Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

Today’s first quarterfinal is being contested between Beauty and the Beasts (Episode 6’s winners), South Shore Squad (Episode 4’s winners), and Glazed and Confused (Episode 9’s winners).

One thing I always tend to point out from a strategy perspective: Beauty and the Beasts were one of two Knockout Round winners not to make a cover bet in Final Jeopardy. Having many friends who competed in the Knockout Round, I received some background information about how the tapings worked in an effort to figure out what other games the players might have seen. And from what I learned, there is no guarantee that the other teams today would have seen Beauty and the Beasts’s opening-round game. However, the semifinalists would definitely have seen each of their opponents’s quarterfinals—this means that you might not see other teams changing their own strategy in Final to compensate, at least not in this round.

In order to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the movie Bonnie and Clyde, its two stars, Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway, were at the Oscars to present the award for Best Picture. Warren Beatty got handed the wrong envelope by the accountants, being handed the backup envelope for Emma Stone’s Best Actress victory, and the rest is history—the biggest fiasco in Oscar history, where La La Land was announced as Best Picture when Moonlight had actually won.

Game Recap & Tonight’s Game Stats:

Here’s the recap for Season 1, Episode 28:

Jeopardy! Round:

(Categories: A Dark View Of The Film; Brit, Lit; Anthems At The Game; Pop Nerd Websites; Shout It Out; It Was The ’90s!)

While Beauty and the Beasts got the Daily Double correct, it was Glazed and Confused who led at the interviews on the strength of a swept Triple Play. After 16 clues, the scores were Glazed 4,400 South Shore 3,200 Beauty 3,200.

Statistics at the first break (16 clues):

Glazed and Confused 9 correct 3 incorrect
South Shore Squad 4 correct 0 incorrect
Beauty and the Beasts 4 correct 0 incorrect

Today’s interviews:

Glazed and Confused thinks it’s gratifying for Alex to win after finishing second in regular Jeopardy.
South Shore Squad is taping the day before Amy’s 40th birthday; she usually throws a murder mystery party.
Beauty and the Beasts has collectively seen Lady Gaga 30 times.

All three teams continued to play well as Glazed and Confused led by just 200—and everyone separated by just 1200—after 30 clues.

Statistics after the Jeopardy round:

Glazed and Confused 13 correct 4 incorrect
Beauty and the Beasts 8 correct 0 incorrect
South Shore Squad 10 correct 0 incorrect

Scores after the Jeopardy! Round:

Glazed and Confused 6,400
Beauty and the Beasts 6,200
South Shore Squad 5,200

Double Jeopardy! Round:

(Categories: Let’s Just Go With It; Talk Show Hosts; No Hair Don’t Care; Designing Women; Eateries, Real & Imagined; Down Under Creatures, Mate)

Glazed and South Shore picked up the Daily Doubles; however, the story of this round was Glazed and Confused’s deep knowledge—they were correct five times at the 1,600 level and four more at 2,000. Some confusion on the Triple Play by the players—first with South Shore Squad getting tripped up by ordering, then with no team being able to remember who replaced Jon Stewart on the Daily Show, meant we still had something to play for going into Final.

Statistics after Double Jeopardy:

Glazed and Confused 32 correct 5 incorrect
South Shore Squad 19 correct 1 incorrect
Beauty and the Beasts 10 correct 2 incorrect

Scores going into Final:

Glazed and Confused 30,600
South Shore Squad 16,800
Beauty and the Beasts 7,000

South Shore Squad was the only team to get Final Jeopardy, and that makes them a semifinalist! Our two losing quarterfinal teams get $10,000 apiece.

Tonight’s results:

Beauty and the Beasts 7,000 – 7,000 = 0 (What)
South Shore Squad 16,800 + 16,799 = 33,599 (What is Bonnie + Clyde?) (Semi-Finalist)
Glazed and Confused 30,600 – 3,001 = 27,599 (What is Snow White?)

South Shore Squad, today's Pop Culture Jeopardy winners (for February 5, 2025, episode 28.)

5 Comments on "Pop Culture Jeopardy Recap – Wednesday, February 5, 2025 (Episode 28)"

  1. The fact that “Bonnie and Clyde” was a correct response on last night’s regular show, naming Beatty and Dunaway in the clue, helped me tremendously in responding correctly to this Final Jeopardy.

  2. Christopher Denault | February 5, 2025 at 2:22 pm |

Glazed and Confused’s answer of “Snow White” must have been because of the disastrous Rob Lowe-Snow White musical number that opened the 1989 Oscars.

Not a bad guess at all, considering that movie came out in 1937, 52 years before the Oscars musical number. I wonder if the writers even had that in mind, as this question nearly had two right answers by accident.

    • Apparently they had to stop taping for 10 minutes to confirm that Snow White wasn’t also a correct response.

    • I also thought ‘Snow White’ was a good guess. My guess was ‘The Godfather’ (which was the 50th anniversary commemoration in 2022) due to Will Smith’s slap. [As for the LaLaLand/Moonlight mix-up, I would not have labeled that a fiasco, but I can see how some would and thus would not argue the point.]

  3. Does the “$10,000 apiece” mean “per contestant” or “per team”?
