This game’s Jeopardy! Masters contestants:
Juveria Zaheer, a psychiatrist from Whitby, Ontario, Canada![]() |
Yogesh Raut, an educational blogger, podcast host & writer originally from Springfield, Illinois![]() |
Victoria Groce, a writer from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania![]() |
Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:
At initial publication time, here’s what we know: Victoria Groce will be in the final. It will very likely take an unlikely set of results to eliminate Yogesh Raut from contention, but we won’t know for sure until shortly before this episode starts airing.
I would say at this point that it is probably Victoria’s tournament to lose—with the exception of the opening game, she has been stronger overall than Yogesh has. However, I would also say that high-level Jeopardy! has enough variance to give either Juveria or Isaac a chance at victory as well. (Remember how close Mattea Roach came to defeating James Holzhauer back in 2023?) Anything can happen in this final!
That being said, the Unified Prediction Model currently has Victoria as 46.0% to win a two-game final between Victoria, Yogesh (34.3%), and Juveria (19.7%), 48.9% to win a two-game final between herself, Yogesh (36.8%), and Isaac (14.3%), and 56.2% to win a two-game final against Juveria (25.6%) and Isaac (18.2%).

With his win, Yogesh has now become the sixth regular person to become a Jeopardy! Millionaire, with his career winnings total $1,098,403!
I’m wondering exactly what you mean by “regular person”. I’m guessing maybe you mean someone who did not have a super long winning streak [not even a somewhat long] in his original appearances.
Maybe “regular” simply means “non-celebrity”? The top prize on “Celebrity Jeopardy!” is $1,000,000 (though it goes to charity, not to the winning celebrity).
I did think of that, but Jonathan said “to become a Jeopardy! Millionaire”, so I thought that ruled out games in which the money does not even go to the winning player.
I thoroughly enjoyed this year’s Masters Tournament… and learned a lot about clue selection and wagering.
Thanks to Andy and others for comments and analysis.
That was a fantastic final and well deserved victory. Yogesh upped his game for the final stretch, unfortunate FJ miss notwithstanding.
I hope they work out the formatting flaws and put this tourney on a sustainable footing for the future. I enjoy Masters very much and would like to see it thrive.
(Old) Eric!
I agree with both your comments. I liked the expansion from 6 to 9 playerd but semifinal with 4 resulting in elimination leaving 3 finals doesn’t make much sense to me.
Typo – meant three finalists
I was really surprised by Yogesh’s “Tatars” response. I would have expected the correct peoples to not even occur to someone rather than for them to be remembered with such an “off” pronunciation.
From what I can gather “Tartar” seems to be in disuse in favor of “Tatar” for the people themselves. Webster’s indicates that Tartar “probably” comes from Medieval Latin “tartarus”, and describes the latter as a modification of the Persian Tatar. Which is to say, both terms ultimately come from the Persian, and the distinction is subtle enough that it’s not surprising to me that Yogesh just went with the currently preferred nomenclature.
To be clear, I’m not disputing the ruling. I haven’t seen The Conquerer — I hear it’s awful — but I imagine the usage there clearly pins the clue to “Tartar”.
Ahh, that explains it! Thanks! [with the key part of the clue being about it being heard in that movie in addition to which usage is more tied to the Latin]
