Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category 20th Century History) for Wednesday, April 23, 2025 (Season 41, Game 163):
A 1919 Punch cartoon titled “The Gap in the Bridge” showed Uncle Sam sleeping on the missing keystone of this
(correct response beneath the contestants)
Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:
Eric Cordova, a compliance specialist from Chicago, Illinois![]() |
Abigail Arnold, an academic administrator from Waltham, Massachusetts![]() |
Liam Starnes, an undergraduate student from Barrington, Illinois (3-day total: $72,202)![]() |
Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:
UChicago undergrad Liam Starnes, sitting with a 71.63% chance of qualifying for the Tournament of Champions right now, faces of against Abigail Arnold and Eric Cordova in search of victory #4.
I have seen the articles comparing Liam to a certain fictional character, and I am left wishing a couple of things: firstly, that the fanbase was less cruel; secondly, that certain spaces on the Internet would be more tightly moderated. It’s not fair to any contestant to have their appearance judged in such a fashion, and this mocking can be worn on those who have chosen to moderate their spaces less aggressively, including those who administer the various Facebook groups on that site.
Furthermore in Jeopardy! news, the Celebrity Jeopardy! final, between W. Kamau Bell, Robin Thede, and Dave Friedberg, also airs this evening at 9:00 (8:00 Central) on ABC in the United States and CTV2 in Canada.

Correct response: What is the League of Nations?

Despite Woodrow Wilson including the League of Nations—essentially, a precursor to the modern United Nations—as a suggestion in his Fourteen Points at the conclusion of World War I, Senate Republicans blocked American entry into the League. The cartoon, which appeared in Punch in December 1919, mocked the Americans as asleep.
Needless to say, without American involvement, the League of Nations quickly proved to be ineffective at preventing World War II. Today, in the face of further American isolationism, many nations—Canada, included—are choosing to turn its back on America.

Andy’s Thoughts:
- Liam is now 97.19% to qualify for the Tournament of Champions.
- In defense of Abigail ringing in on the final clue of Double Jeopardy: the scores at that point were potentially close enough to an important wagering breakpoint such that it was important for Abigail to potentially pick up as much money as possible going into Final. Getting upset at her over this is inappropriate fan behavior and should not happen.
- Today’s box score will be linked to when posted by the show.
Final Jeopardy! wagering suggestions:
(Scores: Liam $18,800 Abigail $14,000 Eric $0)
Liam: Standard cover bet today is $9,201. (Actual bet: $9,201)
Abigail: Bet no more than $4,400 and hope for a miss from Liam. (Actual bet: $4,801)
Eric: (By rule, did not participate in Final Jeopardy)

I took keystone too literally and was thinking of some sort of arch.
I’ve never seen this cartoon, but the year and the image of Uncle Sam asleep led me to the League of Nations.
Same here (after starting for a few seconds, like MarkO, trying to think of a famous actual keystone).
Sadly for my chances of making it four FJ gets in a row, almost like MarkO, I took “bridge” too literally and went with the Golden Gate Bridge. Ah well – three in a row is still something to be proud of for me. 🙂
and you had good company in your incorrect response.
I took keystone literally, jumped to Pennsylvania in my mind, and ended up at a wall.
Looking at the cartoon, Uncle Sam appears to be smoking a cigarette, not sleeping.
Woof, that’s some rough math on the final wager. It’s a part that I think if I ever were in the same spot I would mess up, even having read the math suggestions.
in that spot, if I’m in second, I’m going to assume first is wagering to lock me out, so I’ll play for the double miss. And to not even risk screwing up the math, I’ll probably wager zero.
Even if I had noted the reference to Punch (a British humor magazine, I think) I still would have missed this Final Jeopardy,
Liam does kind of sorta look like the xharacter who’s catch phrase is “what me worry?” though I hadn’t noticed until Andy reported on others saying it. My reaction to Liam’s appearance is that he has a “babyface;
IF I hadn’t heard Ken and Liam discussing Liam’s National Quiz Bowl accomplishments, I’d have to Google that acroym Andy used is conddensing today’s interview with Liam.
Hey, Bill. Rather than the character you mentioned, I thought Liam looked more like the Sheldon character from “Big Bang Theory.” Personally, I would take that as a compliment since he was a supposed genius and extremely popular as well as winning four Emmy awards. Liam seems to have a bit of genius in him, too, as he has demonstrated with four “Jeopardy!” wins, so far. I don’t really see how it’s a bad thing to be compared favorably to Sheldon actor Jim Parsons.
Yours had been my thought, too, though not close enough for Liam to be able to get a side-gig as a Sheldon impersonator.
Speaking of impersonators, my kids loved Pee-Wee Herman and about two years into Pee-Wee’s Playhouse, we took them to a free appearance by “Pee-Wee” at a new shopping center in Nashville, thinking they were too young to distinguish it was an impersonator. They loved it, but years later when I learned that Paul Ruben’s sister’s law career was in Nashville, it made me wonder if it could possibly have actually been him, done as a favor to someone while visiting her (or maybe just to be able to write-off travel expenses that were really for a “family” trip).
This is the comparison to which Andy refers. The context that I didn’t have – and should have obtained before incorrectly dismissing his objection as an overreaction – is that the Sheldon Cooper character is associated with autism by many. So it’s understandable that likening Liam to Sheldon would be interpreted as either or both of implying Liam has autism or disparaging those who do. This is a link to a writing by a mother of an autistic child which helped me to better understand this.

I got to League of Nations immediately, but then starting thinking about what structure could represent the LoN, since it doesn’t have a literal keystone. Knowing negotiations happened in Paris, I settled on Pont Neuf. Going by the cartoon itself the correct response should’ve technically been “League of Nations Bridge”. I do think the clue should’ve ended with something like “a structure representing this”.
Agree that those upset by the last clue should not direct their ire at Abigail. It’s not Abigails’s responsibility to do anything but play to win, and the show could just let players with zero or negative dollars play FJ with an obligatory $0 bet.
I went the bridge route and went with the Francis Scott Key Bridge. Oops!
I believe that Abigail played a real strong game and think that she’s a great candidate for Second Chance.
And retro congrats to Liam on win #4. We’ve seen a plethora of really good players lately.
Will we get a 5th and TOC locking win for Liam tomorrow? I’m looking forward to seeing if it happens. 🙂
