looking for those recaps instead: Episode 1 (Pop Queens, Oops! We Guessed It Again, Queen City Kidz); Episode 2 (All That Jazz, Tinker Tailor Quiz Show Guys, Little Pocket Monsters); Episode 3 (Esprit Top 3, Personality Hires, Punny Goddesses).

Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category The 20th Century) for Wednesday, December 4, 2024 (Season 41, Game 63):

This country’s national radio launched in 1925; 14 years later, it fell into a long silence following a piano nocturne

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:

Gloria Nastas, a retired healthcare policy analyst from Troy, Michigan
Gloria Nastas on Jeopardy!
Kimberley Debus, a Unitarian Univeralist minister from Takoma Park, Maryland
Kimberley Debus on Jeopardy!
Stevie Ruiz, an assistant front office manager from Montauk, New York (1-day total: $17,987)
Stevie Ruiz on Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

After a very strong game yesterday, Stevie Ruiz is your new champion; he goes for victory #2 today against minister Kimberley Debus and retired policy analyst Gloria Nastas.

Today is also the debut of Pop Culture Jeopardy! hosted by Colin Jost. I’ve watched the first three episodes—they were, surprisingly to me, available in Canada—and recaps will be posted between 10:00 AM and 10:05 AM Eastern. In terms of what I think of the series: I think the vibe is perfect for a pop culture version of the show, but that vibe would cause a riot amongst longtime fans if it ever came over to Original Recipe Jeopardy. It should also be noted that the syndicated show is shoehorned into 20 minutes, whereas this version has more time to stretch its legs.

Polskie Radio was founded in 1925, but went silent in 1939 for the entirety of World War II after the German invasion of the country in September of that year. The final song played before shutdown was Chopin’s “Nocturne in C-sharp minor, Op. posth.”; the same song was played on the resumption of broadcasting after the war in 1945. Władysław Szpilman, the pianist who played both noctures live, was the subject of the 2002 movie The Pianist

Andy’s Thoughts:

  • On that last Daily Double, the play is either “a really small bet to make sure you’re not out of contention” or “bet to take the lead”—not something in the middle.
  • Today’s box score will be linked to when posted by the show.

8 Comments on "Today’s Final Jeopardy – Wednesday, December 4, 2024"

  1. Poland was my guess given that Poland was invaded in 1939, and I thought there was a good chance the nocturne was written by Chopin – and Chopin was born in Poland.

  2. Yeah, I also guested Poland, thinking of Chopin and Paderewski. There’s also “Warsaw Concerto,” which people seem to love or hate. I love it, even though it’s movie music.

    • “Warsaw Concerto” was composed by Richard Addinsell, who was British.

      • Yes I know, but it was composed for the film “Dangerous Moonlight,” which is about a Polish pianist who becomes a fighter pilot against the Nazis. A bit of a stretch, I admit. I probably should have quit with Chopin. Thanks for your comment.

  3. Reading the clue answer for today’s Final Jeopardy, it just “screamed” to be that “What is Poland?” would be the correct response. The occupation of Poland by Nazi Germany certainly fit, piano pieces somehow made me think of Chopin, though I’m not really musically aware, but knew he was a “hero” of Poland, so that fit as well. Thankfull that I not only had the correct response, but that my thoughts as to why Poland was the correct response were right as well.

My thought process was what significant thing happened 14 years after 1925. Adding 14 to 1925 made it 1939. Germany invaded Poland in 1939 so that made sense to me. It didn’t hurt that my maternal grandmother was from Poland so that also helped.

  5. Why did Ken prompt ‘Remember your phrasing on au courant answer? Seems unfair to the other contestants and not consistent when others forgot to phrase in form of question.
