Today’s contestants:
Mike Parkinson, a nonexecutive director from Surrey![]() |
Gill Woon, a retired learning coach from North London![]() |
Dan Afshar, an events manager from Kingston upon Thames (6-day total: £20,400)![]() |
Andy’s Pre-Game Thoughts:
How long will Dan Afshar’s run last? That is the biggest question on many minds right now; he picked up victory #6 yesterday. Today, he goes for win #7 against Surrey’s Mike Parkinson and North London’s Gill Woon.
As of right now, Dan is at 268 correct responses over his first six games; if he does get to 300, he will earn a place in this site’s “300 Club”. I would say that the chances are reasonable that he might do so today, regardless of whether he wins or loses.

I know almost nothing about art in general and even less about sculptures, but The Thinker showed up pretty prominently in one of my favorite books as a kid, so much so that I eventually bothered to look it up. In my mind, “Rodin” + “muscular” + “sitting in a garden” should lead right to The Thinker. Glad to see that logic proved successful!
I find it interesting that Dan chose to trust that his buzzer dominance would continue over the last four clues of Double rather than try to lock the game up right then and there on DD4; there’s been a lot of cases over here where a challenger who’s just barely locked out with a few clues to go gathers some momentum on the final few clues and is able to prevent a lock by the skin of their teeth and win on a single-get Final as a result. Obviously, it worked out for him in this instance, but I don’t think it’s what I personally would have done. (No disrespect whatsoever is meant to Dan, who is still an absolutely fantastic player – and after all, only a few dozen people here in America can claim that they are a 7-day Jeopardy champion, and God knows I can’t claim that! I also don’t think it was a strategic blunder by any means; maybe a little risky, but Dan clearly was able to back up his trust in himself!)
Dan owes Abby a drink, dinner or holiday card after her wager on Dan #1 set him up to begin his run of wins.
Wow, yes, I’d forgotten about that, Mark! On that point, and also yours, MasterDoge, it feels as though contestants’ wagering strategies in this series have been quite unusual generally. So far this year in the UK, no-one leading going into FJ has wagered the standard cover bet (granted, there is quite a small sample size, made smaller as there have been several runaways lately). By contrast, some contestants last year had clearly studied Jeopardy wagering strategy – in fact in the very first episode of this UK revival in 2024, the episode winner executed a perfect cover wager. However the general knowledge skills of the contestants has been superb across the board in both series.
Congratulations again to Dan, another great game for everyone. Thinking back to Andy’s comment yesterday about Dan’s excellent buzzer speed, it’s striking that he has also been very successful in Mastermind, which doesn’t require buzzer skills (and in Only Connect, which is more of a puzzle game) – he is a real all rounder. A fantastic player as you say, MasterDoge.
Another successful guess for me in FJ, similar thought process to MasterDoge.
I wouldn’t even call my response a guess. I was certain that it was ‘The Thinker’ because besides it occurring over and over in trivia, I came to know it well at an early age due to a replica of it being featured repeatedly on ‘The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis’ (1959-1963).
