Today’s Final Jeopardy – Monday, April 1, 2024

Warning: This page contains spoilers for the April 1, 2024, game of Jeopardy! — please do not scroll down if you wish to avoid being spoiled. Please note that the game airs as early as noon Eastern in some U.S. television markets.

Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Novel Title Objects) for Monday, April 1, 2024 (Season 40, Game 146):

A girl in a 1950 novel walks into this & “got in among the coats and rubbed her face against them”

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:

Sam Buttrey, a bon vivant & man about town from Pacific Grove, California
Sam Buttrey on Jeopardy!
Colby Burnett, a high school college counselor from Chicago, Illinois
Colby Burnett on Jeopardy!
Lilly Chin, a robotics professor from Decatur, Georgia
Lilly Chin on Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

The Jeopardy! airing schedule returns to normal today after its March Madness hiccups with the ninth and final quarterfinal of the Jeopardy! Invitational Tournament (the JIT). We’re also no more than 10 days from the return of regular play; we will be seeing around 160–165 games of regular play—about the number originally announced by the show last year—before we start seeing tournaments again in early 2025.

Today’s final quarterfinal sees a battle between robotics professor and “spiciest memelord” Lilly Chin, former Tournament of Champions winner Colby Burnett, and now-retired professor Sam Buttrey, being introduced as a “bon vivant & man about town”. Sam was relegated back into this competition after finishing 6th in Season 1 of Jeopardy! Masters. The prediction model thinks that this is going to be a generally evenly-matched game; I too believe that this will be a competitive and exciting episode!

An important note on this April 1: While I am not expecting much in the way of April Fool’s pranks today, there is always a chance that some Easter Eggs may be added in post-production. Thus, I would recommend that if you don’t want to be spoiled on such matters, you stay off social media until you’ve watched today’s episode.

Correct response: What is a wardrobe?

This quote comes from C.S. Lewis’s The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, the first published work in the Chronicles of Narnia series. Lucy Pevensie is the girl who “got in among the coats”, inadvertently discovering Narnia via the wardrobe.

I should point out that because the category is listed as “Novel Title Objects” today, “Wardrobe” is very likely going to be the only possible correct response to this clue, as any synonyms to “wardrobe” are not found in the title of this C.S. Lewis work.

Andy’s Thoughts:

  • Regardless of what you might have heard at home, Ken and the judges believed that Lilly said “neurodivergence”, not “neurodivergent”. Remember, they have the ability to isolate contestant audio to unequivocally confirm what was said. Further discussion on this point with regard to what they believe a contestant said will not be permitted here, per the Site Comment Policy. (Though, if someone confirmed in attendance at taping wishes to provide information regarding behind the scenes happenings, that would be permitted.)
  • The semifinals preview will be posted at 8:00 AM Eastern tomorrow.
  • Today’s box score will be linked to when posted by the show.

Final Jeopardy! wagering suggestions:

(Scores: Sam $24,400 Colby $14,800 Lilly $3,000)

Lilly: Bet whatever you like; you can’t win unless Sam overbets. (Actual bet: $0)

Colby: Bet at least $4,400 to have any chance of winning; if this was regular play, I’d suggest limiting to $8,799 to lock Lilly into third. However, because second and third place get the same prize money, you can safely go all in here. (Actual bet: $9,601)

Sam: Standard cover bet over Colby is $5,201. (Actual bet: $5,201)

Updated JIT odds:

Matt +470
Larissa +500
Victoria +530
Amy +710
Jennifer +760
Sam K. +830
Andrew +1000
David +1100
Sam B. +2100

Finals length odds:

2 games: +180
3 games: +110
4 games: +330

27 Comments on "Today’s Final Jeopardy – Monday, April 1, 2024"

  1. I found this straight forward I just hope that someone doesn’t mess up and give the whole title.

  2. “What is a wardrobe?” I read these books as a child.

    • Hi RedRose! I owned them as a child and much longer. I think until 2017. I read the first 2 or 3. I must not be able to remember too much of my childhood, as I blew this and came up with “closet.” 🙁

  3. Three of my all time favorite champions. I don’t know if it is likely, but it seems like as the show has gone on, the champions club has become more cohesive and they seem to somehow be supportive, nice and funny, even as they are remarkably competitive.
Anyway, if this isn’t a triple get, I don’t know what is. This is one of the easiest final jeopardy clues in a long time.

I wonder how many Americans, other than Narnia fans, actually realize that a wardrobe in this very British context is what most of us would probably refer to as a closet.

    • So the movie got it wrong? It’s a room of a house, not a piece of furniture (a “title object”)?

      • Looking through the OED, it looks like the “room of a house” meanings of “wardrobe” were extinct by the 20th century. Since, to Americans, a closet is pretty much exclusively a little room and not a piece of furniture, and the wardrobe of the book was a piece of furniture, I think it’s safe to say most of us wouldn’t refer to the titular object as a closet.

        • In my area with many old homes, I was told that the reason many houses do not have closets (and thus had the furniture piece called a wardrobe) is because houses were taxed by the number of rooms, and closets counted as rooms.

        • When I was a kid in Ohio in the 1950s, people called a wardrobe an armoire. Regional differences? A closet was always a room, never a cabinet.

    • A closet is not a wardrobe. As most Anericans know, a wardrobe is a separate piece of furniture.

      • Except for the department of a movie set or TV production company which is called ‘Wardrobe’, so the room, rooms, or trailer the clothing is housed in is probably referred to as ‘Wardrobe’.

  5. I am familiar with the Narnia stories, so this Final was easy for me.

This was the rare FJ that seemed obvious to me, and yet only one of the contestants knew it. It’s amazing how the bits of trivia stuck in our brains can vary so much!

    • Notably, the oldest contestant that most likely remembers a wardrobe. 😁
      CONGRATS SAM!!!

      • Not necessarily, as the books are still read and the movies [TV shows?] are still available to be streamed, it might have been more likely for the oldest person to have that book farther back in their memory than the younger ones might.

I am older than Sam and I am quite familiar with all past media versions of the Narnia books, but I did not think of them because the date meant nothing to me and unfortunately I immediately got off onto thinking a child would like rubbing their faces on fur coats and that a batch of them could be found at “coat checks”, was then distracted thinking about ‘Eloise at the Plaza’ and such (that I am NOT familiar with), so could not think of any book that would have “coat check” (or some other name for it that I am not familiar with) in the title.

    • For some unknown reason upon hearing the FJ clue I had a premonition that not only would Sam get it, but that only he would.

  7. Happy to see Sam move on. He is a fun contestant. I expected him to get this particular Final.

This book, along with the whole series, is on the bookshelf in my living room. I used to read these stories to my kids until they were old enough to read it to themselves. Given all that, today’s final was pretty much as easy as it could be for me. I’d guess that if one had never read any of the Chronicles, they might have a tougher time with this final.

  9. Michael+R | April 1, 2024 at 7:30 pm |

Yay for the bon vivant! Great match-up, three great champs…my only surprise was the triple stumper stat…thought for sure would be in sub-5s.

  10. Any idea what Sam called Ken, during the interviews? Listened a few times, can’t figure it out.

  11. I clearly do not remember enough of my childhood and certain books that I read. I read “The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe.” I owned all 7 books until about 2017, but only read the first 2 or 3. I guessed “closet” tonight. Embarrassing by far! 0 for my last 25 on FJ. I better be careful because they might ask my specific last night tomorrow and I might have forgotten it!

Retro congrats to Sam on his win! One of my favorite players. I very much enjoyed getting to see the other 2 contestants play for my first time. 🙂

Can’t wait to see the Semifinal matchups, as it will like be up on the official Jeopardy site in short order.

By the way, with it being April Fools Day, do you think Ken was playing a little April Fools Day joke about Victoria’s win being “yesterday” or that perhaps that was an unnoticed faux pas?

    • Since it is rote to SAY “yesterday” instead of “an hour or so ago” or “earlier today”, my guess is that it was said accidentally. I believe for an April’s Fool joke it would have been something wittier than that.

      • I agree with you Lisa and having been at 2 Jeopardy tapings before, I am kind of surprised that they didn’t have Ken correct that. No biggie though. Just made me wonder if was actually Monday. 😉

  12. *Might as my specific last name tomorrow” that is!
